PRE-GAME Round 3 - Broncos vs Bulldogs

Its bittersweet.
Is it a win? yes.
Is it a win that changes anything? I think not.

We beat the Storm, Rabbits, Roosters or Panthers and this team would explode with confidence.
We beat the Dogs and its more of the same.
We’re the wooden spooners, we are the worst of the worst. A win against anyone is fantastic, we’re not in the same class as the storm or roosters, we’ve got no right to beat them.

It’s a fair enough and positive way of looking at it but there is a major downside that can’t be overlooked. These kids are getting murdered and beat up every week. They then get smashed in the media and by fans. That is not good for them. This stretch could further break some already potentially bent kids. Some may never recover from these last few years.
Yes, it can break the vulnerable BUT what remains cannot be broken. As they say, pressure to create diamonds, yes?

There's lots of sayings we are familiar with but I've come to realise the majority are based on real life experience. They exist because they're true.

Yeah I am not arguing the point about being forged in fire, I agree that the ones who survive will thrive once things are back in order but man, 2-4 seasons is a long time to be in the hottest of dumpster fires.

This is why our recruitment for next year is so important and vital that we get workmen in, guys who can at least show steel and while we are unlikely to be contenders, at least we can be competers.

Yes but here we differ on the timeframe. I don't see it taking years. I see it coming this season with the players we have. I like the new blood we've bought(brought in too!) in and KW has started the process of reinstalling the pride.

I see us competing every game this season and KW WILL drop the duds, it will definitely happen. If the number one dud keeps failing he will drop out and back to ISC and his million a season will make no difference to KW. Things are not as dire as it may appear at first glance and in my opinion, very few pundits really are looking hard, they're going 'wooden spooners, unimproved squad= shithouse' but the change in our squad is deeper than that. We're better than what most believe.

I do agree the side is better than it currently looks and will improve vastly once the duds as you say are dropped. Even so, the kids need help. I feel like we recruited ok in the backs but not in the forwards. Like you, I like Kennedy but after him, our forwards are non-existent. This is where we need to give the kids help.

I agree to a point, i think we have already shown an improvement to last year in effort, i have no doubt we let both those teams put 40+ points on us if it was last season but at the end of the day we need wins.

My fear this year is like you say, we compete every game with a 8-12 type point differential but still only win 3 or 4 games and pick up another spoon.

That’s actually quite an optimistic result. My fear is that the close losses take a mental toll and players start giving up like halfway through last season and we begin losing by 30+ again while experiencing a mass exodus of young promising players.

Both very reasonable fears but we cannot let those fears have life. In my opinion the ONLY thing that matters is the direction the team takes and it's my belief that regardless of the season's results the core that remains will be a foundation for future success. The guys that want to box on are the guys I personally want and who I think the club needs. I am optimistic about the future and our direction and I say again, we aren't far off.

Like I said earlier, any win is a bonus with this roster. Probably still the worst side on paper and avoiding the cellar again this year will take some doing. But, I'll be a little more optimistic and say they will chalk up 6-7 wins taking a couple big scalps along the way (certainly not Syd or Melb). Seems impossible when you've lost 13 straight but this side has a little more grit and there are slightly better days ahead. They need to sort out that god awful spine though.

Bulldog's winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will get rubbed out for a swinging arm on Nathan Cleary.

Watched the game again. So pissed off .... Can't understand why we would start giving up, or a "mass exodus of young promising players" when the very reason we are losing is that nearly everyone is playing like shit, particularly in defence. What do they expect? Going to another club and thereby miraculously finding form because of that, especially given that our new coach, our saviour, is doing his best to reinvigorate these self indulgent, piss weak surrenders when the going gets tough?

Those promising young and not so young players who just can't see that for example, not moving up and into an attacking player is the only way to stop him rather than sideways shuffles and arm grabs, or leaving the goal line defence to the bloke next to you while you contemplate whether it's worthwhile lending a hand? What other club would want them when they simply can't do the basics, and a shit coach is no longer a convenient excuse?

Perhaps the sense of entitlement hasn't quite yet been removed by Kevvie and it's about time he starts being a lot harder on this mob.

As for Milford, he seems to have lost all desire to play to his abilities. His defence against the Titans was pathetic, and he looks lost, or confused or bored or all of the above. Anyway, even as one of his most ardent admirers, I reckon at this rate, he won't be, or shouldn't be in this side for too much longer unless there is serious turnaround in his form.

Unless there is significant change this week, Bulldogs by 20

Hetherington has never played hooker in ISC- every game has been lock or 6.

Played hooker for QLD (and Paix halfback).

Isn’t hetherington a gun in defence?

Yeah he's very good. Matterson and Ryan love his defence. Think his hooker days appear over, no one wants to play him there.
