NEWS Rival's $1.5 million raid on boom Bronco

While you don't want to get rid of all your experience to accommodate kids, you need to look at balance.

Which of these is going to be better in the next three to five years?

Bird, Boyd

v

Oates, Su'A, Haas, Fifita, Lodge, TPJ

Essentially this is what it may well boil down to, though we are likely to keep 2 (maybe 3 if lucky) of that second group.

Oates can go, hes great on the wing but I'd take Sua in the second row over him. Better defensively and is a harder player. Replace Oates with Shibasaki or Pearson. Glenn to the bench and Sua on the LSR, Gillett on the right and ushering Fifita in. McGuire and Lodge up front with TPJ13. Haas, Carrigan, Fifita, Glenn on the bench. Glenn and Gillett to retire/move on after 2020.

Our attack is going to really struggle next year if we still have the mess with our halfback and then also replace Oates with Pearson lol.

Pearson is very good in Q Cup, just hasn't stepped up to NRL level. Still young and dumb, once he finds his feet he will be pretty great.

The Issue we have is i dont see us as a side who will throw quite a few of these kids in to find their feet. I dont think anyone, fans or the people running the club would accept a couple of seasons of not being a big player in the NRL. I also dont think we have a core of good, solid leaders around to help them. We have very few players who i think are captain material.

Yep it is a massive issue...which makes me wonder whether they may dangle that carrot in front of TPJ.

Pearson is doing well again for the Phins, but he hasnt really stepped up the last few games for us. Agree about Shiba, i'd worry a little about him in defence at NRL level in defence right now, but bringing him on as a winger to develop could be a master stoke.

I'm not so sure tbh he is the kind of captain we are looking for quite honestly. He is certainly capable of coming up with big plays to lift the team, but i'm not sure just yet he has that calmness about him when the team needs to settle down a bit. I just dont think outside of Boyd ( yes i know it isnt a popular train of thought, but the players all look to him on and off the pitch ) we have anyone close to captain material. Possibly Macca, but thats about it.

McGuire might be alright, needs to be a bit less of a dickhead and grow up a bit. He leads by example every week but just rubs the wrong way. TPJ would be good in a few years.

Having known the Su’a Family, I don’t think he’s been brought up for it all to be about the coin. He wants a starting spot. Wants to cement his role and career in a team. If Broncs can’t offer him a fair amount of his worth and that starting spot I reckon we may lose him.

I’m amazed at how he has stood up in Gillo’s shoes to be honest. He’s been a machine and is all but 20 years old. But if he returns to the bench and is under-utilised like earlier this year, can’t blame him that he might not think that’s good for his development

I don’t see why we can’t offer Su’a a starting spot. Glenn has been on & off the bench for most of his career. A back row of Su’a, TPJ and Gillett would be viable.

Move Gillett to lock , but i also think it's time for glenn to move aside.

Agree a lot with this. Oates is amazing & will be amazing in the second row, but Sua has proved himself a talent in the position. Only difference for me is isaako keeps right wing, Kahu to the left wing with Pearson, shibisaki as back up. We may lose Oates and opacic.
I don't think it's as doomed as the papers insinuate, we will lose someone we want to keep but we won't lose more then that if we do it right (eg if we lose Sua, Oates will stay for the 2nd row chance or the above)...
Fifita and haas are signed beyond this year, TPJ has stated he wants to stay, lodge wants to pay us back by all accounts.
Sims, tagatese and Thaiday gone means that there's opportunity for these young guys to make a spot there's, should be enough to keep most of them....

I actually wouldn't be surprised if we lose Oates and Sua. A lot could depend on how Gillett comes back from his neck injury. I know it's not the same injury, but Tallis really struggled and was never the same player after his.
