Round 8 - Broncos vs. Rabbitohs - Pre-Game discussion

Eager to see how Hunt goes tonight, he was excellent last week. Hopefully his kicking game comes along with a new halves partner (preferably one that can take on some of the kicking duties).

It's so hilarious being part of this forum. We have almost all the forum saying they'd rather "...anyone else but Hoffman at 5/8..." now there's strong mail that Hodges will be 5/8 and we get things like, "...he's legs won't hold up...", "...great chance to blood a youngster..." It seems we are never happy here.

Can't speak for everyone else, but for me it's a case of no matter how well Hodges plays tonight (if he does in fact play 5/8th) he'll be back in the centres when Hoffman gets back. That may not be the case with someone else.

True, though I would prefer Hodges in the halves over Hoffman. Not that it's anywhere close to an ideal option.

It's pretty funny isn't it. I was thinking the same think earlier. Never happy

unfortunately since we put all our eggs in the Milford for 2014 basket we don't have an ideal option ATM.

I know many are calling for Kodi Nikorama to replace Hoffman at 5/8. but IMO not much will change, because he certainly won't add a passing game to the 5/8 position for us.

you only had to watch the nines to realise that he never actually set anyone else up. it was always either running the ball himself (similar to what Hoffman does) or kicking a little grubber for himself. and that shows me that he isn't ready to be an NRL 5/8.

being an NRL 5/8 means being able to set up your outside backs through either a kicking or passing game (and K.Nikorama hasn't shown he is capable of that yet.) and I think if you are only going to select a running 5/8 then Hoffman is a better choice because he has a better running game than Nikorama.

I think with a few more games in the ISC Duncan Paia'Aua may be an option, but i'm not sure he is quite there yet

Well, Kodi did throw that awesome pass to Barba against Canterbury in the 9s and was unlucky that Maranta wasn't in the vicinity to collect the cut-out against the Warriors in the trial, but if the knock against Hoffman is that he's too much of an individual, than I fail to see how Kodi fixes that issue.

Most halves are becoming individualistic, just not to Hoffman's extremes. Hodges is individualistic too, but he can at times see that passing is the better option.

I really want a halves with a footy brain.

Hodges may look to pass but there are times where he'll trudge off, come up with a crappy run and out of frustration throw a silly pass out of frustration.

For me, that's far worse than simply taking the tackle.

Not when your talking extremes and for Hoffman his well and truly beyond just taking the odd tackle for when the need arises to that of becoming far too predictable with the ball in hand, much the same as McCullough had that tendency to always attack the tryline from dummy half. Hodges can make the odd silly mistake sure, but I'd trust him to be more selective for when he runs and when he passes then Hoffman ever could.

When it comes to makeshift players, I'd rather one who's just happy to do a job than one who's going to over-extend themselves and put others under pressure.

But I'm merely arguing hypothetical which is really neither here nor there.

Can't wait to get out to the game, the ANZAC celebration should be fantastic, will be nice to see the NYC boys and the game should be a beauty.

I should have made the effort to get to this game.

Pete, can you keep us updated on NYC scores?

You might have to rely on somebody like GC to keep you posted mate, I'm terrible with my Android but I'll try and give my impressions on full-time.

Anyways, off to catch the bus.

Up them mighty Broncos!
