Sack Griffin/New Coach Discussion

Given his forwards gave him virtually nothing to work with, I thought he showed some very nice touches, especially given he hasn't been playing in that role for the past couple of seasons.

Lockyer wasn't an automatic success at 5/8 either. It took him a couple of years to really find his groove in that role, after moving from fullback. I think Milford will be just fine in the role, assuming we keep him...

Gee (gotta stop using that expression) that logic applies equally to Hoffman?

Also, wouldn't it be hilarious if Hannant makes the Origin squad, and Kennedy makes 3 metres instead of 2 before being sat on his arse.

Re: Round 9 - Broncos vs Cowboys Pre-game discussion

Time running out for Griffin | NRL | Zero Tackle

Look at the comments of the excuses for griffin.

Everyone forgets the fact that if we sacked him Kearney would most likely take over as caretaker coach and it would give him a chance to press for a fulltime coaching position here. We are playing above expectations and Griffin has managed the signature of Milford and was able to recruit Barba (who has a big profile), Vidot who has been a success and finally has given Ben Hunt a permanent halfback position and it's paying off for him. He is doing some good for us atm.

Brisbane were going backwards before Hannant stood up and took the massive Souths forward pack on. How long do we have to put up with Griffin? Seriously!

Some good for us? Perhaps... But that Good is useless if we finish out of the 8 every year?

How many caretaker coaches actually ended up being fulltime coaches in the last 10 or so years?
Caretaker coach is pretty much a curse, so we might end up getting rid of Kearney too.

Good.

I'm far from Hooks biggest fan and would love to see him gone but I'm genuinely curious what better options are available. From what I understand Walters has shown to be pretty average.

The fact people are mentioning Sheens is silly. Does everyone forget his last few seasons at the Tigers? Or that he nearly lost to a substandard NZ (coached by one of the worst coaches in the game) with what would have to be close to one of the best Aus teams to take thr field?

Kearny at head coach is a joke right? I don't even want him as defence coach.

How good has Bennett's teams been doing since his last GF? And We'd have to replace him in like 2 years anyway. Not to mention his lost puppy Darius would be a walk in at fullback. No thanks.

The only person I'd straight Griffen for would be Macguire or maybe Neil Henry. If Hook misses the top 8 this year (Ill be surprised if we miss out this year) he should be punted and we should take a risk on a new coach if not I'm fine to hang on to him until a sure thing becomes available.

1. If Kearney got the gig and we played well for the remainder of the season and looked a different side, you'd be willing to take a punt on him - considering other coaches struggled to get the best out of Parra after him shows maybe it wasn't entirely his fault (IE, the culture absolutely stank).

In no way am I suggesting we should hire Kearney, but the reality is - if he got the short term gig and did well, he'd be worth a punt. If he got the short term gig and sucked, is it going to be much worse than we've been given for 2 1/2 seasons now? Further to that, if that did occur, then he'd have no chance of getting the full time gig and would probably be removed from the staff entirely. Win/win?

2. We aren't playing above expectations, not at least as far as the board is concerned because there have been numerous references to the side being a top 4 side - whether as a fan you believe that or not, if that is the expectation either the board or the coach has benchmarked and we aren't there, then he's falling short of expectations.

3. Barba fell into our lap - he wanted to move to Qld and the Titans had no cap space. Please don't delude yourself into thinking we pulled off a coup by signing him under the noses of a dozen clubs.

4. Vidot was always a promising player, you obviously don't remember his performances in the u20's and for the Raiders during his first couple of seasons where he was just about neck and neck with JYY as the next winger for Qld. He went off the tracks at the Raiders (who hasn't?) and didn't get much of a gig for St George to re-establish himself. Yes he's playing well but Griffin hasn't woven any magic here, he's just given him a chance to prove himself and Vidot has done the rest.

5. So what? He's a HB. We're surely not giving credit to a coach for playing people in their proper positions, are we? What's next? We gonna give him props for making sure the water bottles are filled to the brim?

In all honesty I don't think we're doing too badly this year, but I don't rate Griffin as a coach and think he'll be gone by end of season at the latest. Some of the stuff we're giving him props for though is, well, an indictment of how far we've fallen and what we're willing to give credit/praise for.

Sheens has a 23/24 win rate with the Australian team, not really a good point to argue against him.

My grandma could have coached the Australian team to a 23/24 win rate..

People are a bit harsh on Sheens tbh, his rep coaching record is immaculate, his club coaching record is.. not great, but to be fair he's coached a couple of sides with very poor rosters (84-87 Panthers & 97-01 Cowboys), his overall records at the Raiders & Tigers are actually pretty good, with that being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him back in the NRL coaching a talented team.

Immaculate.....??

He lost us the 4 nations a few years ago on the back of fucked up team selections. ie; I want to fit as many Tigers players into the team as possible.

Think about this last line the next time you think Kearney would do an OK job as stand in coach.

Stephen Kearney isn't a coach's arsehole.

Don't get me wrong, sheens was a great coach. He appears to be a bit past it though.

Like I said, in no way am I purporting my support for him as coach.

However, the chances are even if he was stand in coach if griffin got the sack mid season, it'd be unlikely he would remain it come the start of the new one.

I'd be willing to take that chance on the basis that it'd appear as if we're actively doing something.

Insanity doing the same things etc.

Frying pan into the fire ....etc etc etc

We're already in the fire mate.

We might not be burnt to a crisp just yet but we're already in it, and if gets much worse there's not much difference between well done and meteorite.

The 2010 four nations loss was the only loss he has as Australian coach.. I'd say that's reasonably immaculate, and to be fair from memory he was forced to pick 1-2 of those West Tigers players because of injury, I'm pretty sure Lote Tuqiri was a last minute addition.
