Q-CUP Queensland Cup 2023

Thought more would come of that but WYnnum don't care- just go back and take the kick while your front rower rolls around in the in-goal.

Extra time at Wynnum.

Wynnum have to get a Willison run at the posts- a field goal after his run would be ideal.

If I was a field goal kicker, the last player I'd want to have the ball on the 4th is Saitaua. Fends off the entire team but gives it to the winger on the last!

Fortunately the charge down bounces Wynnums way and Rogers knocks it over with an ugly field goal.

That whole 32 missed and failed attempts was painful. They were both horrible at it.

Willison probably gets my Broncos of the week award. Some strong runs and quick play the balls and a try backing up the middle.

Queensland Rugby League can today confirm the implementation of a new statewide competitions structure for aspirational male and female players.

The 2024 season will see the removal of the male Under 21 competition, with the current Cyril Connell Challenge and Mal Meninga Cup competitions moving to Under 17 and Under 19 age groups.

The new structure will also align with female competition age groups following confirmation of the introduction of an Under 17 girls competition to support the existing Harvey Norman Under 19s.

Both female competitions have been structured to accommodate future expansion and competition growth, and will be underpinned by the Future Maroons Academy supporting the City/Country Under 17 and Ruby/Sapphires Under 19 programs.

The elevation of under-age male competitions aligns with the junior representative program in New South Wales, as well as the proposed Under 17 interstate game and the existing Under 19 clash.

The Under 19 male competition will be played over an extended period to compensate for the removal of Under 21s, with a proposed 10 round season and four week finals series.

Both male competitions will continue to accommodate school competitions as part of the existing pathway.

QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin said the revamp would allow clubs to sharpen their focus on talent development and talent specialisation.

“Our statewide clubs are best positioned to develop talent for the elite game – and we believe the best 20 and 21 year-old players in the state are capable of playing in the Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership,” Ikin said.

“Data also suggests that the majority of players in this age group already have been identified, meaning they hold NRL or NRL Development contracts, or are Hostplus Cup and BMD Premiership contracted players.”

Ikin said the changes would serve to strengthen community rugby league.

"This model provides statewide competition clubs a better opportunity to align with their community league affiliates,” Ikin said.

“It’s also important to remember that players who may take longer to develop still have a pathway to open age QRL statewide competitions via local senior grade competitions in their area.

“The changes to competition structures are further underpinned by the 13-15 year old development programs delivered around the state.

“There are currently Under 15 boys programs being delivered around Queensland, with rebel Development Series games scheduled for the upcoming school holidays.

“These programs will remain a critical part of the talent identification process for Under 17 boys and girls.”

What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts?

Probably right, you don't really need U21- you can go from Meninga to Cup. Some players still play Colts- Mozer, Te Kura played it last year. Lockyer even played colts.

I think it's good football and strong competition against men without playing against men- if that makes sense.

Players are ready so early now and playing Cup and NRL so young, so you don't need to go through every step anymore and from 18 to Cup/NRL isn't that massive a step anymore age wise.

I just worry if there is nothing after Meninga that player that isn't quite ready at 18 but might be ready at 20 will get lost.

It gives you somewhere to put players when they are tired or over it in August- Mozer and Te Kura ended last year in Colts. Now you will have them playing BRL.

No matter what system you have there is going to be a player next year you say Colts would be handy for him and then a player will go from Meninga to Cup and then see don't need Colts.

But I think at the end of seasons when you're trying to make Cup finals and you have a Mozer or a Te Kura that isn't up to it anymore you'll wish you just had that level down.

Better for them to play QCup .....as opposed to colts/ U21's?

This current Broncos/Storm situation on Thursday is exactly what I would be worried about in the future- in 12 months' time what would happen? Not only are all four Cup feeders now having to find players, but Falcons and Easts are still in the Colts too- Souths and Wynnum got knocked out last week.

No Colts where are you finding players that can step into a Cup final on Saturday?

Why don’t they just delay the q cup season by 4 weeks or so

I'm just trying to wrap my head around what this is going to look like.

If we take the Dolphins - your Brenton Bairas, Caleb Jacksons, Connor Williams will be fine, but what about the rest of them? My concern is that you risk losing that generation of talent because when a Brenton Baira is called up you may not have that Will Cahill to call on and then you're struggling for numbers in local footy because politics got in the way of the long term.

You just hope the money that's saved from abolishing the competition is invested into grassroots and you can make it appealing to young men to stick with the game.

Well today is interesting.

Souths, have to overcome no Sailor which is a major dent to their confidence and points.

No Bayliss is huge.

Massive test for Te Kura to see just how he handles a bit of pressure and no Bronco mates.

Wynnum same situation how does ET last week impact them this week.

I think Souths will win somehow.

Tomorrow, I think Capras at home are going to a prelim! Too much disruption for Falcons.

Really good coaching battle today- they've both got not ideal teams, playing finals for the first time and who has handled the week better and can have their team motivated and believe.

Wynnum 18-12.

Leota his first Cup try- unmarked off a Kelly pass. He's trying hard to get involved. That Wynnum try just before time was a heart breaker- the break in the middle and they never recovered.

Hunt has to calm them and improve the ruck- a try from dummy half and a try up the middle inside the first 40 minutes isn't good enough.
