PRE-GAME [Round 12, 2023] Broncos vs Panthers

Walsh is not Reynolds. Cobbo had a pretty solid game at FB in that first round match. If we win it'll be because Mam and Madden steps up but in order to do that our forwards NEED to be dominate. If the Panthers start rolling down the field then Cleary and Yeo will crucify us. Yeo's runs will be targeting our halves.
I think we can win if the halves play a solid if not unspectacular game, leave the big attack plays to Walsh who even with Reynolds on the field is our biggest try creator, he doesn't lead all the attack stats for a fullback in the entire comp for no reason, only Latrell comes close and he has half the game involvement.

I was there last year when he put the Broncos to the sword and led the Tigers to a big victory over a top 4 side. The kid has talent.
Everyone has talent mate. You don't get to the professional level without having it. Doesn't mean he'll be useful to us.

Also, he played well against us when we fell apart. I hope he does well and makes me eat my words, but 1 game for the Tigers against a broncos side in freefall doesn't fill me with confidence. Nor did his first game for us. Not only was he traffic cone in d, but in attack he just shuffled the ball off to someone else. Didn't (seemingly) want to take on any responsibility. I get he probably wanted it safe, but playing it safe makes him look rubbish in attack and in D.

If we are to have any chance of competing here, we need our natural ball players to have the pill as much as possible.

Enter Corey Paix.

Criminally, actually probably stupidly, underused against Melbourne, with no Arey we need someone on the field to steer this team either with the ball or boot.

Paix can be a part of that solution with the ball.

Take these moments from Magic round against Manly.

Mam is organsing the left edge but Paix steers Tapou right instead..

By drawing one of the markers towards Marty, Turbo steers himself infield. Now there's a yawning gap on the right hand side of Manlys defence.

Paix gestures right but knows Mam has the numbers he needs. He steps right but turns to pass left and Mam brings Capewell onto the ball who throws a beauty of a pass to his winger.

It shows me that Paix is scheming and showing good sleight of hand around the ruck to bend & shape the defence for the benefit of the other primary ball handlers. Ive had reservations about starting Flegler and Walters from the kick off.

But for me, if Paix doesnt get at least 60 minutes this game then im looking squarly at the coaching box for not leverging the strengths of our playing roster.

But thats me....you might think differently....

60 mins for Paix is ambitious, against a Panthers side who tend to dominate the ball even in games they lose I doubt he would last close to that.

With Reyno gone we need a very high completion rate to stay in it, we give them cheap ball and we will pay the price.

You’re also dismissing him after 1 game. Give the kid a chance.

Maybe...but needs must....

The issue with Madden is that it's not just one game. If he was killing it like Arrow and Carrigan were in the lower grades it'd be easier to encourage fans to be patient but from all reports he's gone off the boil in Queensland Cup as well.

He needs to put it to the side and take ownership of the team. I don't necessarily blame him for his defensive efforts against Souths, when you allow your halfback to make 30 tackles something has gone wrong. However it was what he did with the ball and the lack of initiative that was the biggest concern.

Not only does he have to nail his last play options, but he has to make sure he uses the players around him.

The big thing for Brisbane will be their discipline. Too often they've given away blatant penalties or found themselves a player short because a player took a soft option. Herbie Farnworth in particular has now made two costly errors, with the Melbourne Storm one being by far the more frustrating because it was so unnecessary.

As long as we have a high completion rate and the score doesn't blow out, I'll be happy tbh. We'll reap the rewards of high percentage football down the track.
A few repeat sets would be nice too. But we usually get stitched up by a short drop out.

Paix has been very very ordinary the last 4 or 5 games. Hope he found some form in Qcup last week.

Defence won it for us last time and will again. We need to get up in their face the whole 80 minutes and choke them and the referees out of it.
Won't be easy but we can do this.

I'm wondering how much the field will dictate the game tonight. We had a lot of rain the other night so that Northern end will be boggy.

The key to this game is stopping the Riff from offloading. It's when their backs do the first three hitups and manage an offload to their forwards that they seem to get the biggest roll on. Shutdown Edward's runs and support play and you take a lot of oxygen away from their forwards as they're made to cover more ground..

Without Reyno I think we are in for a rough ride tonight boys, but oh man............. if we do somehow manage a win it's going to one to be very proud of.
