spot on, got himself into a bad position and froze up. He could have done almost anything to improve on what he did. He took his eyes off the players coming through in support. It's like he was wondering if he left the iron on at home.

Positioning is a very important part of the Referee's job and he made a huge blunder there, combined with how many Captains calls that where right, Atkins had a terrible day at the office.

He is very lucky it didn't change who won the game.

Devils advocate here but that would actually be the case if the match fixing/game management was in-depth enough
There's even games like Thursday where both fans feel it was rigged against them! How deep does it go?

Every time I see the BS Staggs offside decision, I get more and more confused.

"Supporting the live decision" is only meant to be for when the camera angles don't clearly show the play. here that is not the case. The vision clearly shows the entire play.

I'm going to watch Annseley on Monday, because WHEN he justifies the officials failing to follow proper procedure, it will be a masterclass in spin that may come in handy one day

Besides getting in the way of a try, I don't think Atkins did that bad a job. I also don't ont think many on field refs do a bad job. They're human, and like the players will make mistakes now and then (especially when you have pointless linesmen, and have such a fast game with so much to keep an eye on).

The problem I have, is with the bunker, who seem to be the ones making all the calls about sin bins, foul play, etc. Also, with all the angles and technology they have, still get it soooo wrong (e.g. staggs disallowed try).

That line is misleading. on the left it's pretty much half way between the 10 and 20 (so 15 metres out). On the right it's probably 17 metres out. If anything the line should be at least 1 metre ahead of where it is in front of Staggs. It's not even line ball, Staggs was way on-side. "Supporting the on- field decision", when the refs and touchies don't have the replays and freeze-frame of the bunker, is unfathomable. There is no possible justification for that call.

The crop makes it look misleading if you look down the bottom properly. You can't see enough of the sideline so your eyes play tricks. Focus on it being parallel to the black and white line of the try line.

As is increasingly common, the whole game was a circus.

The only time they ever mention agreeing with the on field decision is when they painstakingly check every single angle and can’t make a distinction. As far as we saw they watched a few seconds of 1 angle and said “whatever the ref reckons, we cbf”.

Then there was the on field ref yet again having to overrule the bunker and tell them to look again when Staggs tried to bat the ball back over the dead ball line. Should have been entirely obvious that Staggs had touched it but the bunker seemingly didn’t pick up on this at all.

There’s the obvious try saver from Atkins on Smoothy but shit happens. Not so worried about that.

The ref was proven wrong on about 5 challenges. I would be crucified at work if external stakeholders pointed out me making 3 massive mistakes in 40 minutes of work.

Atkins had a stinker bro.
I think there was a total of 7 successful captains challenges between the two teams.
That's on top of the bad calls that didn't get challenged and the howlers on Staggs/Smoothy and Haas.

He had a terrible night.

One of those challenges was to get a clear dangerous hit on Walsh examined that had been ignored and could have resulted in us losing the ball. That second half was a farce both from the refereeing on the field and the bunker.

I'm sure if every decision in an NRL match was challenged there would be quite a few that are successful. Sometimes I think all the extra camera angles has ruined the game for the fans at home.

Do you work to a level of effort where you are fatigued ?
Do you have 26 work mates who are constantly making mistakes you have to make judgements on ? Do those work mates try to lie to you when they make a mistake .
