POST GAME Round 10 - Sea Eagles vs Broncos

Disagree 100%

A dive like that, regardless of where the contact took place, should not be rewarded, end of!

As to Turbo, that is very unfortunate and rare, but where do we draw the line? Next we're gonna have players unnecessarily jumping to catch passes and draw a penalty...

Blatant theatrics need to be punished properly before we change rules which will draw more "artistic diving".

I don't disagree at all but as Bennett and Boyd said they are not blaming DCE but the officials need to deal with it

Also it would not matter if an attacking player jumped and was tackled in the air as long as they were not placed in a dangerous position.

The problem I have with the decision is that Cherry-Evans never attempted to make a play at Boyd. He deliberately read the situation poorly to get taken out by the block runner and draw the penalty. It wasn't like Thaiday had plenty of room to change his line, he was committed to it and would have hit DCE's inside shoulder had Cherry-Evans made a genuine attempt, but he was never going to.

I feel bad for the officials in this situation. The obstruction rule must be driving them insane and they've made so many changes now it's difficult for everybody to be on the same page. However in this instance I feel they got it wrong and if it was to cost a team a game we'd never hear the end of it.

A few thoughts on the game albeit very late
I couldn't face watching the first half again so I just watched the 2nd half
  • We spread the ball a lot in the 2nd half down our end and it worked well. It stretched Manly and we gained good metres
  • Moga if he could fix up his hands and passing skills, he would be a force. He got outside his man numerous times against Manly
  • Milford looked good, He took on the line a bit and ended up with more than 100 runnings metres and had 4 offloads for the night. Has had 22 Offloads all season approx. Maybe that's why we bulked him up
  • Mccullough's long kicking game needs to be worked on this week, a few times he kicked the ball early in the count and mis-kicked it. However I loved his bombs and we got 2 tries of the back of them. His bombs come down on a wicked angle
  • There was a period around the 50 minute mark where Milford put up a bomb and our chase was horrible and Thaiday tried a arm grab/slap which set off heaps more for the next few minutes. That slack chase gave Manly back the momentum and they got a few drop-outs and wrestled back momentum
  • Gillett's missed tackles are slowly becoming a concern and his work around the ruck after tackles is so bad, Let's the acting scum half get 10 metres easy. Loved his kick though
  • Manly looked much more dangerous when they did 2nd phase play. They have great ability to create offloads
  • Moga and Oates kept Walker and Uate quiet and whenever Walute got a half chance they shut them down very well.
  • Kahu's step is actually quite brilliant and he stepped passed Manly defenders a few times
  • Play Blair at lock, His offload is awesome and is more of a ball playing lock than Mcguire.
  • The T.Turbo incident was definitely the right call if you are playing by the book. It is a stupid rule. However thank Meady for that try. He forced the error with a brilliant chase. Very good effort
  • Kahu's kicking OMFG. Fixed the power problems and is kicking them right over the black dot.
  • Nikorima try. LOL at his his eyebrows, he raises them to his hairline when he made that break. Burnt Kelly for speed too.
  • Possession is a major factor atm in the NRL. All the Momentum we had in the 2nd half was due to the fact we had 80% of possession
  • Blake Green is far too predictable
  • We shut down Manly's attack very effectively in the 2nd half
  • I feel sorry for Warren Smith, whenever I hear his voice I think of his commentating in Fletch and Hindy
  • Big Pete explains the DCE dive perfectly. Diving Cherry Evans. Hugely talented athlete great at diving and backflipping
  • If you are wanting to watch some good Broncos footy watch that 2nd half. Great Half

I thought they were friends? People posted photos of them together back when we were hoping we'd sign DCE.

They may well be and maybe it was a bit of banter between mates, what was said wasn't picked up on the microphone, but Josh definitely had a few words to DCE, that DCE didn't react to.

Delusional. Where did he say this btw?

He didn't. It's a massive exaggeration. He however did say they didn't deserve to lose and probably were the better team for a big chunk of the match. That doesn't get you two points though.

That is the question isn't it. If player safety is the dominant factor then you should not be able to tackle someone in the air. Last night is the perfect example why. It has nothing to do with someone having the balls to catch it on the full.

It's a bit like being able to shoulder charge in attack but getting suspended for doing it in defence. I agree you can't protect every situation but it doesn't make sense that you can tackle someone in the air if the ball bounces.

Sweet so we will just hire high jumpers at the Broncs, rather than prop forwards and have our forwards jump at the defensive line as a tactic and we will never be tackled ever again...

Yes he did. It's in the NRL press conference for crying out loud. He said verbatim that the Turbo Tom injury cost them the game...

No he said the incident that led to the try in which turbo got hurt cost them the game which it probably did. They were up 14-6 before that try. In his warped mind he believes that that incident should have been given a penalty and therefore the try not awarded. He said it should be discretional

Not sure if english is your first language, however this is his direct quote so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you can at least read it, if not hear it...

'Not only did it cost us the game, it cost us one of our best players.' Trent Barrett, round 10 NRL press conference 2017.

He was talking about the try in which he got hurt. Giving a smart ass comment when you yourself are not understanding the context of what he was trying to say. That took it to 14-12. Like I said he reckons it should have been a discretional penalty. Up 8 with 17mins to go they were favourites. He was saying if that was illegal they wouldnt have lost. Which is a reasonable statement being up 8 with 17 to go. Not that hard to work out. But its irrelevant as it is currently legal. He was trying to protect his player and his club which nearly every coach does.

I really don't think it could be any clearer....

The only person not understanding it is you.

He said they lost because his star player got hurt in a play where a try was scored to make it a 2 point game which he thought should have been a discretional penalty to keep it at a 8 point game with 17 to go therefore. At no point did he say that turbo being injured cost them the game. He was referring to the try. I have tried to explain it simply and be nice but some people have shit for brains. Deadset...

This started with you contradicting an earlier poster who stated Barrett said that. That was his exact quote. Context is meaningless when I am simply redressing YOUR incorrect statement that Barrett never said this.

He did. It is black and white and you pretending he didn't deserved a smart ass reply, which is why you got one. The only 'shit for brains' in here is you when there is recorded video in an official NRL press conference no less, of Barrett saying the exact bloody thing, YOU say he didn't... I already gave you the exact quote and yet you still deny it...

For the record, the idea that no one can be hit if their feet are off the ground in order to 'protect the player' is ludicrous. Why aren't players in attack contesting bombs 'protected'? Why are blockers allowed? Why are players in defence so worthy of protection. Yet players in attack in the air get none? For one very simple reason.

Because you change that rule and the entire game will have to change. Jumping for the ball will have to be banned entirely.

Fair dinkum, AP's got nothing on you... the effort you put into polishing the Broncos opponent's turds is amazing.

Ha ha, yes he did. Just stop.

I thought they got it right, BP, Thaiday was not running at the inside shoulder and gave DCE the chance to hold and turn slightly out. He was beaten no doubt but also smart enough to realise the situation and play the rule.

I also agree 100% with Barrett about the confusing grey area around Turbo Toms injury. It is dangerous to tackle someone in the air, it should not matter how the ball got there.
Don't get me wrong though if that's the rule then they called it right but it probably needs to be changed.
As far as Barrett claiming it cost them the match I reckon that's 95% BS. We had them at that stage.
The attacking team doesn't get that now for balls in the air. Are we going to amend it when an attacking player gets hurt. Some things are inherently dangerous in rugby league, but trying to legislate sends you down a slippery slope. Letting the ball bounce for a bomb has always been a big no-no. It can go anywhere and in this case it went strait up. It was unlucky for travoyavich but so is the player that gets caught awkwardly in a 3 man tackle (note no-one is rushing to change the rules for poor old James roberts.)
