Should the Broncos make a play for Ponga

I think we should make play for Ash Taylor as long as the money is right.
he needs a fresh start and would need to earn a spot.

Maybe this.......?

He certainly looked the goods in the lower grades for Brisbane before he went to the Titans. He really hasn't kicked on there at all. The Titans sure have their fill of problems right now. The time is right for Ash to come back.....

The only player even remotely worth close to 16% of your cap is Cameron Smith and that is because of:

- His big game experience
- How consistent and influential he is in each game
- Never has an off game
- Touches the ball more times than anyone on the field
- His all round game

Also add his ability to remain relatively injury free. Ponga has probably missed more NRL games because of injury already in his short time than Smith has in his entire career.

For the right price I would definitely be interested in having another look at Taylor.

Noone is taking into consideration possible salary cap increases.

it apparently goes up to 9.8million from 9.6 and the minimum wage goes up from 105k to 110k
mind you that is just a quick google search don't take it as gospel.

It all seems a bit mercenary. He was with us while it meant a free ride through school, then fucked off to the Cowboys as soon as he was done. Then after a couple of years up north went down to Newcastle because they were prepared to pay big dollars and a long contract. Now he's turned out to be decent value his management are asking for his pay to be doubled, halfway through a contract. Doesn't seem like the actions you'd expect from the type of person you'd want at the Broncos. As soon as he got a slightly better offer he'd be off somewhere else again.

Plus he's had a shite game tonight. Not worth the biggest contract in NRL history.

Agree. But I'd still have him.

Ponga not playing like someone that's worth 1.5 mil.

The Knights have needed their stars to step up. Ponga does not. This is one of his problems. The inconsistency.

No one should pay him $1.5 million until he fixes that.

It makes me wonder if the massive contracts that get thrown at these young blokes, (based mainly on potential) are actually detrimental to their career development 🤔

Absolutely. The younger generation grow up fucking entitled and have everyone wipe their ass for them so don’t react well when things go against them. The older generation who slugged it out for peanuts deserve to be salty about the shit that goes on these days.

The worst part is when players come off contract then coincidentally hit a purple patch of form to blow out their market value, sign a mega million dollar deal and then proceed to just turn up when they feel like once they’ve secured their pay check.

It probably doesn't help, no. The million dollar contract Ash Taylor is on would be something of an albatross around his neck.

exactly what I've been saying :)

I don’t know about you but the season overall, you could argue Pearce has had a slightly more influential role in the Knights season then Ponga. At the very worst it is neck and neck.

I watched a lot of the Knights games during their hot streak and it was no coincidence Pearce got 6 straight MOTM awards. He was running the show and Ponga jumped on the back of it. Pearce would also be pushing the Dally M Leaderboard over Ponga which would be a fair barometer to how influential he has been in games. Do not forget Ponga had a very slow start to the year when he was at 6 and he has missed more games this year than Pearce. If Ponga was on $1.5M in the knights cap for this season, you would say they are not getting that value.

Just so we are clear I rate Ponga and would fucking love him at Brisbane. But he is not worth 16% of a salary cap. He is probably a million dollar player value wise and you would try supplement that with TPA’s not to blow your cap management. If he became a player where he could single handedly carry an underperforming team over the line consistently on his own back, then the $1.5M discussion has more merit. But Pearce has had a very big role in Ponga’s game this year.

Could you imagine paying $1.5M for a fullback who may touch the ball like 20-30 times a game tops? You would have to revolve your game around getting him as much ball as possible to even justify the value and then your game plan would become predictable. Ponga is at his best when he can chime in and roam as he pleases.

might be me and my old mind but i seem to recall Pearce doing this every year for the last decade.....go on a absolute tear for 6 weeks then back to bang average the rest...

Maybe its me and my biased memories..??

Ive said for years now our number 1 halfback plays a hours drive down the road from Red Hill...

Taylor knows the place inside and out (like Hunt), is earning far too much money for the return generated (like Hunt) and plays in a key position where we are currently weakest (like Hunt)

....ummmmm....i dunno what this means...???...bring em both back..?? :moo:

More likely the titans want him out... they'll have to pay about 600k of his wages for the next 3 years or so

Who was it that mentioned he's 25 next year... Milford is 26 next year and I sure as hell know who I want more.

I find it pretty funny you are all speaking as if holmes has already signed look at the facts.... His family and friends are in nq... he is best friends with michael morgan.... oh yeah and he hasn't even been ruled out of a roster spot on the jets... also the broncos do have a fullback for the future his name is jesse arthars!!!!!

I'd rather Hunt back at 6. Dearden and SOS are already better halves than Cash Taylor.
no offence but who in there right mind would want taylor for crying out loud

also that ain't happening because personally Turpin, Dearden, O'Sullivan and milford is not a bad spine. Even if McCullough is still hooker. Dearden has a good control game, milford is electric at fullback... and O'Sullivan even though he is bloody slow has a great running game then turpin is also electric and creative and McCullough would add that game management and leadership

Taylor would probably be a huge risk even at massive salary cut ($400K or so?). He just doesn't seem like he can mentally handle the NRL.
