Mal can't even get the QLD side right...or seemingly even motivate them much at all these days.

In many ways, he's a bit like Bennett of old, surrounded by a galaxy of stars (so to speak), which makes any coach's job a lot easier, especially with established combinations, like the Storm 1,7 and 9 ... and Inglis

Still, he certainly has to use an arsenal of rockets to change the appalling way they played in game 1.

We will soon see

The other thing to remember is there's no salary cap for coaches so there's no reason we can't spend big on coaches/quality support staff.

If the Broncos do decide to move on from Griffin, they absolutely must go for an experienced coach. I think the lessons the club will learn from the Henjack/Griffin era is that you can have a young squad and a young coach but not both at the same time. How about someone like Brian Smith? His record in Grand Finals isn't that flash but he has shown he can build a squad of players and get them to the big day.

Brian Smith is one of the best rebuilding coaches, but the problem is you really have to get rid of him after a couple of years, because other than rebuilding, he sucks at everything else. I don't think we are at the rebuilding stage though, we just need a few quality players.

I'm going to re-iterate my support for Ackland. The Warriors junior team have had some great success and I'm sure he could do similar things with our youngsters, and who knows, maybe bring over some of his talented crop too.

Henjak by all accounts was a good tactician but didn't have the temperament to manage the players, I'd say Griffin is the opposite but being too chummy with the players can be a problem too.

One of the biggest lessons learnt and the one that has burnt us the most was that a CEO (Bruno) should give a coach (Bellamy) complete autonomy.

Re: New coach

Article today about this in the paper ... he is gonna cost best part of a million a year ... if we made him captain/coach perhaps a lot less is on the cap ... hmmmm

Oink !

I'm not sure if you are serious about captain/coach. This is the NRL not a fucking reserve grade bush competition.

I haven't really seen that much coaching acumen from Ackland. The gameplan was basically run over all the skinny kids - he wouldn't have that benefit in the NRL. Not too completely write him off because clearly I haven't gone and watched every single game he's coached but I'm not sold on him - yet.

I could really go into detail on this subject because I find it fascinating but I don't rate Smith as a rebuilder. He fancies himself a bit like McGuyver and sure he could have the odd successful season with a team of rubberbands but it's never going to win a premiership and it's only a matter of time before it folds.

Mal Meninga is being considered to take on the job of coaching the Brisbane Broncos in 2014.
The most successful coach in State of Origin history is also on the radar of the North Queensland Cowboys. It’s no secret both Neil Henry and Anthony Griffin are under enormous severe pressure. Meninga struggled as head coach of the Canberra Raiders a few years back but has grown in maturity since and his Origin record speaks for itself.
“If I’m going to do something, the time has to be now,” Meninga said recently of his coaching ambitions. I have been told a high-ranking Broncos official sounded Meninga out a fortnight ago on the quiet.
His name was also raised at a recent Cowboys board meeting while Henry’s future was being discussed. Henry has bought himself some time with his team’s fine win in Wollongong the other night but he is still in the danger zone.
While not acknowledged as a master tactician, Meninga is a god-like figure in Queensland who commands enormous respect from his players.
His standing as Maroons Origin coach would also be a massive bargaining chip for any club he may join in the player market. Surrounded by a competent backroom team similar to what he enjoys in Origin, Meninga could be a success at either the Broncos or Cowboys.

One of our biggest problems over the last couple of years has been effort/motivation..we've proved that we can defend, we've proven we can attack..but over half the time we just don't turn up to play..can an iconic figure like Meninga change that?

He can't be worse than what we've got already, but he could be a hell of a lot better.

I think the best part apart getting Meninga as our coach would be his influence, he may not be the technical coach some teams have, but he's got a great football passion, which is what we need, not a monotone coach like Griffin.. I also think he could lure some great players up here.

Meninga. No thanks. Ordinary skills as a coach and is only looking at coaching because his business dealings have failed . Hardly a good reason . Stick with Griffin but keep our ears open for next year. Be nice to see Benny come home, any bites ?

Not next year CF def when he has finished at the Knights though and as Coaching Director / mentor .

Looking at our coaching list, we've got the head coach, 2 assistants and 2 "performance" coaches and a strength coach. What's the difference between the last 3? Can we get a specialist defensive coach?

FMD is there a spoon feeding coach. Some of the crap we aren't doing is league 101

The problem we have is that our current brand of footy, for the majority of time, is old fashioned and bearded. meninga would bring more of the same and would make make no difference at all so please forget him.
Bennett? You have to be kidding. he has proven that he is also entrenched in a style that has little in common with the modern game. His personality perfectly represents his approach to the game. he has no regard for providing entertainment in an entertainment industry. He goes out of his way to avoid promoting the game in an industry that is about people. he has completely disengaged the Newcastle media in an area that used to have great access to the home town heroes. television and radio commercials were once filled with Knights players. Not any more.
We need a thinker and some one with a contemporary approach.
Personally, I would love us to pursue a coach. Who focuses on attack, dazzle dazzle, entertainment, ooh la la, x factor, ceremonial pomp and other stuff like that.
Our brand should be represented by a cutting edge excitement machine, not some droll, boring grind-a-thon.

Kevvie Walters would be a much better option.

Surely he's learnt a thing or two by sitting next to the spitting madman for so many years.
