POST GAME Round 2 - Broncos vs Cowboys

I thought there were some controversial calls and I don't have a problem with acknowledging them as long as we don't use it as an excuse. The players can't control the referees, they just have to suck it up and try to take them out of the contest as much as possible.

The calls that got me...

Kahu being taken out in the air by Linnett. The ruling there is black and white, so how the referees missed that is beyond me and the Cowboys benefited big time from it.

The forward pass from Robbo to Kahu. Obvious and had a huge bearing on the play.

I can live with it, but the Cowboys should have had a scrum inside the Broncos 10m when Feldt was ruled to have knocked it on. Again, live I can see how the referees arrived at the decision, but I think that's an instant where limiting the bunker's jurisdiction is silly. How are you supposed to make an accurate call there? I'd hate it if it cost the Broncos a premiership and the Cows should filthy about it tonight.

No excuse mate. Just looking for clarification, both sides had some luck at times.

Wonder if the coaches and Bennett can see Milf is carrying a bit of timber?

No worries Danoz, wasn't a shot at you I just wanted to clarify before I started pointing out the errors the officials made.

There were more as well, but those are the ones that stick out.

OK with a few minutes to go we get a penalty down their end. Option 1 - tap & go.Possible outcomes - score a try & win, or not score & lose. Option 2 - take the 2, level the scores only to lose again in golden point due to the fact that the Cows have the best finisher of our time & we don't. Bet when we opted to take the 2 Paul Green cracked a huge smile.
Let me put it this way: tap and go and we DONT score. They win anyway. We looked fresher going into golden point but just missed our chances. Before anyone gets too exited, thurston missed a chance too. Its one of the reasons i hate golden point: a game can be decided on a set of skills that are rarely used in regular time and teams play a completely different way to cater for it. Better golden try, and leading score at end of extra time (ie field goals dont stop the game) but thats me.

In the replay, noticed at the death that Hunt got held down by whoever for longer than the tackle just after Roberts made that break.

Probably would have been right on the spot had he not been held back

Chris Garry has said that Milford's build is just how he is going to play now.

I look forward to JTs retirement and the cows never winning another game

I think this game showed that Morgan is definitely not a Origin level five-eight. Without Thurston, they are lost.

The refs had a bearing on the game, the injuries had a bearing on the game, errors had a bearing on the game and that happens but my biggest gripe, and I was saying it throughout, is kicking for penalties.

NQ get away with murder in the ruck and they hold down for so long and do so much dirty stuff because it works.

They know they will at times be penalised but they also know no one will go to the bin. If hey get penalised, they get a breather and time to reset their line. It benefits them tactically and physically because they are a big side and bigger guys generally tire quicker.

A penalty goal breaks momentum for the attacking team and undoes a lot of the side to side and early kicks we were doing to turn their big boys around.

Earlier in a game I can understand it but at the Death, go for broke. You lose, you lose but at least you aren't ruined by an extra ten minutes of extra time and ANOTHER mental hurdle. Such a stupid decision in the context of the game.

Said it many times in the pre-season and Round 1. He's still electric, but he's just not as nimble as he was in 2014-15 because of the weight. Really hurts to see, he still misses a million tackles, so it's not like the added weight is doing wonders for him defensively either, it's just a burden.

Completely agree.

I've said it before that piling on additional weight to a smaller framed player in order to compensate for defensive liabilities or to provide additional strength is always a bad move since it completely takes away from what they're good at. They don't have the body type to be able to use the additional weight. They're not going to suddenly be an unstoppable runner like Taumalolo. It doesn't make them a better defender, and in fact probably makes them worse anyway, having to carry more weight than they can. It also strips away their point of difference in attack and brings them down to a similar level to the rest of the field.

The added weight thing only ever works on larger framed players who naturally have the size to be able to utilise the added weight, even if it means sacrificing some speed. Their taller frame still enables them to be a strong runner without taking much away from them ability wise.

Milford's ideal playing weight was at the Raiders. He just seemed so much happier.

Need Kevin Walter as coach for halfback if Broncos need to beat cowboys.
