Round 13 - Canberra vs. Broncos - Post Match Discussion

Should not have went to that game. Freezing conditions and just come with disappointment. The kicking was pathetic really. No height, weight or distance and straight to the back 3. Wallace's grubber behind the line was woeful and they gained a solid 20 metre run off it. The way Norman diffused all those kicks impressed me, as did Hoffman a few times.

Glenn looked disinterested and seemed to have thrown the towel in during the last quarter. Thaiday was hardly inspirational, especially his 5th tackle kick, errors and penalties. Gillett.. the amount of times he caught the ball and fucked around flat-footed was annoying.

The use of the bench confuses me. These guys get no time at all and Hala is massive but is not utilised well. Sigh.

The Raiders just outclassed us through their speedy and slick backs.

Everyone in their 3/4 line could easily be good enough to play Origin as early as like next year. Ferguson is already playing Origin, Lee will no doubt play for QLD if he keeps it up, Wighton is arguably the best young centre prospect in the NRL, and Croker has already played over 100 games and is only 22. That's just deadly.

And now name one up and coming bronco who will make origin. I think qld will have some dark days coming too if the broncos don't sort things out

The Raiders know they have effective backs and get the ball out to them at every opportunity. They maximize the use of their key players, we don't.

We bunch up everywhere except in the opposition's red zone and then try the passing game there. The rest, it's 99% one-out 4 or 5 tackles then kick.

just awful. **** off Gillett. Go and not try somewhere else.

Are you fucking serious? Did you watch the same game as all of us? Gillett was one of the best for the broncos. Granted being the best of a shit heap isn't the biggest compliment but there are plenty of others that deserve a **** off post dedicated to them before gillett

Why? If the whole defensive line had moved up as fast as him throughout the match it would be a very different score.

He and Parker each missed 6 tackles, Glenn 5 and Thaiday 3.

Because if you race up out of the line you can't afford to **** it up, he does it too often. I'm not anti Gillett I just don't think he is an 80 min player.
I can't blame him for the other misses he made on Edrick Lee the kid is good on his feet and has good speed and would stand up most players of Gilletts size.

Yes and no to what Gillett does. In that case, he slipped on a very wet ground. Gillett should have known that and been more cautious but, for mine, the issue is also that the whole defensive line stood flat footed. We know Gillett does that and we should be switched on anyway and be moving up and in the direction of the ball.

Hodges leaving Gillett on Lee was bad enough, but where was the cover? Where was our winger? Where was Norman? On a short blind side these days, you cover it

Gillet slipped because he was beaten by a good pass which was thrown because the passer spotted him racing out of the line, sorry to say that was all his doing. No way can the rest of the team read when he he is going to shoot up out of the line.

Hodgo was at marker by himself and Kahu got caught on the ground. He had to go open with the dummy half and got beaten by a good step. If we had 2 markers like we should that would not have happened.

It is the same basic stuff every week. It is at the point now where we know what the problems are so someone needs to fix them. Raiders are a pretty good side I think. At least we had a crack in the second half and it didn't turn into a blood bath.

I agree about Gillett, yet at the same time, the team saw where the ball moved. They stood and watched. Lazy

Yes, 2 markers there. But then good vision by the dummy half. Norman should have known Kahu was hurt

Poor defensive coaching.

We did have a crack in the second half that's for sure, we could easily have scored a couple more tries. At the very least we are going to see what type of character our players have for the rest of this year.

I just want to see 2 things more than most:

1. We have a passing game in ALL thirds with support on both sides of a ball carrier whose mission is to pass as just before he hits the line;

2. A defensive line moving as one up to hit the attack

And in all fairness, that's just basic first grade stuff isn't it ???

3-justin hodges, was pretty quiet in origin but had a great game tonight, looked dangerous everytime he had the ball and at one stage had four men on him and still managed to get an offload away, was getting frustrated during the game, was having a fight with one of the canberra players.
2-mitchell dodds, where did this effort come from ? Best game I've seen him play, couple of big runs that shifted the momentum, look forward to seeing more of these performances.
1- corey parker, great effort by him last night, never gave up last night and you could tell he was getting frustrated near the end. Been our most consistent player for years, sack fat **** thaiday and get him as our captain !

Honourable mentions: scotty prince, thought that he had a pretty decent game, was slippery out there and scored a great try

Also did anyone notice how much urgency the boys showed in the last 10 or so minutes ? Where the **** was this during the rest of the game!? They look plastered and then play great footy when the game was already over...someones gotta get the chop!

Norman has improved on last year a lot, he's surprisingly safe at the back when it comes to diffusing kicks and I would say he belongs in our 17, buuuuuut... He is leaving and we need to use somebody who's here for the long run, same deal with Prince except he is shit.

With the Broncos, it's like they feel entitled to win if they put in effort. Your game plan can't just be aim for 90% completion rate and HOPE for points.

I'll give them this. The Raiders and the Warriors had a certain degree of luck in getting to their 18 point starts. But no team, especially not the Broncos at the moment, are going to win by getting down on themselves when we aren't the first to score despite the fact we had the first 4 sets in the opposition 20.

I dont care that he slipped. What I do care about is watching him give up on plays that lead to 2 other tries. Thats half the reason why we are in this shit because the players obviously think they are better than what they are. Too afraid to work.

Here's what cost us the game:

1) Kicking. Either they're under too much pressure (in which case use blockers better or stand deeper) or they just suck, but it was woeful. Again. And whoever was taking the kick-offs, the deepest I saw was 10 metres from the tryline. The first one landed on the 20. 30 metres from a kickoff? Just gifting field position. I suspect they're going for height & hang time over distance, so the ball is received only moments before the defence arrives, but what's the point if you're giving the opposition 20 metres head start anyway?

2) Defensive line. A couple of injured players notwithstanding, there's no point rushing up on the kick receiver with one or two defenders, especially if they're not too fleet of foot. Pretty much all of their tries & linebreaks were started by a poor defensive line. Yes their backs are pretty good, but we made them look like world-beaters.

3) Fatigue HAS to be a factor. Yes, mid-match peaks & troughs are mostly mental, but you'd have less mental fatigue if you're not as physically fatigued. Just because Glenn, Thaiday, Parker & Gillett are all capable of 80 minutes, doesn't mean they should. Play them for 60 minutes each, especially when Hannant is back, because he and McGuire can play 50 - 55 minutes with no drop in performance, leaving Hala with 20 - 25 minutes and the other bench prop (Dodds or Anderson) with 30-ish.
