Round 1 Lineup

Surely Carrigan's days at Lock are over, he is more suited to Prop, especially when we have Ball playing options there now.

Don't pay any attention to that team, it isn't anything like preseason interviews and training reports have mentioned it will be. Based on said info, this is far more likely to be the team:

1. Isaako
2. Farnworth
3. Copley
4. Niu
5. Coates
6. Milford
7. Dearden
8. Haas (reduced minutes)
9. Turpin
10. Carrigan
11. Oates
12. Riki
13. Asiata

14. Paix
15. Flegler
16. Lodge
17. TPJ

Even that is still including some speculation on my part.

Glenn isnt dropped and Macca will be in the team over Paix, potentially starting. What that means for Oates and Riki I’m not yet sure.

Farnworth has said he’s playing centre.

edit:
1. Isaako
2. Oates (Gut feeling)
3. Farnworth
4. Niu
5. Coates
6. Milford
7. Dearden
8. Haas (reduced minutes)
9. Macca
10. Carrigan
11. Glenn

17. Riki

I don't think kevie rates Oates as a winger .

I don't think kevie rates Oates as a winger .
I hope not but there’s 2 big questions in the team list as far as I’m concerned:

who joins Coates on the wing,
and who misses out in the forwards.

Oates to the wing answers both those questions.

Something I found interesting is that of all our outside backs, only Copley has a left-handed carry, although Herbie is pretty good at switching it to the left when he needs to.

So with what we know so far, our left wing will most likely be between Arthars, Mead, Copley and Kennar.

I feel we are pretty over middled(if that's even a word) with forwards, especially when we got two Starting level Props with Carrigan and Lodge and one has to be bench, maybe Fleggs gets some 2nd row time, all of them are too good to be dropped which makes Hooker Rotation an issue, honestly Maccas case gets Stronger and should give turps a kick up the backside to be a proper 80 min hooker.

Honestly wouldn't be against changing the rules to have 18 players rather then 17 as injuries in the current game are only getting worse(just keep the interchange limit the same).

It's certainly going to be interesting to see who fits into the forward pack and rotation.

We've got Haas, Lodge, TPJ, Carrigan, Asiata, Flegler, Bullemor, Glenn, Riki, Oates, Macca, Turpin and Paix, which means 3 of them will have to miss out.

It looks like Macca and Turpin will get the nod ahead of Paix, but sorting out the second row and middle is another matter. You'd have to think that Haas, Lodge, TPJ, Carrigan and Asiata are all certainties, which only leaves 3 spots between Flegler, Bullemor, Glenn, Riki and Oates. Can't see how Teo, Kennedy or Palasia get a run unless we're down troops.

That can be taken two ways though. I can’t see him as a middle (prop/lock), yet second row is an edge (not winger). Very strange wording to me.
I think the middle was just a reference that Oates would be taking hit ups in the middle... "playing on the edge therefore he will end up in the middle at some point"

Arguably his best attribute as a winger was his hit ups... so he's probably just referencing that more than anything.

I feel like Kevvie keeps his cards pretty close to his chest and just plays along with the media to some extent. Just tells them cliches and a whole lot of nothing, but the media grab it and run away with it.

I think teo will surprise this year. Glenn is a certainty I reckon. He's getting a bad wrap but he was injured all of last year... Sounds like riki and flegler may be Walter's favourites and rightly so if they find form, they have aggression which we need.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. The playing on the edge would usually be assumed to mean 2nd row. The fact he went on to mention Oates would come in and spend some time playing up the middle due to his large size and making hit ups is intriguing. I think we can safely assume Oates definitely won’t be playing prop.So you could take Kev’s comments about Oates sometimes playing in the middle to mean he will sometimes play a second rowers role, and that the ‘edge’ he was referring too was the actual edge of the field, not the edge of the ruck - ie at wing.

On top of this, Kev and Herbie have confirmed Herbie will be playing centre. Copley hasn’t played wing in years, Isaako has been earmarked for first shot at fullback, Niu has been training in the centres. The only real option left for that vacant wing spot is Mead. It’s possible but Kev has also implied Mead is just around the club to guide the youngsters.

Finally, if you name our best forward rotation and have Macca and Turpin in the team (Kev has said this will be the case, unless of course Macca leaves before round 1), one of Glenn, Oates, or Riki miss out.

I’ve said this before but the only 4 real question marks regarding our round 1 team (barring further injuries) are as follows:

1. Who is Captain?
2. Which forward misses out (likely candidates: Glenn, Oates, Riki)?
2. Who plays left wing?
4. Who fills in for Staggs?

1. Will most likely be Glenn. This means question 2 is narrowed down to either Riki or Oates

2. Oates for all his flaws is an origin player at his best, one of the most experienced players in the team, and can be a key figure if motivated - however he has been a winger most his professional career and is a risk as a second rower. Riki has huge potential, power and class but is green.

3. Farnworth is confirmed at centre, and Isaako likely fullback. This leaves Copley (centre), Kenner (centre), Mead (Kev has mentioned he was brought for depth and mentoring), and Oates. I think the most likely of the options is Mead or Oates. I personally never wanted to see Oates on the wing again but it solves the problem in question #2, and leaves our most experience back in his most familiar position. I think Oates will be “on an edge” as Kev.

4. without being privy to training line ups, I think Niu has been training there and Copley would do a serviceable job.

Round 1 based on the pinboard and strings I’ve fashioned together in my lounge room:

1. Isaako
2. Oates
3. Farnworth
4. Niu
5. Coates
6. Milford
7. Dearden
8. Lodge
9. Macca
10. Haas
11. Glenn (C)
12. TPJ
13. Asiata

14. Turpin
15. Riki
16. Carrigan
17. Flegler

18. Pepe Silvia

Haas and Carrigan will play 50-60 minutes each at prop, with Lodge, Flegler, and TPJ providing rotation. Riki will cover TPJ when he goes to prop / lock. Glenn will play 80. Turpin to provide impact off the bench.

I’ll dig this list up for round 1. Pending unforeseen injuries, suspensions, or transfers I am very confident this will be the round 1 team.

Looks pretty good , macca might be gone and Oates might be the only ???

Croft would be favourite to take 6 if Milf isn't fit, but we could go with Asiata. He did play a bit there for the Cows, and we got plenty of Lock/Middle options if need be.

Better to let him get settled in permanently at lock I reckon, will be better for our structure moving forward. Croft will do alright for one game

I know we have all talked about Asiata at 13 but what if it was:

8. Lodge
9. Turpin (for us to release Macca I think we need more depth here)
10. Haas
11. Glen
12. Pangai/Riki
13. Carrigan/Pangai

14. Fleg
15. Riki/Carrigan
16. Asiata
17. Paix/Macca

ok so hear me out, If pangai started first 20odd on an edge, then shifted to 13 allowing Riki to come on and play out the rest on the edge, Asiata is said to have come because he wanted a start but the cows hwere just as bad last year and couldn't crack the side. Carrigan plays less min.

It’s all possible. Interesting to see what Kev comes up with. My biggest hope, regardless of what side is chosen, it’s because it’s the side Kev wants and not the side injuries force.
