POST GAME Round 16 - Roosters vs Broncos

Can you explain EXACTLY what he was supposed to do? No, not a throwaway line like, make a tackle, put his body on the line, no. Tell me what he physically had to do to satisfy you. That means, speed up, slow down, move left, move right, levitate, backpeddle, what?

Describe in detail what you think he physically did wrong? Be precise now.

I'm at a loss to understand. What was he supposed to do? I cannot for the life of me think of anyone in the world who could make a tackle in that situation. He was covering one direction but he cannot cover two, no one can. The attacker cut back behind him, I just don't know what you guys expect. 10 out of 10 times the fullback couldn't do anything about that.

There's a few things he could've done differently.

You'll notice that he's retreating diagonally at full speed towards our left hand side corner post, that's not how you're taught to defend in a 1 on 1 situation at Fullback. In these scenarios you're taught to play either A) passive and jogging (so that you're in a position to match his lateral movement, but still in a position to accelerate once he commits to his line) or B) aggressive and squared up (get yourself between him and the goal line and then close the gap between yourself and the attacker, forcing him to make a much faster decision than he's anticipating).

If you're retreating at full speed diagonally with a guy running at full pace towards the goal line, you've already let them score. Instead of trying to sprint diagonally towards where he perceived Butcher would be if he maintained a straight line, he should have run SLOWER (yes, I know this is a bizarre thing to request from Boyd) and squared his body up with Butcher once he committed to a line.

At the point where Butcher makes his step on the inside, Boyd is in between him and the goal line, which is good, however because he was over-committing to the line that Butcher was initially running, he has no possible way to defend any sort of step to the left. I can only assume that Boyd was going at full speed because it's significantly more embarrassing for a Fullback to get outpaced by a forward than it is to get stepped by one.

As you'll see here, he's only about 2-3 metres away from Butcher at this point in time, and that's well after Butcher has made his step and Boyd has overrun it. If he was more patient, he would've been at least within arms reach of Butcher at this point and able to attempt a tackle, which is obviously better than not laying a finger on him.

TL;DR - Boyd was over-committing to the line that Butcher was running, which made Butcher's decision incredibly easy to take a step back to the left and score untouched. There's many Fullback's in the NRL who would of at the very least been in a position to attempt a tackle in this exact scenario. (I'm not suggesting that Boyd should have stopped him here, it's a very difficult scenario with a barnstorming 2nd rower running at you, but at the very least he should have been able to lay a hand on him)

I can't. I have switched off two of the last three games, I feel so dirty and maybe I'm not a true fan.
Same for me, although i think it's an idication you are more a fan if you dont want to see your side embarrassed consistently [emoji17]

Lawyered.

Sorry but that was always going to happen with roosters close to full strength. We were never going to be a chance, injuries and form are crippling us. Very hard to get out of a form slump like this with a full strength squad let alone a one with an injury list like ours.

Deardon puts ball on ground. Morris flicks it away with his foot. Video ref sees it in slow mo. "Ball lost by Deardon". Fucking twilight zone sometimes.

We need the second ref back to watch the ruck. The Roosters were just holding our jerseys preventing us from getting up, "6 again".

Sounds like sour grapes I know but even if we get on an even keel with teams in the future we still have to overcome this bullshit.
Can't agree. Deardon put the ball down on Morris's foot. Then pulls his foot away and ball moves.

Having slept on it I'm of a firm mind that last night the team were much more committed, Boyd and Kahu to an extent were the exceptions. There was more aggression in the tackle and there were a few occasions where Joffa stood up to JWH. Not sure about the knee to Friend's head. I don't think it was deliberate and it was JWH that knocked him out and then berated the ref to take some action.

We were obviously seriously under-strength and no Broncos supporter should feel we were as bad as those one-eyed laughing hyenas from south of the border are making out.

Defence is an issue of course, but that does not magically get fixed just because Pies left a few days ago. We need time to learn proper defensive systems and we need to have practiced those systems for so long that we have the confidence in them.

One of our biggest issues is our inability to bring the ball back from our own line. Oates used to make yards but that is long gone. Aside from him our other backline players just find it a challenge to break the line or at least get us over the advantage line so that our next set can continue the momentum.

All of our young backs are just not experienced or hardened enough to NRL and invariably find themselves being pushed backwards instead of bending the line and offering up a quick play the ball. if this one area was rectified it would give our forwards such a huge boost in momentum for the remainder of the set.

The side we are running on at present is all we can muster, but as i said at least i feel (except for a couple) they are genuinely having a go right until the 80th minute. i never got the feeling last night that the side did their usual head drop after 30 or so points. Towards the end they were still competing despite the comical officiating they were confronted with.

One vote for this bloke to be our new defensive coach.

Can't agree. Deardon put the ball down on Morris's foot. Then pulls his foot away and ball moves.
I think your eyes might be painted on as well. Go back and watch it again. It's a white boot that flicks the ball.

What’s to be done about Staggs defence? He’s a turnstile, every team goes down his side, I can’t think of a player that’s so indecisive in defence.

You know one thing I did notice is that every time Bullemor took a hit up, he was driven backwards and looked really small compared to the opposition forwards. Was I seeing things?

Right so you are agreeing it was Morris who flicked the ball and it should have been our penalty?
I am agreeing that Morris flicked the ball away when he moved his foot. But Deardon placed the ball on his foot so what was Morris to do? Not move his foot? It's up to Deardon to play the ball correctly. Every time the player placing the ball makes contact with the markers leg and loses the ball it's a knock on/lost ball. I see no difference with this.

There is now no doubt that there is a agenda to destroy the Broncos. The refereeing throughout this season since COVID lockdowns is bent toward losing games for Brisbane. This is indisputable.

I don't think we need any extra assistance there, we have done a very thorough job of destroying ourselves from within.

This team's new found ability to concede tries from the most seemingly innocuous situation all over the field really is unbelievable.
