The Cowboys didn't have much say in the matter with Clifford, he signed with Newcastle first thing once again highlighting how silly the current transfer rules are.

Either you keep playing this half who has been terribly inconsistent and won't be there next year or you get a head start with a developing half.
I cant quite remember the timing, but I thought Payten was happy to let Clifford go??

I thought Payten had already signed up for cows and then it had been rumoured that Clifford was allowed to leave/ wouldnt be offered a contract, and then he signed at knights because he was told he wasnt wanted??

Then there was the yes, no, yes that Clifford was allowed to leave early, but then Payten said he had to stay during the off season... before eventually letting him go once Dearden was released

They wanted Tim Deardon ahead of Clifford, and they've signed Townsend on huge money.

So the Cows not wanting someone is probably the ultimate validation of a good signing.
Along with Kikau, Horsburgh, Ponga, B.Smith, Hamlin Uele & Holmes. The have let a few go that they probably regret. Never talked to Holmes even though he was the standout player in his age group.

It’s funny when you look at the names that the cows have let go, and then you look at how little articles have been written about their inability to keep young talent.
Imagine if it were the Broncos who had let Ponga, Kikau & B.Smith walk?
Badel & co would still be writing..

They still claim that we missed out on Ponga even though he was never contracted anyway

It does lead to the question of, given he seems to be more than pulling his own weight, why don't the Cows want to keep him?
They're playing JT in the second row, he was a beast at 13, so they move him, it hasn't worked and they are persisting with it. Says it all really. Would be like us moving Payne.

Payten didn't put up much of a fight, but it was Clifford who wanted out of the club.

It was similar to the Dearden situation with Clifford forcing the issue and the Cows letting him walk since Payten had only just arrived.

I think the rumours that I was thinking about are associated with the below... the timing is a bit odd, but looks like Payten signed with Cows in September and then rumours started of Clifford leaving early November (1st pick below), before officially signing elsewhere in late November (2nd pick).

There's some further hints that he was told he could leave in 2021... then cows backflipped and told him he had to stay for 2021, but they didn't intend to extend his contract... so I guess that was the rumour that I recall i.e. after Payten joins cows were happy for him to leave in 2021, he found a contract with knights, then they told him he couldn't leave in 2021, then they eventually release him after signing and getting a release for Dearden.

I found the whole thing a bit odd as Clifford was regarded a long term half for the cowboys, then all of a sudden they're happy for him to leave ... that to me suggested it was Payten who was happy to let him go... only for him to then backflip and say you can go, but not until after 2021... just seemed a dick move for a player that he didn't really ever want.

Yeah I can understand why you'd draw that conclusion and thanks for finding a source.

It's been an ongoing situation that dates back to 2019. Clifford was meant to be the heir apparent to JT, but Green felt Martin/Morgan was the better combination and went with it. When that failed to yield results, Green moved Martin to fullback since the Barba and Kahu signings hadn't panned out. However, the Cowboys still lost and Green threw Clifford under the bus. From that point on it became clear that Green was struggling to work with Clifford and Clifford wasn't keen to stick around long term.

Clifford was actually off contract at the start of the 2019/20 season but signed a one year extension just to monitor the situation. Despite Green being given the boot his form was still erratic and their future was still looking bleak.

With that in mind, Payten didn't fight to keep him at the club and he jumped at Newcastle who have former Cowboys staffers involved in recruitment. I don't think the sequence of events is right, Clifford knew there was interest from Newcastle and the Cowboys just gave him their blessing.

Initially it was discussed as an immediate release, but as Payten became more familiar with the squad and the wellbeing of Morgan he realised he needed to keep him if only as an option. To me that suggests that Payten didn't especially want him to leave, but if he didn't want to be here he wasn't going to create another uphill battle for himself.

To say they preferred Dearden over Clifford isn't really accurate. Clifford was gone and they had to find a long term replacement. Dearden just happened to be the most available so they went with him.

When it comes to halves, 9 out of 10 times you usually think of the best of them as a combination. Daley and Stuart, Walters and Langer, Kenny and Sterling. Then the newer guys you have Walker/Reynolds and Cleary/Luai.

Pearce and Foran for example played together at junior level from memory, but never played at NRL level together (that I'm aware of) Is the combination itself something that gets overlooked for something else these days?

Moses and Brooks were highly rated as a combination when they started out at Wests. And didnt Deardon and Clifford play junior rep football together as well?

You forgot Lockyer/Perry…
To an extent. Perry for me was more of a system player in the right place at the right time. Similar to whoever played 6 for Melbourne in their grand final wins before Munster came along.

That's not a knock on Perry though. Even Lockyer said somewhere that he was able to play how he did, because Perry did his job.

Perry only played like 40 something games for the Broncos in his career. 5 for Wests Magpies early on, and then like 200 ish for Redcliffe from memory before we signed him. He also achieved more than a lot of current NRL halves have with way more NRL experience.

Kind of like an earlier and older version of Tyson Gamble.

Looks like Levi would prefer to get an extension then go to England, not sure if cap is possible with the nepotistic signing but we gotta find a way.

Totally agree, he would be base wage and offers an excellent point of difference to Turpin.

Levi should be kept around for next year and the best performing hooker kept for 2023 in a perfect world to either partner grant or smith

I think Turpin for 50-55 minutes a game with Levi off the bench would be the best way to go, Levi is the better player around the ruck when attacking the line but as we seen last week he's probably not an 80 minute player.

1. Niu/Cobbo
6. Gamble
7. Reynolds
9. Levi

14. Turpin

We really should be going with this next season if Levi decides to stay on. Turpin can just be a tackle bot coming off the bench to give Levi a breather. In a perfect world Levi is the 14 and we grab Hodgson for starting hooker, but I think if we were going to sign him we would have done it already.

one big question i have with Levi is why the 15 other clubs aren't interested in him ... it's not like there a tons of quality hookers running around the league
