The Brisbane Broncos player at the centre of a domestic violence investigation has reportedly been cleared by police. The Broncos were last month blindsided by reports one of the NRL club’s players had been questioned after police responded to an alleged domestic disturbance on Brisbane’s southside on Sunday, July 28.

The player was not arrested or charged and police said investigations were ongoing. This masthead opted not to name the player involved in the investigation. It is understood police have since indicated to the player that they do not intend to pursue charges. The NRL was notified of the matter by the Broncos, but the player was not stood down under the game’s No Fault Stand Down policy given he had not been charged.

As it stands, the player continues to be available for selection in NRL fixtures but the game’s Integrity Unit could issue further sanctions pending the outcome of its own investigation.

Queensland Police would not confirm any details of the matter other than to say “Investigations into this matter are ongoing”. The Broncos are in the midst of a turbulent phase as they push to play finals football in 2024. After losing eight from nine matches, the Broncos bounced back to form with a season-saving 42-18 win against the Cowboys a fortnight ago.

They then enjoyed a bye last weekend and are sitting 10th on the ladder with three rounds to go. As it stands, the Broncos still have a mathematical chance of finishing in the top eight if they continue to win and a number of results in other matches fall their way over the next few weeks. They return to the field against cellar dwellers Parramatta at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night and must beat the Eels to remain in finals contention.

The Broncos finish the regular season with games against the Dolphins and Storm at Suncorp.

The single comment in that whole article that is actually from the QPS is that the investigation remains on-going.

As do court proceedings.

So why do they say the police have dropped the investigation? Surely it's illegal to report something like that if it's not true?

Their “source” has no idea what he is talking about.

The QPS literally just said it remains under investigation, completely contradicting this source, in the same article.

In some instances, what has happened is so obvious and straightforward that someone is charged immediately.

In other perhaps less straight-forward matters, a brief is prepared first, before someone is charged.

They don't with the wording, though they certainly give that impression. "Reportedly" and "It is understood...indicated..." - these are weasel words and may indicate the rest of what is said is not true or accurate.

It shits me to tears.

Cheers for clearing that up mate.

Regardless we should still drop him.

Are there other parties involved that the situation could have moved towards though?

Atleast that is what I thought when that was said.

Meyn and Badel. Quality journalism fellas. Did the contradiction not stand out to them, or do they have more faith in their ‘source’ over an actual statement by QPS?

I’ll refer you to the public QPS comment…

The investigation is on-going…

Genuine question as I'm not super familiar with how the QPS operate - but do they make it a habit to openly release statements of innocence for parties that are neither arrested nor charged formally?

Have they "openly released a statement of innocence"?

"Queensland Police would not confirm any details of the matter other than to say “Investigations into this matter are ongoing”.

That would appear a boilerplate response that doesn't indicate any leaning towards innocence or guilt, simply states the fact that an investigation is taking place. For an investigation to be occurring (and ongoing a month after the initial report) I would assume there is some level of evidence of an incident occurring and QPS are working through that. Not sure how you get a "statement of innocence" from that, though of course the presumption is he is innocent until and unless there is proof of guilt.

So , if / when the investigation is concluded would a statement be made then ?
Or just left up in the air ? You know that old saying - throw enough mud some of it will stick .

Perhaps, if it was a high profile matter, but routinely?

Not likely. Far too many matters to deal with.

Unlikely to be a “statement of innocence” given the nature of the matter.

No charges to be preferred and the investigation is now concluded or something along those lines is far more likely, if he is not going to be charged. If he is, it will be the usual 22yr old male charged with xxx appearing in court at xxx is all that will be revealed by QPS until the court process is underway.
