PRE-GAME [Round 8, 2022] Broncos vs Sharks

Game day.

I have to say this game is a genuine watershed moment for me.

It's the same 17 as last week (the first time since the beginning of the season).

We're up against a team that is in form, but we beat them last year when we were arguably in a weaker position and less developed under Kev's tutelage.

We're at home (a slight advantage, but our home support is soooo passive).

If we don't turn in a full 80 minute performance I'm not sure my patience will allow me to be as invested in the club as I have been since 1989.

Perhaps a rash statement to make, but that's where I'm at with the whole shitshow.

No more excuses Broncos just -DO IT.
We definitely seen a turning point last week after 50 mins, Reno obviously said something to the team he stood up and everyone followed his lead and we didn't take the foot off the throat, hoping that could be a turning point for the season.

Our spine last week was the first time playing together and probably even training together in those positions, so another week of training we can expect to see better understanding and structures.

Expecting Staggs to come out and have a day out he's got abit on the line.. a NSW jersey and bragging rights over Talakia, if that doesn't get him up for the game nothing else will.

I do hope our forward pack has been reading the press saying their soft and they cut some blokes in half, especially Payne. Kevvie should be printing it out and sticking it on their lockers before kick off.

Same, but Tyson has another year left. He's good depth, but with Ezra, Te Maire and Billy, probably surplus to needs. Another one who needs to shine tonight. But he's surprised us before.

Herbie, I'm also happy to let go if he's looking for elite centre money. But maybe the reason he hasn't signed with anyone else is the offers haven't been what his agent has been putting out to the press. I trust the Broncos to make the right decision there.

TMM is a real mystery. I guess we'll get more of an idea tonight. Tesi also has another year to run. I wonder if we can offload him to the Titans to replace Jamayne next season?

I don't know what to do with Billy. I guess he's behind Paix on the bench, but I'd rather have someone more of a livewire like a Segeyaro there. Same goes with Jake. If Cory takes the 9, then I want someone more nippy coming on to relieve him.
No idea why we re-signed Niu for 2 years

Because we started to win when he replaced Jamayne. He scored 8 tries from 16 games, with 3 assists. And he was getting effusive press. We were worried we'd lose him.

The iron was hot. His manager struck.
Never rated him

Why lie? It only makes things worse for you.

he still has proven himself yet though he's only played one game, give him a couple and sign him on the cheap if he keeps improving
The advantage their existing club has over competing clubs is their coaches should have a fair idea of the relative worth of these players. Especially in the case of someone like Te Maire Martin, who's had **** all game time. All the other clubs have seen is his one game last week.

If you let them play enough games to show this to the rest of the competition, you'll end up having to pay them more against a backdrop of competing offers.

Fair enough they need to see them under real world conditions against teams managed by other coachs to get an idea of their spatial awareness under pressure, but really, if Te Maire is what we think he might be, we need to lock him down before the hype.

Elite players who can double as fullback or five-eighth are thin on the ground at bargain prices.

Your patience will be required for a little longer yet as there are still many more bleak nights ahead. I realise many fans are hoping that the 20 minute burst against an injury and COVID hit cellar dwellar will be season turning but it won't be or anything even close.

The Broncos don't have the roster to make any noise this year and one can only hope that current and future management can build the squad into something formidable in the coming years. When the roster doesn't contain plodders such as James, Lee, Gamble, Jensen, Oates, Turpin, Riki and many more, then we will see an upsurge in Bronco fortunes.

Hang in there, my friend because tonight's contest won't be close in the end. The Broncos might make it interesting for a stage until they grow tired or they **** up. Then as per usual, they will raise their hands in the air as Cronulla runs away with it. Sharks by 16.

One thing that is supporting us is that playing at home Suncorp we have an decent win % and hopefully that gets us over the line tonight.

Surely if we are re-signing TMM it is for a pittance. We have taken a risk on him and owe him nothing. It is surely a 1 year deal at minimum wage at this point. Let's PLEASE not do another Lodge here.

It's not about owing him something, it's about him potentially being a great buy. From the small amount we saw of him he already looked better than anyone we currently have at 6. And that's without even mentioning he beat Herbie and Selwyn to fullback.

So what happens if he sucks tonight? We should not be re-signing anyone on big/inflated on worth money after one game. A one year deal allows us to keep him but also provides him incentive to back up. We can always re-address if he keeps his form up and then replace a one year deal with an upgraded two year one. My point is, if he ends up being on minimum wage and playing like a 3-400k or more player, that's good business.

The issue with Staggs when he's in that kind of mood is that he starts to overplay his hand looking for the glory play.

One of Staggs' go to plays is getting on the outside of his man... if Talakai is able to shepherd him to the sideline he could find himself running out of room constantly and putting the team under pressure.

Cobbo doesnt always go back on Staggs inside either.

I feel sharks defence will look to slide on Staggs and push him to the outside... if that's the case then Staggs needs to recognise that and go for the step and target the inside shoulder of Talakai, or look to play Cobbo back inside on unders line.

It might be a good insight into Staggs game awareness and what his opposite is trying to do against him.

Staggs go to for defence at the moment is showing them the sideline and then backing his speed to catch up and tackle them. That might be an ok approach for Talakai as Staggs has the speed advantage.

If he's looking to dominate him he might come up and in to try and take him out as he's getting the ball... I think that play is less effective against him. He's quite nimble for a big centre and he showed some quick passing skills last week to get it to the winger.

I can't see the conversation happening but TMM doesn't deserve to be re-signed after one good game. Let him prove himself for a few more weeks/months. We still need to focus on a fullback and a hooker and as good as he was at the back his future with us would be in the number 6 jersey.

Staggs needs to focus on getting in Talakai's face tonight, not giving him any room to move. We should go to Herbie a lot at the beginning as well, because Staggs will overplay his hand. Let him get confident first and then go to him. Definitely nervous about this game.

I dont think we signed him on a big deal though... maybe $250k for 2yrs, which is not bad for a potentially depth fullback, had Cobbo made the transition to fullback fulltime.

When we signed Tesi I think Broncos were basically his last option for a starting spot, unless he wanted to move as a depth option.

Campbell had come good for titans, so that was out. Dolphins were a year away, so he needed to be playing first grade somewhere and then most other teams were sorted for starting fullback, including a number of re-signings, like Gutho, etc.

I dont think he had too many options and we didn't exactly prioritize his re-signing either... probably because of the number of times he had been flippant about his desire to play for Broncos ie. the rumours of moving to the titans after Fifita signed with them.

Who said anything about signing him on big money?
