It’s amazing we are so high up there when some games all we seem to do is hand the ball over cheaply in our own half over and over and over again
Well if you are looking for a negative stat for us to improve ... missed tackles... although I think a lot of this would have been from our warriors and cowboys games.

Interesting how so many good teams are high on missed tackles. I wonder if defensive trends are favouring a structure that results missed tackles but makes up for it elsewhere - eg rushing up to shut down plays and backing the goal line defence.

Perhaps it has something to do with not giving away 6 agains because the time in possession stat that @BroncsFan posted seems to heavily correlate with success.

Maybe not making any attempt at a tackle (or not being near enough to attempt one) also makes you look good with these stats.

Could be similar to the old Bhunt defensive stats.

I always thought he was a reasonable defender, but he had one of the highest missed tackle counts going... typically he would go up high and sometimes be bounced off by the second rower, but it would take effort to get rid of him by the attacker and the support would come in and finish them off.

Could be definitely have something to do with that.

It also curious that we have such high completion rates but such low time in possession. Must be due to the 6 agains and defensive penalties rather than handling errors.

I just want us to recognize just how big this game is and lift for it.

It sounds like they will. It sounds like the attitude has been really good, but I've been fooled before. You won't have to worry about Reynolds. It's everyone else.

For people wondering why aren't the odds closer etc, mainly due to this team can get themselves up to play at Suncorp every week (even when we won the spoon we were hardly embarrassed much at Suncorp) but usually we don't travel well and don't have a good record in Sydney apart from the dogs win back in round 2 and the roosters win at the SCG last year, every time something goes against us they put their heads down and end up getting flogged by 13+. I hope we do turn up and beat Souths as they have been average and were lucky to even win last week if it wasn't for the send off.

Missed tackles only really matter if the breaks they allow, lead directly to points. Relying upon a really strong scramble seems to be the current trend. Linespeed. defensive patterns etc, seem not to matter so much to some of the better teams at present, so long as they stop the ball from crossing the line or hold it up if it does.

Perhaps defensive coaches have realised with the size, strength and speed of modern players, tackle breaks and line breaks will regularly occur in games, no matter how much you try to lock down your defence and with the 6 again rule it has gotten worse. So rather than try and stop what can’t be stopped anyway, they are concentrating on stopping the break after it happens, through good scramble options?

Funny how they have dried up the last few games with Tesi injured. Cobbo's handling has also come on a lot, he was a big culprit 3 or 4 weeks ago.

Capewell is apparently out this week because he hurt his neck drying himself with a towel.

I think it's bullshit, but really bizarre if true.
My dad did this when I was really young. Was drying his hair and the towel somehow gripped his head and moved the wrong way. Pretty dumb but it definitely happens.

It's logical that errors and completion rate have a direct correlation.

But it is very interesting that we have a pretty excellent completion rate, yet have had poor possession rates. It does speak very much of being ripped apart by penalties and 6-agains. And the fact that if we have enough possession, our completion rates are high enough that we should be able to score points.

Also, teams 1, 2, 3 & 5 on the ladder have the top 4 possession percentages. Backs up the above as well - those teams are enjoying far more opportunities. It would be interesting to see what of those are afforded to opposition errors, or, of course, the opposition being penalised more, but we'd need to look at the game-by-game stats for that (and even then, penalty counts are often rigged by the square-ups towards the end of the game).

We've conceded the second lowest amount of penalties for the year as well... which also doesnt explain why the possession rate against us is so bad.

The only thing not recorded in the NRL stats is 6 agains... that's where the problem may lie.

Also doesnt have a stat for penalties awarded ie. we may have a low penalties conceded stat but that doesnt necessarily mean we're winning the penalty count every week.

I would also like to see an errors forced stat to give an idea if our defense is causing turnovers during play.

My guess is 6 agains, especially late in tackle counts, and repeat sets via forced drop out.
