PRE-GAME [Round 8, 2022] Broncos vs Sharks

Did you watch their game, and then ours, this weekend?

I did. Sharks were great in the opening 40, average in the second. We were terrible in the first 40, great in the second. Staggs is also light years ahead of The Pug for Manly, so that will also help. I'm not saying we will win or even get smashed but the Sharks weren't an 80 minute team this week either.

I missed the Talakai vs staggs talk but Talakai was absolutely gassed after 35 on Thursday night and was up against Harper. Kotoni has destroyed Momirovski and Tago in consecutive weeks in both attack and defence.
I also think Kotoni has the agility and speed advantage over him and the power game I’d say about even.
Going to be a good battle but I’m not really worried about Talakai tbh. More so Hynes and Kennedy

Payne Haas:
“I think it’s just a grade-one AC joint injury. I will get it looked at by the physios and see what happens. It felt better when I got back out there. I had some needles after coming off and my shoulder felt better when I ran out there. I’m pretty happy I was able to get through the game. I did what I had to do. I kept it simple, ran hard and made my tackles.”
“I was a bit gutted to get suspended. I felt bad for the boys, I felt I let down the whole team and the coaches and the fans. I wanted to make it up to them and it was good to get the win with the boys. I did stuff up a bit, but I felt like I wasn’t worthy of getting suspended. I felt like I didn’t do too much wrong, but we’re in the public eye and I can’t be doing that kind of stuff. I have to handle those sorts of situations better. I have learnt my lesson there.”

I hear you, but therein lies the problem. Sharkies got to 32 unanswered points against a decent Manly side that will be playing finals this year. We start like we did this week and they will rack up enough points in the first half they could run out half a team in the second and we still wouldn't score enough points to take it off them.

If we start strong and play like we did against Roosters and the Riff, then an upset is certainly on the cards - particularly if they underestimate us. The Tigpies/Eels game last week should have sounded enough of a warning to the rest of the comp that they can't take any team lightly, and we reinforced that with our last half hour tonight.

I'd love to see us stick it to them, I really would. I hope we do.

I've been thinking about that one, and I can't see how Kevvie can drop him. It might mark the end of Billy's career as a first grader, and Kevvie can't want that. He won't take that decision lightly.

Kevvie and Billy will have a plan. The ideal will be to position Billy as the long term 5/8th. Nothing wrong with that ambition. The problem is the pair of them are colluding. That's fine when it's Nathan Cleary and he's the best player in the game. But when the side immediately kicks into gear when your son is off the field, holy **** you have a conflict of interest.

I can't see Kevvie sending him back to the Cup to work on something. Like what, exactly? And when would he bring him back?

So in answer to your question, no, Billy won't retain his starting spot at 9. But he will retain a place, either at 6 or 14. If Turpin returns, my prediction is he will take 9, Paix 14 and Billy 6. If Jake doesn't, then maybe Kevvie will go with his original plan of Paix 9, Billy 14 and, I guess, Tyson at 6.

I was largely unimpressed with Tyson last night but he probably didn't do enough wrong to drop him outright. It looks like Selwyn will stay on the wing (the right decision, I think), so TMM will keep fullback. If Kevvie had another fullback up his sleeve, TMM would clearly be a superior 5/8th than any of his choices this season.

We do have a few more cards to play (Mariner, Mam, Hoeter. Pereira, Lee etc) and we get to see them tomorrow in the Seagulls v Magpies match.

Loving what I'm seeing from Oates in the last few games. Is he a possible candidate for fullback if TMM went to 5/8th?

If Mam doesn't sharpen up and find some form, Gray will go past him. Gray 2022 is better than Mam 2021.

He might need to get some Hostplus Cup games under his belt first. When's that likely to be?

I am not suggesting you pick Gray now but he's in exactly the same spot Mam was 12 months ago- playing MM and he's doing it better. If he gets promoted to ISC after the Grand Final next week on both current form I would be confident Gray would outshine Mam at the moment- better pass, vision and defence. I know Gray hasn't done it against men yet but that's why I compared 21 to 22 form.

More an indication where I think Mam is at form wise at the moment.

I would say Gray will play some Colts after next week and see where he is for a few weeks there.

I just re-watched the game and Walters wasn't as bad as first thought. He was "unlucky" to get penalised/6 again for 2/3 of them, and his passes hit the spot, he just made a few poor decisions with where and when to pass (one hospital pass and one went away from a short side play where we had the numbers). His defence was ok but he didn't rush up enough like Turpin does.
He just needs to be told pass it to reynolds when he asks everytime, run it or pass it to a forward. He tried to get too smart and tricky and with him not being a dummy half they are inevitably the wrong decision most of the time. His running game is still good, his defence is solid and his passes are OK out of dummy half so he isn't a complete lost cause.
Having said that, paix had his best game for us last night. Surprised me with his ability to make the right decision. Certainly refreshing, he seems footy smart. Get his cardio up and give him 80 mins. But I implore kev W to LET HIM build up his fitness in 1st grade. Give him a few mins more every week or 2.

Am I missing something with Talaki? Heard the commentators/reporters rave on like it was a Meninga+johns+lockyer performance in that opening 40 mins so I watched the highlights...

Staggs was more devastating 2 weeks ago lol. Every single try or try assist harper was LITERALLY running backwards ALREADY.it was shocking defence. Talaki didn't need to brush anyone off, use amazing footwork, throw magical passes (even the offload like hus try assist you see a few times a round). Cobbo showed more skill in the last 20 mins the other night. I get he is a big strong and fast human but if that's his best performance and that's what gives him immortal status in the eyes of the nrl media then **** me staggs better clean his ass bcos it's about to be kissed by the media

Look at this try. Seriously. Staggs, what? This is what a centre looks like. They can draw their man, and pass like this. Not only can they do it, they make it their signature. They have to get the ball away. Like it's their life mission. Hogsworth, take note.

And Cobbo, **** me drunk, that pickup and that kick (not the first time he's pulled that off) this is the kid who was spilling his lollies all over the floor a couple of weeks ago. He's now the best winger we've had since Corey Oates. This is some elite shit we have going on over on the right hand side.

And, Rhys Kennedy, take a bow. The bloke is a football God. And I'm not even religious.

Not sure why people want TMM at 6, he played good at 1 and us fixing 1 is far more important then 6 especially when we have a really good 7.

In the Modern game the fullback is just a more important position then the secondary half, especially since the new rules.

like i mentioned earlier not talking next week but later inthe season or next he could be an option, plus it's been 1 game so early days

I think we keep Billy at 9 again or move him to 6. He’s better than Gamble and as frantic as he was last night, I think if he simplifies his game he’ll still be a better hooker than Turpin, who is literally just a tackling machine. He’s had one bad game at hooker. Turpins had 3 yrs of that. I’d give Billy another shot to redeem himself. Kid’s got a lot more potential than Turpin, who we’ve seen hit his potential already and it sucks lol I also think Billy’s looked great when coming off the bench at hooker too but Paix looks poor when starting at hooker like he did in the trial. He needs a tired defence
Billy is quickly approaching 30. I don’t think he has any surprises in him as far as ability goes.

Not much difference between what a modern NRL 5/8th and fullback require to nail down their jobs...id keep TMM at the 1 no probs....he can handle it based on last night...

Are we about to see what we missed out with Hynes next week?

TPJ was the sole reason all of that happened, it was a lazy effort to put pressure on a key player.

Any argument for Shepard re Reynolds and Riki?

Big Kennedy channeled his inner Albert Kelly with that grab and spin.

Are you saying this because you’re on the hype train or you genuinely believe Jye Gray could towel up in q-cup RIGHT NOW
