OFFICIAL Rugby League World Cup Discussion

WTF. The video ref calls the player directly to the right of the kicker off-side, he’s within the 10 when the players go up to contest it, and goes on to score, and it’s called a try?

I don’t care if PNG don’t have the resources themselves to sustain an NRL team. Looking at what they put in to these games it simply has to happen. They’re still raw but they’re at a whole new level to where they were pre-ISC.

If the NRL are happy to bail out teams like the Gold Coast, which no one gives a **** about (including those that live there), they can certainly invest in PNG.

What do they need? They already have a stadium. They already have a team and they can follow the prototype of some NSW Cup teams by having both a first grade and second grade team. It would really only be the hurdle of convincing non-PNG players and coaching staff to move over there. But with the current contract values of NRL players, coupled with the cost of living over there, they certainly won’t be doing it tough. Even for those players with young families I’m sure the NRL can grant them some additional funds for support networks that aren’t included in the Operations cap.
Thank you! My thoughts also

What happened to Scotland and Wales? They were playing Four Nations not long ago and putting in decent showings - hell, Scotland drew with New Zealand last time.

This tournament... what a mess.

I thought of this system the other day. I think it works better, less lambs to the slaughter and gives the minnows at least one semi berth, albeit cutting one nation. Based on results so far, that's Wales, although Scotland + USA are giving them a good run.

Pool A
Aus
NZ
Eng

Pool B aka 'the islanders'
PNG
Fiji
Samoa
Tonga

Pool C
Italy
Lebanon
Ireland

Pool D
USA
France
Scotland

Note: Pool C and D can be made up of whoever is the strongest of the tier 3 nations.

Pool A play each other and all go through, that's 3/8 semi finalists. Top 3 of Pool B go through after their pool matches, 6/8. Then you have the top teams in C + D fill the last two spots. If they don't want to give two spots to tier 3's then everyone in pools A+B go through. They can all get mixed up anyway if they want, especially if all 7 go through.

Gives everyone relative competition, sets up some quality semi-finals, and stops the 70+ scorelines we're seeing. I feel it degrades both the competition and related stats/records

Edit: some may ask the point of pools A+B playing at all if they all go through but all teams need gametime, especially as it's post-season and they don't play together often. Plus they need to decide pool positions ie who's playing in which semi against who

They are still working on structured pathways, league wasn't in schools. The Hunters live together away from home all season and send money home. They're still fixing all that for the first time ever. The Governing body wasted millions for years.

Another problem- The Hunters aren't producing NRL players, It's a mystery to me why no one takes them. They have made the finals three of their four seasons Marum has won coach of the year, Israel player of the year, Lo scored 24 tries in 2014- 100 kg winger who is scoring tries in the WC now pushing blokes away- no one comes near them.

They have a nice ground and all games are on free to air they win premierships. They've certainly been a success story thanks to the ISC and the QRL.

But they're not producing NRL standard players yet.

That’ll change now. This WC is the best exposure they’ve had since entering the ISC. That winger would have to be odds-on to get a pre-season with an NRL club, and all it will take is one success story for the progression to start.

You mean someone like Adrian Lam?

Clubs find 15 year old players in remote New Zealand towns, why do PNG players who are on tv every week need the World Cup?

There was talk of Garry Lo signing with an NRL team last time he played in an international game and he went and signed with a shitty 2nd string English club.

From the current crop I mean.

Like I commented elsewhere, they play a very raw brand of football that as an overall team style would not translate well to the NRL. Individually though some seem to have transcended that. Just my guess.

He recently signed a 2 year contract with Castleford Tigers in the English Super League.

But will probably still be languishing in the lower grades for the Sheffield Eagles.

The English winger found not guilty of biting Farah. Wobbie is going to throw a fucking fit. Can’t wait.

Might head over to LU to read up on how it's all Wayne Bennett's fault
