The Ashes 2013/14

We're going to have to try and eek out a 400+ score to be competitive.

The pitch is doing nothing.
It's turning day one. We'll see how Lyon goes if England bat last.

I'm surprised at how much turn their spinners have been getting. We will need Lyon to go well.

As it's supposed to, being a drop in wicket and all.

The spinners haven't really done anything spectacular .... moreso stupid shots from our batsman.

The ball that got smith turned enough, albeit quite slowly. The ball that got Rogers turned sharper than the rest.

Dribbling again. A batsmen gets out cheaply and it's the end of the world.

Sorry king dick, forgot you're the indomitable purveyor of ration and reason who we all must aim to please ...

No really, Steve smith is terrific

It's ok to be plain wrong.

Seems like someone has an agenda against Steve Smith. It'll be funny seeing you go nuts if he ends up being the next captain.

Australia lucky to be in a 50/50 position. England blew a few chances to be into the tail this afternoon. Australia will need to bat past lunch if they want to be still in this match at the end of day 3.

Haha we are beyond fucked if smith is the next captain

I tend to agree. Maybe favour Australia just a little bit more with their noses in front after the Haddin dropped catch. Poor Monty - he bowled pretty good today and deserved that wicket.

Still anyone's test match.

No surprise to see Smith rub people the wrong way on here tbh.

Comes across as that typical Blues selection complete with the typical hair style that seems to define this period of Australian cricket. The one that young Pup, White & Watson all sported which suggested they valued their trip to the hairdressers as much as they did the nets. Which isn't to write it off as a superficial hatred, his first stint reflected what many thought was the degradation of test batting and the current generation's impatience at the crease. Given some of the shots he came up with during that stint, you can hardly blame them for having such a long memory.

In saying that, I believe Smith is one of the bats we've got, which will either be a sad indictment of Australian cricket or a compliment pending on how he performs at home. So far, he hasn't been too outstanding but it's a shame to see fans sharpen their knives at the first available opportunity.

Guess it's just the nature of a forum really. It's an outlet for fans to express their frustration and that's perfectly acceptable and encapsulated in every Match day thread.

However, and I'd like to see this for every future discussion, when you bag out somebody, I'd like to see an alternative presented.

I just think he would be a terrible test captain. I couldn't give a shit what he does with his hair, the fact is he seems to be more a 'batsmen' these days and IMO he's just not very good. He doesn't seem to be able to dig in for long periods and he usually only gets 20 or 30 runs... Hardly inspiring for the troops when the captain plays some shots that are more resembling sword fighting than cricket and is back in the sheds half an hour later.

As for an alternative I have absolutely no idea. My point is is something drastic doesn't change in his game, and we get to a point that he is the best option... We are fucked IMO

Calling him a future captain was definitely going out on a limb and then some.

Still his performance in the Shield prove that he's one of the best we've got and he's still got time well and truly on his side.

That's true. I have no dramas with smiths inclusion in the side at this stage, my major gripe is the impact that t20 has seemed to have on these guys. They don't seem to be able to change their mindset between t20 and test. So we end up having guys that swing at anything that comes within 5 meters of them, or Watson that refuses to hit anything unless he can hit it for a boundary. Someone needs to tell him his allowed to run singles

I just think he would be a terrible test captain.

He captains NSW in the shield when he plays for them and he captained the Sixers to the title when he was 22. He has leadership qualities that almost none of the batsmen in his age bracket have.
