Round 20 - Cowboys vs. Broncos - Post Match Discussion

I liked the bit when the commentators were talking up Oates, jizzing over his strong hit-up, almost-tackle-breaks, and declaring him a star of the future. All the while it was Maranta with the ball.

The same commentator thought that Dodds was McGuire, what a toolbag!

my thoughts:

blistering 20mins from Hunt, faded after that - agree with other posters that when Wallace came on we lost momentum. i'm not sure there's any point to him being in the side because he didn't exactly contribute anything apart from a bunch of tackles.

hoffman was solid at the back, did a good job, got smashed - i'm not sure if he has low intelligence or just doesn't know how to position his body upon impact, but man, he's gonna be a broken man at the end of his career if he keeps playing like that.

can't remember now but we still have a few people making hail mary runs out of the line and missing tackles.

oates was pretty good on the wing for a second rower, got caught out a bit but also showed some promising signs - that shot on tate, wow!

macca did ok, though typically he does something good then manages to **** it and undo the hard work - case in point, the scoot from dummy half to have the ball stripped from him.

hodges was epic. giving sprays out left right and centre, playmaking (and doing a good job) and generally just carrying the team. you could tell hodges really wanted the win. it was cool to see everyone embrace him after the try, its clear these guys have a lot of respect for Hodges and he clearly gave them a bit of belief in themselves.

it was nice to get a win, although we nearly got done, again, by Bowen at a scrum. you'd think you'd learn but his acceleration is just too good for the bigger guys.

finally, i want to say this - I thought the reporter quizzing Thurston at HT was wrong. the guy's just come off, he knows how much pressure is on him and the side and he knows what the ledger is, they're very close to being season over, and they have some snot nosed reporter getting in his face as he's walking off the pitch, underlining every negative about how they're ****ed if they don't win, wanting to know how he's gonna turn it around? I was secretly wishing he told her to **** off.

the same bitch asks later on, do you think they're (the cowboys) playing well, on the reporter/lewis/lockyer panel. are you even ****ing watching in the first place? fair enough if the question was, what should they work on in this next half/how should they approach it, not, are they playing well?

it's a ridiculous comment by a reporter that clearly has NFI. get rid.

In regards to Yvonne (she's 'the same bitch' you referred to) just so your not confused. She is doing her job, it is what has happened all year. They do it in the NFL and the union and its a good thing for the fans to get an insight into what the player is thinking. I love JT but seriously if he can't handle a question when walking into the sheds, and fucking Tyrone Roberts can, then there is a problem.

In regards to her asking the panel there thoughts, once again she is doing her job. No one gives a **** what she thinks that's why she is asking the experts and steering the conversation

i believe there was talk that if the NRL want more money invested then they have to be more open with the media and doing stuff like this at half time IS required.

nfl do it. nba do it. the AFL bloody does it. why anyone thinks the NRL can't is beyond me.

In regards to her asking the panel there thoughts, once again she is doing her job. No one gives a **** what she thinks that's why she is asking the experts and steering the conversation

exactly.

I get why they do it, access to players all that jazz, make it more interactive. I know they've been doing it this year, but I guess because it's getting to the crunch time of the year the q's they're asking are going to more pointed, I suppose.

I just don't see the benefit in getting up in someones grill at HT and dogpiling on them about how they have 40mins to turn their season around.

It wouldn't matter if it was JT or Jamie Soward imo, I just don't like the practice.

And, yeah, again, I know what's doing when she's asking the panel, asking experts for their view, thats fine, but the question itself is just vacuous - if she's a reporter, what's she actually reporting on? Clearly not the game.

i dunno if the NRL pre-plan interviews, but in the afl, the player to be interviewed at the breaks is organised pre game. so they know they are going to have a commentator 'in their grill' for 30 seconds.

resulted in an awkward situation a couple of weeks ago as a st kilda player had just copped a head knock and was interviewed at 3qtr time but he didnt know where he was.

Yup... She's my favourite NRL female commentator, shits from great heights over Lara and Erin, and she's a Qld'er!

My guess would be that she's being used as an advocate of the fans. Asking the questions that, say, a viewer would ask.

To be fair Brett Firman was the slowest playmaker i have ever seen including Wallace

Yep, but he was an Australian schoolboy and played on every rep team named in his junior days and was expected tp be a star which is why he got an extended run in the NRL with many different clubs. Hunt isn't much different, big reputation but yet to deliver.

I know it'll keep going down this path so whatever, but it's stuff like this which is why Origin now kicks off at closer to 830 instead of 7:45.

All this interaction, the profiling, the constant hype, all in the name of ratings ... I hate it. I just want to watch football, and you never know when you should sit down to just watch the game without missing it (or being subjected to dribble).

Firman was great until he badly broke his leg.

St George were unlucky in the early 2000's, had both Head and Firman come through who were destined to become superstars, only to have some terrible long term injuries and never get back to anywhere near their best.

I was just trying to point out that he had no chance with his speed. At least Hunt is fast enough just has to prove he is fast enough between the ears

Yes, that injury certainly didn't help him and no doubt influenced the rest of his career. Bit like Ty Williams.

I don't think anyone thinks Hunt is some messiah at number 7. But he has what we've lacked in the halves since Lockyer left, and that's a football brain. Granted he hasn't been able to execute things consistently in his chances in the 7, and he recognises that. He's said he drifts in and out of games and he has to stop doing that.

I think if he's been given the call that it's his position for the rest of the season, he will have the patience to work on it. Whereas in the past he's been thrown in for an injury or a change up with an attitude of "don't **** it up" and that hasn't helped him.

Basically, he has 6 weeks to show he's worth giving a shot to next year. Show us what you got Ben.
