Despite golden point loss, the Broncos forwards have proved they can match it with the best

THE questions lingered all pre-season as to whether the young Broncos forwards have what it takes to compete at the top level.
Herman Ese’ese answered those questions loud and clear – yes, they certainly do.
While the younger members of the Cowboys pack in Patrick Kaufusi and John Asiata once again struggled to stand up for their side, Brisbane had no concerns about what their bench players could do for them.
Ese’ese was the absolute standout for Brisbane’s big men, with a last-minute error not even enough to take the gloss off the 22-year-old’s performance – really he just helped the two sides get to that golden point thriller that everyone wanted to see.
Matt Scott, Gavin Cooper, Coen Hess – none of them could stop a rampaging Ese’ese.
The slimmed-down prop made more metres than any other Brisbane forward, eating up 170m from 18 runs across 52 minutes.
He was so impressive that he was even sent back on late in the second half, replacing starting prop Adam Blair in what appeared to be an attempt to find an edge over the Cowboys.
Skipper Darius Boyd said afterwards that the performance from his young forward just showed how hard he is fighting for his spot.
“He’s trained hard all pre-season,” Boyd said.
“All the young guys have been great and they’ve really wanted to learn.
“The competition for spots is really pushing them all to play better.”
The only person who could beat Ese’ese for metres was of course wrecking ball Jason Taumalolo who clocked up 179m in 81 minutes.
For someone who thought his NRL career might have been over just 18 months ago, Ese’ese’s feat was an incredible one against one of the best packs in the competition.
He also made three tackle busts, two offloads and 20 tackles.
Unfortunately for Ese’ese, it was not enough to help his side claim the victory, but it was an effort that will be remembered well.
It is clear now why the former Bulldog won the bench spot over fellow prop Joe Ofahengaue, who not that long ago was playing in a grand final, also against North Queensland.
The Cowboys themselves have work to do with their young forwards.
Ese’ese made 60m off his first six runs while in comparison, Kaufusi made 39m from the same amount. Asiata made 77m off eight runs.
The key for Ese’ese now is to produce this form every week.
Brisbane are a team that will always have their doubters, but if Ese’ese has his way, at least they can no longer raise questions about his own potential.
