PRE-GAME Round 9 - Broncos vs Bulldogs

No it doesn’t it weakens our edge because of his inability to tackle the big boys running and targeting him

Lol apposed to him playing hooker where his primary role is to tackle the biggest guys on the field....! Your logic doesn’t make sense mate

How is Dargan going in Q cup?

I know it’ll never happen but I wouldn’t mind seeing;

6. Milf
7. Dargan
9. Bird
14. Niko

You talking about the stints where everyone was terrible probably expect for TPJ and Lodge...? Where the team had atrocious ball handling skills and the forwards didn’t go forward and the halves had little to no chance of doing anything...? The best game we have played all year was against the cowboys. We actually looked dangerous and who was playing 7 that game? It wasn’t bird!

Give me Nikorima any day at 7. There is other benefits to him playing 7 too! It strengthens our edge and we are more dangerous with bird at centre then tommy!

Who was playing 7 against the Dragons, the Tigers, the Titans, the Knights?

Then suddenly, we move Bird into the halves and we take down one of the ladder leaders.

Who was playing 7 against the Dragons, the Tigers, the Titans, the Knights?

What is with your agenda?

The dragons not one single player played to anywhere near their potential. We hardly had any ball and when we did somebody dropped it. We got flogged. Don’t blame Nikorima for that!

The tigers game we won so I don’t see your point there.

The titans once again wasn’t the fault of the halves. The titans scored two tries in the first 5 or 6mins if I recall correctly. We didn’t show up and we got beaten. That certainly wasn’t the fault of the halves!

The knights I didn’t watch so I can’t comment on that game all though I’m sure you blame Nikorima for that mess to.

What I do know is our attack looks better when Nikorima is playing halfback but that’s just my opinion. We look dangerous! Bird looks like a second lock who is trying to ball play. That’s ok if you have a Thurston, Lockyer, Cronk or johns playing halfback. We don’t. We have Milford who isn’t anywhere near that level.

I hope I’m proven wrong and bird settles into the position but unfortuanlty I just don’t think it’s the right position for him.

Like I said in the other thread, I think both Bird and Nikorima are stop gap halves until we find a real one. I don't think we'll be beating the Storm or maybe a couple of other sides with Milford running the show in the finals.

That said, between the two, I'd prefer Bird for now. He seems wasted at centre, I prefer TPJ at lock, Boyd has the fullback gig booked until he retires...and Bird does straighten the attack when he actually gets his hands on the ball I guess.

Meanwhile, Kodi has played his best football at hooker when coming off the bench. We made the grand final partially thanks to his impact there. I like him there this year. He can create something from nothing, which is what our attack has been relying on like more than half the time this year.

A hooker will very rarely have to make a one-on-one tackle as their will always be numbers in the tackle (or should be). Probably be easier to defend there as he will always have help and wouldn't get isolated as easily as he does out on the fringes.

I don’t understand where this concern about Nikorima’s defence is coming from? I haven’t seen anything to suggest that he is a bad defender, small yes but everytime I’ve watch him he puts his body on the line!

I don’t buy into the he would get isolated more defending as a half. You can’t tell me that he is a liability defending three in but your happy for him to play hooker and defend set after set up through the middle.

Anyway my opinion is obviously completely different to a lot of people’s but I will say this again “in my opinion” (please nobody get their nickers in a twist) we are a far more dangerous side with Nikorima playing 7. This means bird has to play left centre.

Bird playing in the halves puts to much pressure on Milford at the back end of the sets. This may sound stupid but if Milford gets tackled on the 5th tackle who’s kicking the ball? Not bird from what I’ve seen. Boyd? A forward? It reminds me of Cartwright at the titans. Just a lock pretending to be a half.

Are you basing that on the handful of games when he played half last year....?

We've seen nothing this year.

With what we are paying him Bird at center makes absolutely no sense. The bloke hates playing there and doesn't want to play there for a start. Plus the way we play, he doesn't really offer any more than our other options at center anyway. I'd actually say if Kahu's body would hold up to the job he would make a far better center than bird.

I was thinking lock for Bird....but TPJ is really looking likely. I agree he isn't much of a centre. He needs to get his hands on the ball a lot more than that.

That said......he really is playing at the moment with zero confidence. I hope like **** in the next couple weeks he does something, one thing special.... that will get him flying high again.

I’m basing it on the only game that I’ve enjoyed watching this year where we actually looked like we had some type of structure and knew what we were trying to do and that was the cowboys game. Let’s face it the warriors and Souths wins were individual brilliance that got us there. There was no structure what so ever. The Souths game was hard to watch especially the first half.

Nikorimas first or second touch against the storm led to a try. He got the ball as a half and threw a great cutout ball for a try. We won’t see that from bird!

See this concerns me. People are now deciding where a player should play based on what he is being paid? It shouldn’t work like that and I don’t care if he doesn’t want to play at centre. He plays where he is told to play! He isn’t the coach! McGuire and TPJ are miles in front of him in the lock department to IMO so it’s a big no for that position too!

I hope I’m wrong and I’m happy to be proven wrong but I think he is a bad signing for us!

Fucken oath it was......but we dropped the ball 8 times and gave away stupid penalties. Would KNik playing half, have prevented that...?

We share common ground on this. It's bullshit just how many comments about a player will start or end with ......"for the amount he is getting paid"

WB and many others with close and intimate knowledge think Bird's very talented and I too have watched him closely ever since he made his debut. He has a good kicking and passing game and is a ferocious defender. He is also both ultra competitive and a confidence player. I'm prepared to bet he will become a real asset.
