This is why Bill Harrigan is the best Ref of all time:

He just understood the game

Essentially a fight happened off the NSW **** bailey and he said to both Bailey and Webcke: ''you got it out of your system, that's good lets play a game a footy'' penalty to us.

IMO Bill Harrigan is a ****.
He is solely responsible for the interpretation era from when he was the refs boss..
He wanted, IMO, to leave a legacy and that was that all refs saw the rules exactly the same way as he did.
He was a good ref but he wasn't the only view on the RULES OF THE GAME.
The dominant not dominant POV has changed the game for the worse and has caused untold confusion in the ruck rules and opened the door ro Bellamy to abuse the rules with the the wrestle bullshit.
We find ourselves here In 2023 because the rules are no longer being reffed but interpretations are being reffed.
The original rules are still there, if they were reffed as intended the game would be a lot simpler.
Sure, we would get individual refs seeing things in a game differently but so what? that was always the way and you get to know how different refs worked.

After reading the reviews here then watching the game I was expecting a shitty game but thought the game was quite good.
We can concentrate on rhe ref calls all we want but we created enough chances to blow them off the park.
Ezra is a champ but does NOT see space like an elite 6.
He cycles through our plays with no instinct on where the space has been created.
Our centres don't know when to pass. Run first pass second
Its costing points too often.
Flegler was enormous.
Riki will need a break along with Capewell at some point, they've pretty much played every minute this year.
We are a good side with a shot depending on injury.
Right now I'd put us 4th to 6th as a premiership chance depending on our injuries and other teams injuries.

I agree with you, Olam should have had a try, and Reece def shoulder charged him.

It was poor reffing across the board, just the Broncos copped the brunt of it.

Now that i am of sound mind and not being driven mad by emotional rage at what i witnessed last night, i can honestly say the tipping point for me was two things.

1 - The Carrigan hip drop. I flipped my shit at that call and turned the TV off and went to bed.
I hate hate hate what the NRL is doing to our game, and its stupid shit like these hip drop penalties that are a big part of it.

2 - This one bothered me the most, and that was when Hughes shouldered Flegler in the back like the weak gutted dog that he is, and got nothing for it. Zilch, Zero, Nothing.

I fucking hate the Storm, and i hate every one of their players and think that Bellamy and the tactics they have introduced to the game over the past decade have been more damaging to the sport than any other factor.

Followed closely by Vlandys.
Well rounded reply. Can't disagree with any of it.

I think in general the last few years refereeing has gone down hill. This can attributed to the Sutton brothers ruining them with nepotism and bias. That's why Gavin Badger left, who for ke was on of the best. Atkins isn't bad unless he is reffing the riff.

It has a 2006 feel about it in some ways. Let’s hope we have another happy ending…

The strip call was right. Warbrick still has possession of it, Walsh needed to completely separate the ball from Warbrick's hands, not simply make it loose.
That's simply not true BP. Once it's loose it's free for anyone to take it, if it's loose and goes forward and Walsh touches it, it's a knock on and our ball. If it's loose and goes backwards, Walsh or Ezra are free to grab it and run. It was not a 2 on 1 strip at all.

Only if there's separation, Warbrick still has possession of the ball when Mam comes into the tackle and Walsh is finally able to dispossess him as the ball.

You can hit a player and loosen their grip on the ball, but that doesn't entitle you to then strip it.

There doesn't need to be separation for it to be a knock on or a loose carry, therefore he dropped it into Walsh and it's our ball.

The key is player in possession, at no point has Warbrick lost possession until Mam gets involved. Walsh is making a play and loosens his grip of the footy, but Warbrick still maintains a grip on it.

That’s not true, he’s lost grip into another player. He’s lost it. There’s no possession once it’s hit a defensive player

No he still has a grip on it, this is like Slater on Berrigan in the 2006 GF. Berrigan barely had a hold of the ball, but Slater in that situation can't give it that last effort. Same here and once Ezra contacts Warbrick, Walsh can't play at the ball.

Walsh doesn't complete the strip until Mam becomes involved, therefore it's a penalty.

But if Walsh doesn’t take it, it’s a knock on. That’s stupid and not the rule.

Against Reece Walsh because he's used a stripping motion and is dragging the ball towards the opponent's goal line.

I believe Warbrick had already lost control by the time Mam has become involved (when he touches him to affect the tackle) - at the least contact was simultaneous with the ball dislodging but I think the ball was free from his grip at that point

I have no problem with that being no try, it is one of the few things they so any consistency with.

I can see what you're saying. The ball rotates before Mam contacts Warbrick, but both players are jostling for it. Walsh only secures the ball when he drags it into his crotch, by that point Mam is involved.

EDIT: I do apologise for hijacking the thread and making it all about the referees. Happy to let others have their say and just move on next week.
