Waste of time, as expected. Very un-bronco like, the coaching staff are starting to get a bit rattled imo.

I suppose as a fan, I should be gutted, robbed. But I don't really give a shit.

I saw that coming. Meanwhile Melbourne and the refs kick back with a beer and laugh.

What I hate is players swear and carry on at referees every single game. But touch them? Oh no! Can't do that!

It's precious. Unless there's malicious intent, it's stupid to suspend someone for it. Dumb rule, makes our game even lamer than it already is.

100%
The nrl never misses an opportunity to make a joke of itself

The two refs who missed the Buderus shoulder charge have been dropped.

What a fuggin joke. Do they even realise how stupid that looks, the vid ref misses it, the match review committee misses it but the refs who get one look from whatever angle they were get dropped for not picking it up.

Why the hell are people whinging.

the rule is correct, there is no need to change it so you can sometimes touch the game officials if you don't want to hurt them, but just show them something. You would be giving more decision making to an already useless judiciary. Was he mad at the ref or was he angry his team just had something happened. He looked happy, but didn't sound happy. He was smiling, but was rough.

Right now the rule is very simple and easy to understand, and its not some new rule. You cannot touch a match official, no matter what, no matter how, no matter why. It's not complicates, yet people who want grey areas removed, want to make this rule complicates.

They got this 100% right. Stop being so fucking butt hurt and feeling so hard done by because you think the world is out to get the Broncos.

Sam had no argument. The refs fucking up doesn't matter, nor does the Storm being dirty, and people are bringing the shoulder charge into this? FFS. He touched the ref, he knew better, now he's suspended. Big deal, next time he might think before he has a brain fart and breaks one of the most basic rules in the game.

I am whinging because they could have just sent him a warning letter or fined him.

IMO: Thaiday wasn't thinging when he did it, he was just showing the ref what happened to him etc. (something all 6 officals missed)

I could understand Thaiday being charged if he touched the ref like Steve Roach did.

Was the Titans player charged for touching the ref. It's not showing on the NRL site.

He was but had no points.

doesnt matter how he did it, he did it. It's black and white.

The refs didn't miss it, they got it wrong. Nothing to do with it. Give 10 tries and it still wouldn't matter, he touched the ref.

The "no touching the ref" rule is utter bullshit. Pure and simple. It's another area the game tries to be black and white and makes an idiot of itself.

My comment was purely about how the Nrl Find ways to make themselves look silly, probably wrong thread.
sam got what anyone deserves for touching a match official,i don't know what he was thinking.

Sometimes I have to question your thought process on some things. So let me get this straight, you think it's ok for a player to touch the ref?

What if a player aggressiveness grabs him, and shakes him by pulling on his jersey? Of course that's bad right? But you're happy for a useless judiciary to make the call as to what is aggressive behaviour and what is not? That is absolutely ridiculous.

There is no reason why a player should have to touch the ref. Ever.

How is this "making an idiot of itself". The only person making an idiot of themselves in you. If this was some grey area that was shrouded is mystery, where the judiciary kept making the decisions and getting them wrong, then fine, whinge away. The fact of the matter is, this is one very simple rule, it is black and white, and that makes it easy to make the right decision all the time.

The fact that you want to change that rule, and make it ok for players to touch the ref defies belief. You're only going off about it because a Bronco has been done for it, you've never had an issue with the rule up until now, and you're not exactly the type of person who remains quite when he hasn't liked a rule over the years. Yet this rule has stood since before I was born.

Cut all the bullshit out of the argument, what do you want? A ref touching grading system?

Grade 1 Ref Touch - Grabbed clothing to display point. Not aggressive (We think).
Grade 2 Ref Touch - Grabbed limb to display point. Not aggressive (We think).
Grade 3 Ref Touch - Pushed Ref to display point. Not agressive (We thinkg).
Grade 4 Ref Touch - Held onto ref in bear hug. Pretty happy (We think).
Grade 5 Ref Touch - Pushed ref while very made. But was smiling, so may not have been super made.
Grade 6 Ref Touch - Shoulder charged ref. Wasn't a shoulder charge, don't listen to the ref boss.
Grade 7 Ref Touch - Probably need to change this rule to just never allow the players to touch the ref, it's simply the best way.

There is a simple way to rule on the game, like this rule, and there is the hard way, which is adding grey areas. This isn't like the obstruction rule where there should be a degree of common sense. The rule is blatantly clear, there is no room for interpretation, and there is no reason to change it.

Don't touch the fucking ref. Ever. Never ever.

I'm with Nashy and AP on this one. You can't create grey areas for this kind of thing. The rules clearly state, don't touch a ref or you will get in trouble. Yeah it was soft, yeah they could've just fined him. But frig me, then people think they can start getting away with it a little more by bringing in excuses. The thing is, this is a rule that can always be avoided, don't touch the refs on purpose. If you or the players think it's stupid then it's quite easy to solve, just don't touch him. It's not like it's a shoulder charge, or head high tackle. It's something that will never have a bearing on the game and can be completely and absolutely avoided. It may have been a harsh penalty and maybe they could've just fined him, but they are setting a clear example here, don't touch the ref. They asked Sam was it unnecessary and could he have avoided touching the ref, answer = yes. Then he gets charged, simple.

Don't touch the ****ing ref. Ever. Never ever.

Have to agree to disagree. By rights you're saying if a player instinctively touches a referee while he's in the defensive line, say to get around him, that should be charged too?

Don't touch the ****ing ref. Ever. Never ever.

If the referee and captain have a chat, and the captain pats him on the back in a "no worries, understood" kind of fashion, charge him.

Don't touch the ****ing ref. Ever. Never ever.

Where has this notion that any physical contact is disrespect? And when did we lose all sense of perspective that we can't make judgments on a case on merit?

The very fact players can speak to referees as disrespectfully as they like and unless they drop one of the C bombs (one is cheat...) they never get charged. But **** me, make a hand gesture or touch his shirt and you're hit with a charge.

It's ridiculous.

I'd be happy to accept it if every captain who argued with the referee got a charge. Because afterall, we're taught from under 6s that the referee won't change his mind. Ask a question sure, but when you get the answer you say "thanks, sir" and get on with the game. It's disrespectful otherwise.

Do we want to sanitise our game that much?

The most ridiculous notion I heard is that "kids will go out on the field on the weekend and tug the referee's shirt if Sam gets let off"...what, a, joke.

I have to say I completely agree with Nashy on this one. It is the one golden rule that should apply across all sports, you do not intentionally touch the ref/umpire/official, no matter what your intent. In my view the judiciary had no option but to find him guilty and suspend. To let him get off would suggest that there are some circumstances where it is permissible for someone to touch the referee, and then it just becomes another grey area. I sit on the judiciary of another sport and that is very much the approach we take, you do not touch the match official, ever.

But arguing is OK, yeah?

No I don't believe so either, in fact we have suspended players for doing that as well. I believe that the captain has a right to question an official about a decision, but it must be done in a respectful manner. if it isn't, the official should have the balls to (a) warn them that they are crossing the line and (b) if they persist, penalise them. If it continues, bin them. If I was an official, I wouldn't cop the way in which some of the players are speaking to refs, but I am probably old fashioned Coxy, or just old.

When have we charged a player for arguing with a ref? FMD Toovey and Prince would never have played as many games as they have.

The punishment does not fit the crime

This is the thing. We judge verbal interaction on the basis of respect. Why can't we base physical interaction on the same basis?

I simply don't understand why it's such a big deal. Grab and shake a ref, or shove him? **** yeah, ban them for a thousand weeks. A slight tug on the shirt, or grab of the arm as Luke Bailey did, be reasonable... there's nothing in it. A warning and perhaps a fine more than sufficient.
