POST GAME [Round 3, 2022] Broncos vs Cowboys

Something is better than nothing, let's be honest.
I have this horrible suspicion Jake is playing how Kevvie wants him to play. His entire decent into a Macca clone happened under Kevvie's tutelage. Kevvie has made a point of saying defence was to be the priority, and that's what's he's got with Jake. He must've liked what he saw to make him captain.

I don't completely disagree with Kevvie and to be honest, I am in two minds as well about what to do from here. I'd definitely be looking at a couple of changes but not too many. This was a horrible performance BUT despite my team list, I don't mind the idea of giving most of these guys a chance to amend next week. This would have been a really good wake up call, let's see who swims next week.

What is clear is that we need another 9. Niu was awful, truly awful BUT I'm not even against giving him another go IF Kevvie isn't willing to take a punt on Herbie (I would personally). I would like that as Lee would be really helpful at centre. I'd consider swapping Staggs to the left and putting Lee right too simply to try and help out Staggs with having Oates on his outside and Lee would certainly help ease Selwyn's defensive headaches frequently caused by Toes.

Big post coming... but **** it why the **** not... I'm going full 17 baby!!

1. Tesi - Had an absolute shocker of a game. The big issue for us is that every other option is a question mark. None of them came through the juniors as an out and out gun at the back, which means putting any of them back there would see them developing on the job. I would've liked to see Herbie thrown back at fullback for the last 20mins of this game. If he does some nice stuff then you know it's an option and can pull the trigger on Tuesday.

2. Oates - Solid game and we need his meters. As long as he's not having an absolute shocker he keeps his position.

3. Staggs - Absolute shocker of a game. I think his lack of involvement has him trying to force the issue when he does get it. I feel like his lack of involvement has probably been more of a coaching decision than a personal one i.e. just let Oates, Herbie and Cobbo do the heavy lifting we want you ready to go when the spread is on. If I'm the coaching staff I'm telling him to get involved. If he has more touches in a game he may feel less pressure to create something when a backline spread is on. I don't think he's the best meter eater on get out sets, but just telling him to get his hands on the ball would help him to get into the flow of the game.

4. Herbie - No changes you keep doing you. I do feel though that he could be given a run at fullback and bring Brenko in. It would be a massive call by Kevvie to move Herbie given he's been our best back by far and his defence has been strong so moving him doesn't need to happen (except for other players failing) and could also disrupt existing structures.

5. Cobbo - Another player who had a shocker. Looks to be struggling with fatigue and I also wonder if he might be struggling being on the right. I think we could get away with dropping him to Qcup and get him playing fullback for Wynnum. If he starts going alright then we have an option to bring him back as fullback later in the year. Pereira can easily cover his wing position in the mean time.

6. Albert - Another who had a poor game. Just didn't feel like he had all that much to work from. I don't recall us getting too many good ptb's to work off. It's hard for halves to do much when the defence is instantly in your face. What I would like to see if that does start happening is condensing our attacking play. If they're getting up in your face then don't be so sideways, get in at the ruck and attack through the middle. Get it at first receiver and work some plays back through the middle... tap your forwards on the shoulder and tell them to only focus on getting a quick ptb and when it comes work it straight through the middle to build on the momentum.

7. Reynolds - Everyone will complain about his two kicks out on the full, but he was literally inches from two huge plays. I will say that it felt like he was forcing those kicks though... and I would say he felt pressured to do that because he wasn't exactly getting a platform to work from. The cows dominated our forwards and absolutely destroyed us on the kick chase.

8. Palasia - When the game started I thought I hope we don't lose a second rower because I think our only cover for the position is Palasia. Of course we would then go on to lose a second rower and we would also lose them right at the time that Palasia would've come off. I think Kevvie was asking a bit much of Palasia to play a full stint at prop and then head out to the edge and be Reynolds protector.

9. Turps - He's just not taking advantage of any quick ptb's that we might get in our half and isn't providing us anything from one of the most important positions on the field. There needs to be a clear directive from the coaching staff about what they expect of Turps during play. If there's quick ptb is it his role to run at every opportunity (ala Cook a few years back) or is it to get it out to the backline and spread it. He's not good enough at the position to be able to make that call himself. If we get a quick ptb he doesn't seem to know what to do next.

10. Haas - Keep doing you. Seemed a change of tact from Kevvie to bring Haas off early and I'm not sure that was the right call. Our middle rotation was disrupted by having to move Palasia to the edges so I think get Haas through his normal 30min stint was a must. Reassess at halftime and then figure out the right time to bring him on in the second half. Seemed like he was off the field way too long this week.

11. Capewell - I don't have too many issues with him at the moment. He's a footballer, he's not there to take 20 hit ups a game. I think his role (as well as Riki's role) is to just focus on defence. The other guys can make the meters. He had some nice runs and some offloads in the first half, but Capewell's value is his glue defence on the edges and popping up around the ball. One thing we probably need to do more is kick to our left so it's Capewell, Herbie and Oates doing the kick chase instead of the right edge. I can understand wanting to kick to Cobbo, but we it could be used as a trick play and used sparingly when we are in the right position instead of every kick to the right.

12. Riki - Unfortunate to lose him early. His challenge is to become an 80min defender and Reynolds protector out on that edge. Kevvie was probably feeling safe with how he and Capewell started the year, but it fell apart when he was injured and we didn't have TC on the bench as cover.

13. Carrigan - Another solid game, but would prefer he touches it less inside the 20m. I think it's more of a coaching decision than Carrigan wanting it every second tackle.

14. James - Thought he was found out this week. We've been able to cover him for the first two rounds, but relied on him a bit more this week with Palasia moving to the edge and Haas coming off early. Might get a spell with Flegler back next week

15. Kobe - Had another solid game and I think he is one player that pretty well knows his role. Think we can rely on him being one of those back up middles over the course of the year

17. Billy - Didn't have as much impact as previous weeks, but I think that was associated with the lack of a platform being set by the forward pack and being dominated by the cows forwards.

24. Jensen - Thought he looked good when he came on and I feel like Kevvie waited far too long before bringing him on. The second Palasia had to move to the edge his middle had been disrupted. He also should've noted that the cows were dominating us through the middle and looked to keep it fresh. Probably would've liked to see him come on instead of James especially if you're taking Haas off.

Love it! I also thought that when Riki went off, who is your most mobile big man? Haas. I would have shifted him to 12 and that way he can play 80 anyway and against the smaller men, he could have been devastating.

Poor usage of the bench and responding on his feet yet again by Kevvie.

I’m genuinely curious how people think Niu stacks up with this list of fullbacks.

Turpin needs to be dropped, our attack is non existent with him at 9. Every side we come up against can just jump out of the line knowing he’s never going to run it & his delivery is soo slow they are already up in our face by the time we get the ball. He’s just a straight jacket on our attack. I don’t understand why Kevvie waits soo long to get Billy on.

I’m not convinced Paix is the answer either, particularly with the defence Turpin does, but maybe if we are more threatening out of dummy half we might not need to defend soo much?

Paix ran twice last night.

He played 80 minutes so that's a positive.

Some teams second choice is better than our first choice.

Definitely bottom 3 with Laurie and Campbell but the latter two have more potential.

what's your thoughts on our 9 and 1 options? and do you think Cobbo should go back to cup?

Herbie was a fullback coming through the juniors playing in England it's really an unknown how he would go but if he plays like he plays at centre he's without a doubt our best option.
As I understand it Herbie played some fullback, but during ISC he was almost exclusively playing wing.

His "fullback coming through" could've been playing fullback in Manchester as a 13 yr old... he played several years in ISC and was almost always a winger... left sided winger I believe.

I believe the only out and out fullback coming through as a junior was Tesi (i.e. "the next Darren Lockyer" and "only had to watch him for 5mins"). Even Cobbo was outside backs / centre, and I think as a kid he was also in the forwards??

I think Herbie is potentially our best bet at fullback though, but I think he would very much be learning on the job... what I would say is that for most criteria required for a fullback it's potentially only ball playing that is lacking.

He's good under the high ball, massive engine, strong runner of the ball, strong 1v1 defender, pops up everywhere and can bust the line.

I think he could be lethal playing through the middle and taking advantage of any quick ptb's by running it straight back down the guts and keeping momentum going.

It would also solve a problem we have with our backs... we have Staggs, Cobbo, Herbie and then Mariner, but need to figure out where to put them all.

Most of them at this stage are suited to centers or wing, but we can't keep investing huge cap space in outside backs. We need one of them to step up as a spine player, otherwise the big decision has to be made on who to cut... and we don't like FOMO.

If Herbie can actually become a fullback it solves an issue... and maybe Cobbo takes the role in a few years with Herbie moving back to the wing.

Poorly

Surely Piakura comes in for Riki. He's on the big bucks, time to perform.
I was at the game what’s wrong with Riki and how long? Also Piakura didn’t play this round because he was injured to so probably not going to play.
