POST GAME [Round 3, 2022] Broncos vs Cowboys

League these days is a very simple game. The team with the best line speed, has harder first contact in defence, runs hard onto the ball with good shape, completes high and wins field position will win 9 times out of 10.
It always has been. There's a reason Bennett has always been a brilliant coach, because he knows footy players are dumb, so he gives them simple roles. Run hard, defend hard, you'll win 70% of your games, get fancy at the business end when you have confidence and have executed the basics week in week out. If you've got a few genuinely smart players, like the Smiths, Lockyers, Slaters, of the world, you drill them with a game plan.

The forwards just get a "white line is over there, run hard towards it" line.

Also I don't blame Reynolds for not having a good game. The Cowboys ran at him all afternoon. He needs to be protected better and not spend the entire game making tackles. Kobe would be the perfect protector for him. Let Carrigan do exactly what he's been doing at prop.

Kelly was invisible today as well, he has been key to our wins and he went missing.
He also turned his back on a live ball that ended in a try. It was awkward but shouldn't have happened. I was very disappointed with his game yesterday

I get his point though. Our kick-chase was terrible, as was our linespeed and pressure on their kickers. Their halves were able to play in dinner suits because we let them. Kev is saying that that should not be the case moving forward. Kev knew exactly what he was going to rev them up about. I don't expect any drastic changes beyond injury cover.

I'd be telling Staggs and Cobbo to not worry about the big plays and go back to the basics - running hard, tacking hard, and chasing kicks hard. The resulting possession and fatigue in the opposition will allow the points to come later.

The only other thing I'd be doing would be bringing Walters in at the 25th minute mark.
No I disagree @Morkel. Go back and listen to his presser again. He's dismissing the Cows tries that resulted from kicks as if to say apart from that our defence is sound. Well sorry, but defusing kicks/bombs is part of your defence and it sucks. It was also where our attack was sadly missing. If a coach can't recognise this after 20 minutes and make a note to rectify (if not during the game at least at halftime) it and reset the gameplan he's sadly lacking the vital credentials to be an elite coach.

Instead we went backwards after halftime and played worse than the first half. I love kevvie don't get me wrong, but Sunday arvo at Lang park he was schooled royally by Payten who I don't think that much of so Kevvie went a bit down in my estimations.

You could easily flip that on its head and ask how often, over the last several seasons, have the broncos gone into a game as strong favourites off a couple of good wins, and turned up with a great attitude and performance ?
Even when we were a functional NRL team under Wayne Bennett, the Broncos have developed a habit of only producing big performances off the back of an ass kicking the week before. I don't know how or why, but over the last few years our players just seem to drink their own kool aid far too easily and quickly.
That abysmal performance dished up yesterday suggests some of the players are drinking their own piss - it was astonishingly inept.

Turpins slow delivery & lack of variety around the ruck is why it always looks like the other team is offside, there were times yesterday where Reynolds was getting it first receiver and by the time he got the ball he already had the defence in his face.
like 1910 has mentioned that the Cowboys were pushing the limits of keeping the 10 , which is why it looked that way because they were offside.
we need to do the same and also combat this with darts behind the ruck and more width , more body's in motion instead of one of the ruck.
when you know where they're running it's easy to pick them off.
either way Cowboys totally controlled the middle and out enthused us and wore us down, we apparently only had 1 tackle in Cowboys 20 in the second half which tells the story.

Starting to wonder if we'll see Staggs playing 2nd row before too long, he seems to have lost a step of speed, and has certainlity lost any of the lateral movement that he had pre-ACL. Looking like a massive mistake of a contract.

Were you taking a piss when he accelerated and swerved past Valentine Holmes ?

Pretty much the same thing was happening to Milford...for years.

I just don't understand how or why they all came out so sluggish right off the bat. Every single player after the first few mins looked absolutely cooked besides Herbie and haas. When cobbo and Oates made those early breaks it looked like they were both running through quick sand. It was polar opposite to the previous 2 games. Let's not even talk about the poor defensive line speed.

How can everyone be gassed at the start of the game? As I said their fitness looked quite good prior to this.

Corey Oates’ time is up. He looked like he was towing a caravan when he took that intercept in the first half.

It’s difficult to believe he is only 27. This is his last year at the Broncos, surely.

Isaako in the pre-season and against the Rabbitohs, he looks like he has turned a corner and will get back to being the Isaako we all know and loved.

He had a bludger past couple of years, but when you see the interview he did with the NRL over what happened with his father, it's no wonder why his footy was affected. The bloke would rock up to training and sit in his car and break down. But it looks like he has finally made peace and has accepted it and is moving on. I was expecting him to have a big year this year.

For mine, Broncos should have stuck with him and gone in the market this year for a fullback to take over for next year.

I've never really rated Tesi all that much. He certainly isn't our answer at fullback.
He was never even a consistently average player. He had games where he had a highlight reel finish and was shit for the rest of the game but his worst was the dumbest shit a footy player could do. Isaako was done at the Broncos and deservedly so, Niu still hasn't been anywhere near as bad as Isaako was most games.

That may be, but it’s looked that way for the best part of last year too.

I thought Oates was good and was one of the few who could hold his head high. He looked off balance and the big bloke takes a little while to wind up anyway.

Most teams these days leave the defensive line when the player playing the ball puts the ball on the ground. Which is before they should but because the whole line moves the referee doesn't call players offside.

I'm not thinking it's all doom and gloom as much as some of you blokes are.

One bad game, after a couple of really gritty performances. It doesn't mean we need to ship off half a dozen players, it doesn't mean the coach is on notice, it's one bad game.

It's on again next week, we move on.

Yeh, I’ve been critical of Oates a fair bit the last couple of years, and he is no doubt getting too slow to play wing.

But he’s been fine the first few weeks. He doesn’t take that intercept, they score, it’s that simple.

He doesn’t even make the top 10 of our biggest worries from the weekend.
