I may be crazy but I like the look of this team. I am not against giving TMM a crack at the back. Good to see CJ getting another start at prop, I said in the trials he is a no nonsense straight up and down prop and he is the type of player Melbourne turn into an Origin hero. Gamble getting the nod is another positive, his energy and never say die attitude is infectious so I hope he kills it Friday. The only selection I don't like is Kennedy but he is better than James and as others have pointed out TC may be in a bit of a second year syndrome downturn, He isn't providing the same type of energy he did last year at this stage. Getting a look at the side without Turpin is also something I want to see.

The contempt for Turpin amongst Brisbane fans just goes to show how little respect you get for defence. Good defenders are expendable. You have to score tries.

It's unsufficient for the job. That's the reality of it, you need crisp service and to be a double threat.

Any QCup hooker can come on and make 40-50 tackles a game.

James was brought to the club for experience and bench cover. Maybe he is feeling it a bit and Kev is playing the odds. Could be giving him a good 2 week rest with games against Sharks & Souths coming up.

Seems like Bulldogs fans hate their team. Lot of talk of our centres 'impregnating' theirs....

Edit: and they really hate their coach lol

They pretty much think what we all thought. Have Burton test Martin under the high balls.

They are right though, their centre pairings look uninspiring. But we all need to remember it's a G rated show.

Being a good defender is great. No team does anything in the comp unless you defend well.

But that isn’t why Turpin gets no respect, it’s because he literally has nothing else in his game. No team that aspires to finals football has a hooker that racks up zero run or kick metres.

His service is ordinary as most noted and even other team fans notice how slow he is getting the ball out to his runners. His lack of threat contributes to the pressure our halves are under and allow other teams to defensively target Reynolds in particular who has to shoulder all of the organising and attacking burden because Turpin literally offers nothing in that regard.

When you look at the weeks he has actually had a run or 2 they usually result in nothing more than a poor one out run, because he has no pace, size, or footwork to speak of. No apparent kicking game in any real form (short, long, chip kicks, grubbers or bombs) and no other tricks up his sleeve that might provide a spark of attacking creativity. He is a ‘stand an deliver’ hooker, whose delivery sucks…

That is not good enough for the NRL and neither is he at the moment.

I like Turpin, but I think it's more to do with the fact that every good hooker can do both. If Turpin's attack matched the level of his defence, he would be among the top hookers in the competition. Unfortunately, his attack is almost non-existent these days.
This is verbatim to what was said about Macca. Why replace Macca with another Macca when you could just keep Macca?

Like I said when we were talking about this last week, at least Macca has the odd 40/20 and ’show n go’ in his arsenal.

Turpin is incapable of producing even that, seemingly…
Tbh, It was the first time I’d watched the dragons play on the weekend and I thought Macca, hunt and McGuire all looked impressive in comparison to the broncos.. from memory, did we let go Macca and McGuire under seibold’s watch?

Yes, Mcguire to the Cowboys before season 2020 started and Macca to the Knights a bit of a way through season 2020.

McGuire was released from the remaining 3(!) years at the end of 2018 (when Bennett left) to the Cows and Macca was a few months into 2020

I agree. It is a bit of a sideways trade overall with very little gain. Some may argue it's actually even a backwards trade with no gain at all. I guess the only benefit out of moving on Macca has to do with the salary cap. The club probably thought they would be getting a similar output at a lesser price.

I wish the club would actually develop hookers instead of creating makeshift hookers. Guys like McCullough, Paix, Nikorima, and even Hunt were never hookers growing up. For such a specialist position, we haven't ever really given the position much priority.

I can understand why, too

Yeah. If I'm remembering right, Seibold put wanted McGuire on the bench when he first came in, and tried to replicate the 3 big prop style forwards thing he did at Souths with the Burgess brothers. At the time it possibly was the right move. But it was before Vlandys came along and sped the game up, which is seeing mobile props or traditional ball playing locks starting to make a comeback at the top clubs now.

McCullough though, I think needed the move at the time. He wasnt regressing, but he wasn't really progressing either.

To be fair, Cameron Smith and I think Robbie Farrah played halfback at junior level as well. So it wasn't like the idea was without merit at the time. They just committed to it longer term than some other teams did.

When Macca debuted, Lockyer and Peter Wallace were still our first choice halves pairing. And I think it was just after Ennis had left. It did make sense to put him there.

Before Smith and Bellamy revolutionized it, most hookers were just small defenders who mostly shovelled the ball to the halfback. But second rowers and even some props played a little bit more of dummy half back then. It wasn't as set a playmaking position as it is now. Anybody could go there.

Paix vs Marshall-King will be an interesting battle in this one though. They both have a point to prove for different reasons. Paix to knock off Turpin as the first choice, Marshall King to retain his starting position.

I have a good feeling about this game. No Niu and no Turpin, two of our shittiest players are finally out of the team. No more anchors holding us back!

Or set them up.
Turpin isn’t expendable due to his defence but a good 9 needs to be more balanced in attack. Needs to know when to dart out of dummy half and the ruck. Needs a good kicking game.

Same as it’s no good having a halfback that’s a great defender and **** all else either.

I think Turpin biggest weakness isn't his running game but his decision making. He seems to take an age to make up his mind on what he is going to do. Good hookers already have a plan before they pick up the ball. This hesitation and lack of planning is what removes the opportunity to go for a run out of dummy half.

And by planning I mean reading our attack, reading the defensive line and knowing where the ball means to go.

In short, Turpin isn't quick between the ears.

The only thing Macca and Jake have in common is being excellent defenders. Jake's service is infinitely faster, flatter and more targetted than Macca's. You must've forgotten Macca's feckless lobbing. It's true that occasionally Macca would pull a crafty run out of the bag, and Jake seems to have completely forgone that aspect of his game. Maybe he doesn't have it in him. Maybe it's how he's being coached. Maybe it's a combination of both. Probably the latter.

I'm not saying Jake isn't letting us down in attack, but comparing him to Macca is an undue slight.

But back to my original point, careful what you wish for in replacing him. I have seen no evidence this season that Billy or Cory have lifted the team when replacing Jake. If anything, we've missed Jake's defence and lost our lead.

I like the new look team and feel it's better balanced than past teams this year. Fullback is only a 33% chance of getting through without ****-ups.

If Haas plays his average game and Jensen plays an up tempo average game I think we'll get the early running from the ref. Gamble loves to just pick up and run hard first against any retreating defence so if Paix and our centres are awake we can bust them. Reno can ice the sets.

I will be flabbergasted if KW's heavy bench is well managed and I'm guessing it will be Flegler and Palasia on for Jensen and Riki followed by Kennedy for Haas at around 30 minutes. Walters most likely will relieve Paix but if it goes like I think it may KW might not want to change him before half time. We win this match.
