The Ashes 2010-2011

The amazing Hotspot strikes again.

Even Bell knows its complete shit for faint nicks, good referral.

I reckon it's CRAP they can rule a batsman not out because hot spot doesn't show up. Fair enough they could rule a batsman OUT because they see a mark on it, but it's shown before it's inconclusive at times.

I think if you're given out caught behind the only way you should be cleared would be if hot spot shows a mark on something other than the bat (eg pad), and not the bat itself, or the replay shows there is a gap between ball and bat/glove and thus couldn't possibly have been hit.

Agree. Hopefully the powers that be learn from it and adjust the laws accordingly. I'm with Slats in that I also believe their was the faintest of white dots on the inside edge for a frame or 2. Tough decision.

The whole point of the review system, as they keep saying, is to remove the "howler". How can it be a "howler" when the evidence isn't conclusive either way? Thus, shouldn't the umpire's original decision stand?

Fark the review system needs some work.

Even in Rugby League - where the reviewing system still comes under a decent amount of scrutiny - a video referee who is doing his job properly will look at a potential try that has come under some doubt and if, after using all the technology he is given, he can't say with a 100% certainty that the Ref's concerns are justified, the benefit of the doubt is given (or the Ref will go with his initial thoughts via a Refs Call).

As more games are played under the UDRS, the referring of nicks behind is turning into a lottery and the players (arguably through no fault of their own) are taking good advantage of it. LOL at some of the experts who thought this would promote walking - get real fellas, this is 2011.

Well his sensational captaincy has still yielded a flogging on the first innings.

Haters gonna hate.

Good knock by Bell. icon_thumbs_u

He has been wasted down at 6 in this series.

agreed, I think he will move to 5 possibly 4 in the next year.

If we want to be competitive in the next Ashes series in England we must push retirement on Punter and Katich IMO. Cook and Bell are perfect examples of what happens when you discover talent and back them regardless of some poor performances.

Katich is good as gone.

Punter deserves to drop down the order first before he's booted out immediately - I don't think the next crop are ready just yet.

With that said, Punter will be lucky to make another Ashes and I reckon Kat and Huss will be gone, Harris and Haddin could also join that list.

I think a young players who isn't ready but chucked into the arena will be better off playing test cricket rather than playing in a below average shield team. It will be a big decision, I just hope Ponting makes the right decision.

That's a fair point on the domestic competition, I agree it's mediocre but it's filled with mediocre players who simply aren't up to International standard.

Punter deserves a chance to hold the fort.

I know Punter is a great of the game and all that but I don't think he deserves to be dropped down the order to get one more year out of him. It will just hinder Australian Cricket. I'd prefer to see a Ferguson, Marsh, White or Cosgrove given a chance to build a career in the baggygreen. Lets face it if we want to be competitive in the next Ashes series the rebuild starts now....

Ferguson, Marsh, White or Cosgrove

Ferguson is the only one I'd consider and even then he's going to have to do A LOT to be deserving of a baggy green.

half of the great of Australian Cricket didn't deserve the baggygreen when it was first handed to them..

They had at least achieved something as a test player before getting it though.

I mean you can try and argue Healey but he's more an exception as opposed to the rule. Rushing players in is not a positive move.

The only batsman in domestic 4 day cricket who deserves a Baggy Green is Dave Hussey, who I reckon you can get a good 2 years out of. Given that Ferguson has spent most of his career on the batting paradise that is Adelaide Oval, for him to average only 35 is disgraceful. He'd have to fire in the one day team for the next 12-18 months for me to consider him.

I think the Aus top 6 is in shambles, I've got no clue on their correct order. But IMO I'd have the following..

Katich
Watson
Khawaja
Clarke
M. Hussey
D. Hussey

Ponting has to go. He is a cancer on the side of which i now have no doubt. His figures the last 4 years are rubbish and no other batsman would have survived. Katich and Hussey should be moved on at the end of next summer.

For the vacant opening slot it' should be a bat off between the likes of Maddinson and Hughes with S. Marsh a possible smokey. Whilst Lynn, Ferguson, Smith or even one of the openers who missed out would be battling for M. Hussey's spot.

Watson is a world class first change bowler. Lets face it, most of our quicks are 3rd stringers, if that. If our batting continues to struggle and our bowling options don't improve I wouldn't be adverse to the selectors even playing Watson as the 3rd quick. Whilst Smith isn't even a genuine Shield spinner, he can fill a hole. A tail along the lines of the following wouldn't be the worst.

6. Watson
7. Haddin
8. Smith
9. Haurtiz
10. Johnson
11. Harris

It would certainly also bring a Mitch Marsh (150kph outswingers and the best bat of the Aus U19s) or Andrew Mcdonald (if he continues his batting exploits) into the equation as an extra pace option and number 6-8.
