Round 20 - Titans vs Broncos - Build Up Thread

to be fair most of his criticism on this forum has been that he runs it one out too much.

I would say 80% of all our runs are 1 out. Norman is either running or passing never running to the line and creating. I'm reluctant to blame him completely because it could be the conservative coaching but as others have said he improvement has flatlined.

Norman is starting to look like a younger version of John Sutton. Sutton has some very good games but I don't think he really knows what he's doing.

If you made a Sutton highlight reel of tries he sets up it would consist of nothing but a heap of draw and pass close to the line with a centre or second rower going through a hole or barging over, if Norman continues on that path it'd be a shame. I think that's why he looked good playing halfback, he could distribute the ball to Lockyer who could cutout or whatever. We might as well play him at first receiver every attacking raid.

just hope its a dry track this week. we seem to play so many wet or at least greazy games.

Well I'm heading down with a bunch of mates and sitting in the away supporter's bay.

If we construct a set play in their 20 I will lose my shit.

Whitchurch played back row for Redcliffe today and went well, in a well below par Dolphins side. Ideal bench utility at the moment I think. Plenty of versatility, makes plenty of metres in his runs and tackles hard. Side I'd go with:

1. Hoffman
2. Beale
3. Hodges
4. Glenn
5. Maranta
6. Norman
7. Wallace
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Civoniceva
11. Gillett
12. Thaiday
13. Parker
-------------------------
14. Hunt
15. Te'o
16. Hannant
17. Whitchurch

Looks a light bench on paper but McGuire has shown he plays best the more minutes he gets and Thaiday and Parker are capable of playing front row if injury strikes. Hannant and Petero can interchange with each other.

As for Hoffman, did someone mention he is a hopeless 1 on 1 defender and did that person see that match saving tackle against one of the most powerful wingers in the comp on Friday night? Hoffman just needs to get his timing back and he will deliver the results desired. Remember he was our Player of the Year in 2010 and that award isn't handed out lightly. A mate of mine and I were discussing today that Griffin-coached sides have a history of timing their best form for the right end of the season and now that the Origin period is over I think you'll see plenty of improvement in the Broncos over the coming weeks and Hoffman will be a big part of that. As will Norman and Wallace.

Yeah that guy would be me, he makes only 50% of his one on one tackles, the worst of all fullbacks in the league, I know stats aren't the be all and end all but neither is Hofflol succeeding in making a single tackle that saves a try.

Haha turn it up. As all fullbacks will tell you, if the 12 blokes in front of him can't stop them, then what hope has he got? ;-)

Nah I see what you are saying but you're right stats aren't the be all end all. Fact is that the tackle on Vatuvei was a HUGE play in the context of not only the game, but also our season. Huge play. Run that same play against every team and there's plenty of fullbacks who wouldn't make that tackle. Hell, run it again against us and Hoffman may not even make the tackle again, but fact is he did and it was a massive tackle. You don't make tackles like that if you're a dud defender.

Achieving the bold part is one of the hardest things to do in any kind of sport, and it's also the sign of a very good coach.
I hope you're right!

Like the make up of that side Jeba, although I'd swap Gillett for Te'o on form.

This Hoffman hate is driving me up the wall. Then again any comparison to Tim Smith will do that to me. Hoffy was great for us last year, are we forgetting his fantastic defensive display in R1 2011 where he saved our arse 3-4 times at the back? On Matt Bowen no less, one of the greatest attacking players in the game. But yes, definite one season wonder.

Hoffy has playmaking ability, tell me, how did we score our first try of the season? Heck, I still remember the 2010 game against the Titans where his playmaking proved the difference. Yes, there's a problem right now. I'm not entirely sure why Hoffy is taking the ball himself and whether or not it's because of the poor lines his outside men run (which was a problem, look at the poor angle Hodges was running at against the Warriors) or his own ineptitude but whatever it is I hope to see it addressed in the coming weeks.

I get the feeling he's not at 100%. Ever since that Kiwis game he always seems to wear a grimace on his face and go down clutching at his ankle. In the past couple of matches he's been hit by some very heavy defence and it appears it's taking it's toll on his body. It could be too late for him to recoup this season but next year Hoffy should be right.

As for this game, yes last week was ugly footy but it was a spirited win too. I can see us building on it and by September we'll be playing champagne Rugby League.

the broncos outside backs have intentionally played within themselves all year. we are lulling the other 15 sides into a false sense of security. in a months time the set plays, the second man plays, the support plays, the hard angled runs will all explode and we will win 8 games in a row to smash the competition away and win the GF 44 to nil.

dreams.

I do remember Hoffman being much better with his play making early in his career. He seems to have lost it a bit of late. Not sure if it is due to our lack of depth.

It's better than having no playmaking ability, which some people have been sprouting.

You are a Redcliffe fan, aren't you? Redcliffe fans seem to overrate their players a bit, I noticed. :p
