POST GAME Round 10 - Sea Eagles vs Broncos

I also agree 100% with Barrett about the confusing grey area around Turbo Toms injury. It is dangerous to tackle someone in the air, it should not matter how the ball got there.
.

K so if a pass goes over a players head and they have to leave the ground to catch it . They can`t be tackled ?
Winger diving for the corner can`t be tackled ?

Don`t go there ...

I have seen a few complaining about this one as well. They showed a replay like 5 times and I couldn't see anything resembling a strip, in fact from memory there are no hands even on the ball. I don't know where they get that from. Taufua doesn't even complain at all which tells me he knows he lost it cold. Some people just make shit up to keep their hatred for Broncos going.
Brad Fittler has had a whinge about it on Freddies Monday wrap

He had his hand on the ball but was wrapping it up so he didn't flick an offload. It was poor ball security. Too many times referees penalise that. Tafua questioned it but he wasn't blowing up deluxe at the time. He has terrible hands in the play the ball. Sometimes I think he deliberately lets go of the ball to milk a penalty

As somebody already said, his hand was on the ball but then it came away and then the ball was dropped cold. Play on.

Thats a quality troll job to be fair
Manly fans are just whingers. Went to their forum and they're saying crap about how the ball was 'stripped', Mead's fault for Tom getting hurt (to be fair Tom landed badly himself) and how the last (accepted) try was forward - no mentioned about the one that 'magically drifted' 5+ metres.

Gonna joined up just to troll them when I get home (can't sign up on bloody Safari)

FFS that is retarded AND, IF that happened then that player is an ATTACKING player and under the rule is allowed to be tackled off the ground as long as he is not placed in a dangerous position as per every other tackle in the game. It's just not that hard.

I'll read the rules when you read the posts... It was a comment in relation to Barrett's call to ban ALL hits on a player in the air in order to 'protect them' regardless of whether the ball has bounced.

Then don't quote my post mate, how the **** am I supposed to know what you mean when you quote me but mean to comment on Barrett FFS.

Why should it be different between attacking and defending players?

Was Turbo the attacking or defending player as soon as he took possession of the bounced ball?

That's the rule currently I don't want the rule changed I just think it was a fair question to be asked. If Boyd was injured in that situation I think a few opinions would be different.

As for the second part, nice troll P.

If he had gone after the ball in the air, he would be defending - once it bounces, he is obligated to attack it.

Or some shit.

(Remember Boyd taking out Hayne in Origin 2013 game three's final moments?).

It wasn't a troll, given we're talking about player safety. I meant that whether you're the attacker or the defender shouldn't matter when player safety is the main concern.

The current rule is quite clear in that it protects defenders whom often will be vulnerable jumping from a stationary position in the path of rampaging attackers. Turbo's situation is very rare, but was treated in the same way as a situation much more frequent in our game, which is when a half is in the air after performing a kick, especially a bomb.

In that (and Turbo's) case, the protection isn't whether a tackle can be made, but how it's performed... you can't take the players legs from under him, or shoulder charge him.
A "normal" tackle in such a circumstance could result in the same unfortunate outcome when the player lands, and in a half's case, he isn't even in possession of the ball anymore!

Should tackles on halves in the air be banned altogether as well?

Sometimes it feels like, because the broncos were tipped to be out of the 8 and now sit 3rd commentators and reporters are finding new and inventive ways to "blame" something other than their poor judgement. They complain about a freak incident as a reason to change the rules or dodgey calls, forgetting 4 metre forward passes that go against the broncos, not to mention a few major injuries to key players (the chief play maker and leading try scorer no less). Despite those injuries and bad calls the broncos have strung 5 wins in a row and against some of the best the NRL has to offer. Maybe that might be mentioned some time as if it keeps going, they'll end up playing at the of September.

I think it's a stupid rule, completely out of touch with the realities of the game. All it does is give idiots like Bent Trent a chance to whinge.

For mine, once a player is in complete possession of the ball, they are fair game, on or off the ground.

If during an attacking move, a player has to jump as high as he can to catch a wayward pass, he is fair game to be tackled once he catches the ball. It's legit to tackle him in possession. He is as vulnerable in this scenario as someone catching a kick.

Frankly, I can't see the difference ... or wait ... should the NRL now introduce bomb height limits or maybe ban the bomb (lol).

Don't lol. Another 20-30 yrs from now it will be touch football, or close enough. (Please someone shoot me before this happens)
