NEWS Reece Walsh sells his soul to Warriors. No big deal.

I'd put a tenner on the fact that this kid will end up being either nothing, or bog standard and nothing more.
Set it up on Sportsbook.

Tough loss for sure, until he's played a couple seasons in first grade we won't know if we should have matched their offer or not. Unfortunately we don't have a crystal ball too know the answer so its hard to be critical for letting him walk.

I was at a function a couple of weeks ago with Shane Webcke as the guest speaker. It was in a rural area with a very strong Bronco's fanbase so the majority of questions where geared towards the broncos current situation.

He made very clear that him and the majority of other old boys who have now been welcomed back to the club are of a smilair opinon that a huge issue is the trend of paying guys on potential and not proven abiliy. That and giving these guys a debut without earning it. He also mentioned that Kevvie and the club have been told this numerous times over since he took over the club.

He made an example of guys like Darren lockyer were playing A grade for Roma cities in the bush as a 17 year old earning stuff all while these kids these days are sigining 300,000 dollar contracts having not faced a grown man.

If Brisbane let Dearden walk now after letting Walsh walk it will be very evident that they're taking the old school approach and making guys earn their contract and if none of them do then we hit the market and pay for guys that are proven and are the current big thing rather then trying to pick the next big thing.

Even if we keep these guys you will face it down the line. Tedesco is an prime example, you watch these guys go from rookie to more sure of themselves to being the core of the team and then a club like the Roosters comes in and takes them. I would rather let them go right away if they are not prepared to stick around long enough to win a GF.

The stupidest part about this for the Warriors is that because it's a three year deal and he's so young and not developed yet, even if they rush him into their NRL side next year he's unlikely to be regularly productive for them for at least the first season or two, and even if he does come good in year two and look to be a star, by the time November rolls around he's going to have every NRL club swarming, including a second Brisbane team in all likelihood, who can swoop in and pay unders to bring him back to Queensland and his family and friends. So the Warriors, who have spent the time getting him settled into first grade and paying good money for him to learn and find his feet, will likely have to watch him go off and play his best years somewhere else.

But his development in the Warriors culture will also suffer. The team is renowned for clocking off when the going gets really tough. They tried to fix it by bringing over guys like Kevin Campion and the likes, but it seems to be ingrained in the club culture - they can be world beaters and throw the ball around like the Harlem globetrotters when they are in a rich vein of form, but when the whips begin to crack at the pointy end of the season they inevitably drop their bundle. Some of that may be put down to the inordinate amount of air-miles they have to clock up over the season, but I feel a lot of it comes down to their club culture. Not a great place for a kid to learn how to play NRL.

Having said that, the present state of the Broncos is no better. We are sadly lacking experience and hard nosed veterans at the club to keep the young guns in check. I think Walsh has the potential to be a great FB, but I think he has been ill advised to take the cash on offer at present. If he (and his manager/advisors) were so sure of his talent they should have realised there was a lot more to be made in the future provided he was developed properly and had access to third party deals and media coverage. I sincerely doubt he gets that over in NZ.

The kid might be special, or he might not.
But paying $500k to a kid who hasn't laced up a boot for first grade is the definition of stupidity.
I'm annoyed the Warriors did it, but I'm delighted we didn't match it, and I truly can't understand anyone who thinks this is a stuff up.
I think it's a stuff up by the kid......Warriors is the place careers go to die, not develop.

Its a stuff up by him, but there has to be more than the money behind it.

All I can say is Walsh is going to be sorely disappointed when we go on our premiership run over the next three years and Isaako is winning Clive Churchills like they're going out of fashion...
Do they give out Clive Churchill’s in QCup?

money + a pretty much guaranteed spot in the NRL team can be a great motivator.

well he definitely got a Dally M already in his 1st year with the big boys.

let's wait and see how the 2nd reincarnation of Denan Kemp goes next year with the Warriors.

I reckon it's going to be obvious. We can do a Sportbet early payout offer or some lame marketing shit in a few months.
I'm worried you'll go broke at this rate.

Wasn't he reportedly offered starting spot at the Broncs too?

but not the money to go with it ...

besides should Isaako perform well this season, it would be tough to drop him. this may have concerned Walsh

Yes, fullback next year. Presumably preceded by game time this year. I was expecting to see him within the next month, tbh. Anyone who watched the trial knows he's up to it. I feel way worse about losing this kid than Fifita, Staggs or Dearden.
