Roberts contrary conduct

Yeah, he comes across as very troubled.

I'm floored by how judgemental this statement is. You have absolutely no idea about him one way or the other, it is incredibly likely that this is just the way he looks. Not everyone runs around with a smile on their face.

To look at someone's body language, especially when they are playing in a high pressure arena like an NRL game and judge that they are 'deeply troubled' is baffling.

All the above is true. Older supporters will remember Peter Jackson ...a player with a smile that would split a watermelon and an effervescent outward manner but what lay underneath was a deeply troubled man.

Eh, if you guys can pick that from seeing a bloke on tele for about 30 minutes of this year, you're in the wrong job.

JAMES Roberts has dealt with his charge for touching a referee and moved on - even if he can't remember the incident.
Roberts took an early guilty plea on the contrary conduct charge after he was caught lightly patting the ref on the chest.
And the new recruit showed he has moved past the incident when quizzed about it after training today.
"It's not my call and to be honest I can't remember it happening," he said.
"But the NRL has dealt with it in their way and that's all we can do."
Roberts took questions from worried media today about the fact he had not yet scored a try for the Broncos, even though the season is only two games old.
The Broncos scored two tries against the Warriors down the right-hand side last week as defenders over-corrected while marking the lightning-fast Roberts.
Tries to Darius Boyd and Matt Gillett were scored directly inside in the space created by Roberts.
But he said getting over the line was not his concern.
"It's been a bit quiet but I'm not worried about attack," he said.
"Here we pride ourselves on our defence, so as long as we keep that right edge strong I am happy.
"That's my main goal this year, to improve my defence.
"I scored some tries last year so I don't really need to prove I can score points.
"Holding that right side down (defensively) is my main priority for the team at the moment.
Roberts said he was noticing more attention from defenders,
"For sure - everyone does after you have had a good year," he said.
"But I don’t mind - I'd rather score no tries and win a game and the boys be happy, than score three tries and lose."

He sounds deeply troubled and disinterested.

I wasn't at the game so can only comment on what was on camera, you previously made no mention that your comments related to off camera things.

He doesn't look like he lacks effort on the field, he looks like he isn't getting any ball currently. He looks as 'disinterested' as Milf and Blair did at the start of last year. As I wasn't at this game I am going to have to trust the opinion of our coach and not some punter in the stands.

As to his joke I thought it was funny and I appreciate one of the most sanitised codes in the game featuring a bit of a character for a change. what I find funnier is the media and some fans' reaction to the comment, like the have to find fault and offensive in literally everything. These are the same people that I'm another breath will cry that the game lacks characters and that players/coaches only talk in cliches. I wonder why?

Definitely no where near the Blair and Milford levels of teething.

The off-camera stuff was honestly like he was about to sub-himself off in tears. The slowest player, limping back to the line every tackle. And the trainers just ignored him. The people around me all noticed and commented. It was bizaare.

So yeah, a week off might have done something good for the cause of that whether it's the injury he picked up, his fitness or his attitude?

His joke was line ball... whether you think it was funny or not is kinda irrelevant. When you're new to a club or any organisation and a playing group and trying to win respect, you don't put yourself out there to potentially shame the organisation and yourself with a bad taste joke. And beyond that he had just played like shit and trash talked the man of the match. No one wants to hear your mug lair shit when you did nothing all game.

How about avoiding a joke about drugs if you want to be a character, sport.

I think you've made your point.

I understand what subsbligh & symbolsoup are trying to say, it is possible to read body language from the stands, I remember a couple of the games I went to under the Griffin regime, Thaiday looked like he genuinely didn't want to even be out there, he would walk around in attack and seemingly avoid the ball for an entire set.

I went to a game towards the end of last year and Thaiday looked completely different, he was chirping to his team mates and looking to do as much as he could in attack & defence every set, he was a completely different player. Players can have seasons or stretches of seasons where they come across as lazy or disinterested, I've witnessed it first hand.

With that being said, I don't think "deeply troubled" is the correct way of putting it in Roberts case, that seems like a bit of a stretch, especially after 2 games. We need a bit more of a sample size.

As long as he keeps creating holes for my POD Gillett to stroll over for pies I don't care how disinterested/uninterested/interested he looks haha

Literally the only thing keeping me watching the NRL is the Broncos. What a fucking joke of an organisation! There's been what, 6 cases of players touching the referee already this year, and the only one to cop ANYTHING for it is the Broncos player.

They can never charge anyone for this again, short of physically assaulting the ref. Klemmer touched him, and not in a friendly way. On camera. So to be found not guilty they're either saying it never happened and we all imagined it, or its okay to do what he did.

Nice precedent fuckwits.

I look forward to Greenburg losing his shit.

What a joke. What grounds did he get off?

What the actual ****? How is it even possible? It's not a discretionary rule or one that requires a certain amount of force, recklessness, etc. It's black and white. Don't touch, regardless of perceived intent or circumstance.

The tin foil hat in me says Des got a tip off from Greenburg. The truth is probably far more disgusting - the NRL knows that this shit makes headlines, makes fans passionate. Divides them along club lines and makes the rivalry stronger. Rules, parity, fairness mean nothing when there's money to be made.

If Klemmer was not guilty of touching a referee, then they need to completely remove any charges of the same nature against all NRL players so far this season. What a farce that Roberts might miss a game in the future because of something that isn't even a bannable offence, as confirmed by the NRL review committee tonight.

Klemmer was always going to contest it for sure (the dogs always do). I'm afraid we were rather silly not to contest the charge. Y ou can't compare an uncontested charge vs contested.
