Round 20 - Cowboys vs. Broncos - Post Match Discussion

Just goes to show Hoffman to fullback is temporary. Barba will be here next year

Hoffman always said he always wanted to play 5/8th. So it could be something like 1. Barba/Milford 6. Hoffman 7. Hunt if we don't sign a half.

Yes Hoffman at 5/8, that's one way to kill all attacks. Can he even kick? Hoffman/Hunt would be as bad if not worse than Wallace/Prince.

Just looked at the player stats and Corey Parker had a mother of a game, he made 47 tackles ran the ball 22 times and made 164 meters with 3 offloads and didn't miss one tackle. Legend

Hoffman may say he wants to play 5/8th. But the facts are Norman got chosen over him and Hodges is the preferred fullback in attack because he can't throw a simple cut out pass when the ball gets given to him out the back.

I'm not saying I would put him there, not even close. I'm just guessing what we are going to do if we don't sign a half.

Not sure where you got those stats from but on nrl.com:

Oates - 177 metres and 3 line breaks
Parker - 142 metres 49 tackles and 21 runs
Gillet - 141 metres 34 tackles and 17 runs with 5 offloads and 1 missed tackle - but of course, nrl.com must have that wrong. Gillett always misses 5 tackles each match, doesn't he ...

Scott - 186 metres

Did anyone notice maranta had an awesome game by his standards last night? Average by nrl standards though

As good as Hodges is, he should not be the one constructing our best plays. That is the job of the halves. Manly have got the right system - Jamie Lyon is used for some great plays, but Foran and Cherry-Evans are used to create the majority of tries.

Yeah, but there isn't much we can do about that. Manly have the best halves combo. We have the worst, alongside the Drags and Eels.

I hear you. I agree that Manly have better halves, but it's just that, in principle, our halves should be what they're called - playmakers.

How long does it usually take for NRL.com to get a full replay up on its website?

Yes there are a few points to my post.

1. The fantastic effort by Oates
2. The work Gillett puts in that goes less recognized than it should be by the Gillett-is-overrated brigade on these forums
3. The fact that Scott is the best prop in the game bar none

Do you have a problem with any of that?

For mine, any player that can create great plays should be doing just that, which means adjusting the game plan to suit. Sure, the halves AND dummy half are crucial in the middle but it ought not to end there.

James Graham is another example of a 2nd 5/8 more than less, and we have shown that Hannant and McGuire can do similar. So next week, I would like to see Hannant (if he plays) and McGuire pass the ball instead of that shite one-out crap.

Sticking Hodges out wide and not giving him quality ball has been such a negative play for most of this season. We effectively forced him to play dummy half just so he get his hands on the ball. His skills, similar in effect but different in style to Lyons were seen yesterday in full force, along with his running from the back.

For mine, Hodges should spend some good game time as a 2nd 5/8, especially since Prince is so hot and cold ... and lukewarm.

The change in halves and positioning showed what Gillett is capable of with much better to come when we start to fully utilize his strengths: hole running is one example. Just need to construct the plays which I hope Hunt starts doing. Last night, he showed vision I haven't seen before.

And Oates: what a revelation. 3 line breaks, a try assist and a try: GIVE HIM MORE BALL. Our (better) answer to the Beast. Just get him quality ball.
