POST GAME [Round 3, 2022] Broncos vs Cowboys

Haven't commented on the game or read any comments on the game, so I'll lay my thoughts out.

Firstly, the good. Haas, Carrigan & Farnworth. Pretty much our best 3 players week-in and week-out at the moment. Palasia was good when in the middle, but when he shifted to the edge he turned to shit. Several defensive mistakes, killed most of our attacking plays down that right edge by darting back in-field rather than keeping the ball moving out to Staggs. Obviously needs to stay in the middle, regardless of injuries. I'd sooner have Walters out on an edge than Palasia.

Now, the bad. The spine was terrible. Turpin hasn't got a clue, there was 3-4 occasions I counted where Reynolds was waiting for the ball on the right with numbers and he decided to go left to Kelly. He also refuses to run the ball unless the defense literally isn't near him. He's quickly becoming the Ben Simmons of the NRL. Teams don't guard Ben Simmons from the 3-point line, because they know he's never going to shoot them, it's the same with Turpin at hooker, teams are happy to be lazy at marker because they know Turpin sure as shit isn't going to make a linebreak. Reynolds & Kelly were both bad, especially Kelly. Willing to chalk it up as a bad game for Reynolds, but Kelly needs to show significantly more than that. He's in the team as a running, off-the-cuff Five-Eighth. That's not how he's playing, Billy Walters did a significantly better job in that role in Round 1 than Kelly is doing. For Niu it's pretty simple, he's not fit enough. Been saying it for 24 months, he needs to lose weight, and lots of it, a minimum 5kg off before I'd even consider him for the Fullback position. Cobbo is further away than I expected, he's still a kid, needs a good 12 months playing 80 minutes at Fullback in Queensland Cup. Oates when attempting to run on that linebreak was embarrassing, he's moving like Ryan James out there, I think we're going to have to move on sooner rather than later unfortunately. Speaking of Ryan James, get him out of the side please, I've never seen someone have such little impact on runs than him, he's clearly just had too many injuries in his career to have a positive influence with ball in hands. Capewell is due some criticism as well, didn't defend well, didn't have any impact on the game at all, was looking remarkably like Alex Glenn out there today. Staggs is in the same boat as Niu, needs to lose some weight. If he's so unfit that he's exhausted after taking 2 hit-ups per half, something has to change. I wish he had the same mentality is Herbie. Starting to wonder if we'll see Staggs playing 2nd row before too long, he seems to have lost a step of speed, and has certainlity lost any of the lateral movement that he had pre-ACL. Looking like a massive mistake of a contract.

I wholeheartedly endorse any calls for Herbie to shift to Fullback. We haven't had anyone fit enough to play the position for 80 minutes since Darius Boyd 2015-17. That's 5 years of unfit, or unwilling fullbacks. Enough is enough, put someone in the position who is hungry for work, and has the fitness to back it up.

This is the line-up I'd be comfortable seeing in Round 4, assuming Jordan Riki is fit.

1. Herbie Farnworth
2. Jordan Pereira
3. Brenko Lee
4. Kotoni Staggs
5. David Mead
6. Billy Walters
7. Adam Reynolds (c)
8. Pat Carrigan
9. Cory Paix
10. Payne Haas
11. Kurt Capewell
12. Jordan Riki
13. Kobe Hetherington

14. Tyson Gamble
15. Tom Flegler
16. Keenan Palasia
17. Teui Robati

So do we just lay the boot in to half our squad until they turn up and win again? Is that how this works?

Or do we get behind them and support them, just let me know aye. I am a bit confused.
What would you want Kevin Walters to do? Therein lies the answer to your question.

Time for changes already. Can see we wont improve with Turpin in 9. Still don't know why he is selected each week. Offers zilch in attack. Paix/walters to start and be utility.
Strange selection choices with Jensen on the bench. We had 3 locks in the team(carrigan/hetherington/jensen) and none can play 2nd row so when Riki went down, we were shot. Should of left TC in the team. Personally Carrigan is a prop, he kills our 4th play options each set.
As much as I dont rate Isaako at 1, I wish we had him in the team. Nui is not the answer and im fuming we didnt make a big play for Hynes

Kev absolutely has to drop Staggs

Also look to shift Cobbo to fullback now as tesi was seriously found out. He's never convinced me. Worst week to let issako go... They really need to buy a fullback as I see Cobbo as an edge player. He's not the long term solution
Don't believe Selwyn should be anywhere in the team at the moment. Looked like a bewildered school kid in this game.

A+ Meltdown by several.

Same squad again this week minus the injuries. They’ll go fine

In the presser Kevvie made a lame attempt to make out the loss was not that bad saying that 4 or 5 of their tries were scored off kicks. He was suggesting that somehow those tries don't really count in the overall picture of our defensive structures.

That one statement right there highlights Kevvie's naivety in the game as what he was doing was highlighting the stark contrast in both teams' execution, attitude and game plan.

When we finished a set we had Reynolds kicking a bomb (much the same as what Milf would do) we had no one chasing the kick, no one contesting the kick ( I think I saw Cobbs make one attempt). The team's lack of enthusiasm to chase the kick and pressure the opposition was also very plain for all to see.

Contrast the Cows where almost every kick was contested, which threw our defence into disarray, and often led to a six again, or ultimately resulted in a try.

For Kevvie to try and write off the very reason they were made to look like a rabble as nothing worth considering is quite unforgivable. Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of as a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt Kevvie.

That loss was in a large part down to your poor coaching and you let the team down badly this weekend. Obviously learned nothing form the trial game.

Paix for Turpin is the only non-forced changes I'd make outside of flegler returning for james or jensen (that famous talk from james didn't seem to help last game so...).

But I would be having a chat to Selwyn about maybe re-finding form in qld cup sometime soon. I wouldn't say anything to staggs and niu about getting dropped to regather form yet (of course talk about performances), it would just add pressure. But i would next game if another shocker from niu and in 3 games if 3 shockers from staggs

It was a bit of a Seibold comment tbh

How is it that they didn't have the right attitude. Playing in great looking heritage jerseys, at home Lang Park, 3:00 pm on a Sunday arvo, against the Cowboys, with two out of two wins in the bank.
You have to wonder.

Don't forget our biggest home crowd for a number of years, plus Reynolds' first run out to a home crowd (which incidentally did nothing to give us any ref's advantage) that was quieter than a church mouse. I hate to say it but Brisbane fans are some of the worst in the world. We rarely voice our dis-satisfaction with the calls and do not much to support the team when they are struggling.

I get his point though. Our kick-chase was terrible, as was our linespeed and pressure on their kickers. Their halves were able to play in dinner suits because we let them. Kev is saying that that should not be the case moving forward. Kev knew exactly what he was going to rev them up about. I don't expect any drastic changes beyond injury cover.

I'd be telling Staggs and Cobbo to not worry about the big plays and go back to the basics - running hard, tacking hard, and chasing kicks hard. The resulting possession and fatigue in the opposition will allow the points to come later.

The only other thing I'd be doing would be bringing Walters in at the 25th minute mark.

Well, I drove all the way from the Sunny Coast to witness that drivel, drove all the way back in silence shaking my head. Went to the fish n chip shop to cheer me up....some 14 year old mullet head bagged us out (cowgirl fan). Got home, no lemon in the bag.

What a great day!

The lemons were all on the field. Might as well make juice.
