But in all seriousness, Canberra is beautiful. Great place to be if you like the outdoors (lakes, rivers, mountains, widlife etc.). And a great place to raise a family (always ranked high on most livable cities in the world). No real traffic, high incomes, high education, multiculturally diverse (without the segregation), etc.
Only thing is miss are the beaches. And it might be a bit too quiet if your in your 20's.

Coming from a military family, I spent a few years of my childhood growing up in Canberra. Lived in Latham and Flynn. Was born and bred in Toowoomba though, and going from there to Canberra, weather wise, was a total shock to my system. But you are very right in the way you describe it. It does have a very special beauty to it.

Yea I live in Denman Prospect (new suburbs in the Monoglo), so I'm like 15min away from the Dam. Yea love it there. Without a beach, it's the best place in the summer (I'm not game enough to swim in any of the lakes).

Canberra is situated well. 2 hours to the snow, 3 hours to the beach, 20 min and you're in the bush.
Bush is good because half the pricks here are lazy, so while they complain about having nothing to do, you have the freedom to roam.
Lots of bars now days, and some good locals - I'm a country boy so have found a local called moby dicks. Brilliant little pub.
