The Glory Days

Thank you Splinter! I was 5 at the time and don't remember anything of the game but I do remember my old man's excitement. I do have footy cards from that era (they still smell of that pink chewing gum) of Wally Lewis and Wally Fullerton Smith, likely the others as well. All I knew at the time was that my dad worshipped some 'Wally' guy so I knew that one of those two cards was special. I must track down that shoe box and see what I have! I spent many Saturday mornings washing my dad's and uncle's cars so that I could afford those footy cards at the corner shop. A couple of years later and Wally Lewis quickly became my hero too and, if I'm honest, he still is.

Me too. I can't go to Suncorp without visting whichever version of the Walter J Lewis statue happens to be there!

The 28-0 game flattered the Chooks tremendously. I think the Broncos held them near scoreless for the first 40 and then the Chooks went on with it when the Broncos took more players off.

I don't think defence dominated at all, the Chooks missed some important tackles and conceded 5 linebreaks in the first half alone. I don't know where you got 4 try savers from the first half from, it was three on my count and only one was something worth making mention of, the rest were all very elementary. Last time I checked, Rugby League was made up of more facets and all Phillips brought to the table was the ability to make simple tackles and kick goals from right infront. Meanwhile, one of the game's greatest players is beating most first tackle attempts, kicking pin point long range kicks, settting up tries and being awesome in general. All Phillips got was the 9 commentary team to act all sentimental because omg agenda. Nothing different to them waxing lyrical about Idris' dreadlocks or how awesome Benji Marshall is when the Tigers are being dead-beats.

I love the Raging Bull Bman, he's the player that brought me into this board and maybe the reason I'm right here, right now, but stuff me, he added nothing to that game. Infact, most of the forwards sucked that game except for Thorn who was great and deserves more respect. I just don't think we watched the same game at all.

It was a strange game, Brisbane sort of played a backline game as Dell made mention post-match but weren't willing to be too risky and throw unnecessary passes. Roosters tried the same but young Mini, Cross, Hegarty, Sing and PHILLIPS couldn't compete with what the Broncos had to offer.

This was also the game that I think earned Fittler the overrated award. The commies were so quick to pour on him being injured despite not really showing up on the telly and honestly, he was kind of crap before then too. Brisbane were just the best at a time where they should have been a transitional period. Unlimited interchanges + amazing coaching + great talent for life.

A premiership does sound quite glorious in my opinion. The week leading up to it would also be quite glorious. And also the several months after. Therefore, glory days is quite an apt explaination of 2006.

With all the troubles going on at the club atm let's use this thread to enjoy and share our memories about the wonderful success we have achieved in our history.

I'll start it off with our demolition of Newcastle in the 2006 semi-final.

I can remember this game quite well. It was my school fete that afternoon and they were offering out Broncos balloons and cheap merchandise like that. Newcastle weren't at full strength as Bedsy was suspended and Steve Simpson was injured (from memory) and we went out for the kill and belted Newcastle 50-6 winning our first finals match since 2002. I remember being on the phone to my grandad at halftime and he was laughing at the Knights and was saying how we weren't going to let up.

It's remarkable how many times we've belted the Knights. That semi proved forever that Lockyer > Johns.

Lockyer is my favourite player ever, but Joey was an absolute freak, I don't think I could even say who was better in a straight up question, each of them had different attributes that made them the best. Regardless, they'd be my 6 and 7 in any dream team I was creating :)

Im still learning to analyze a game so there is a possibility my game reviews might not be 100% but I'm getting a lot better. I enjoy your reviews Pete there one of the best I've read.

- I concede you were right about the defense as the Roosters did miss to many tackles in the first half and Brisbane made more meters easily

- I miscounted the Philips try savers that was my mistake saying there was 4. Everyone has their own opinion and I still think Philips was worthy of the Clive Churchill medal. Coming up with 1 on 1 try savers on Brad Thorn, Lote Tuquri and Wendell Sailor is no mean feat and the Broncos would've won in a landslide if it wasn't for him. Not taking anything away from Locky who was outstanding no doubt.

- I thought Gorden Tallis played quite well. He proved a handfull everytime he came into play running the ball up hard attracting defenders and coming up with some offloads.

- I agree Fittler played ordinary and that the Roosters inexperience hurt them. In the original recap of this game you commented how Ricketson looked off. He pulled his hamstring early in the preliminary final and went in with limited game time he still came up with 11 hit ups and 30 tackles though.

It's all good Bman, I'm just pointing out where I disagree.

The thing with the Phillips try savers is that if he had have missed on Thorn and Tuqiri, it'd be remembered as woeful misses as opposed to great tackles, really he just went and did his job on those occasions.

I mean, Thorn made the break inside his own half and Phillips met him a good 20m away with other Roosters cover defence swarming him. It was a good tackle, but any fullback worth their weight would have come up with it.

Similar story with Tuqiri, cept he received the ball on the second tackle and the only option he had was to pin the ears back. Instead, he stepped straight back into Phillips.

I'll give him credit with Dell, even though he had a 10m start and Sailor had about as much space as Tuqiri, Dell could blitz people in those situations, so there's one worth celebrating.

The other try saver was off a chip kick from Walters which bounced up poorly for Lockyer and perfectly for Phillips.

You're entitled to your opinion, but in order for Phillips to be a worthy recipient based on those plays, they all had to be these freakish try saving plays when really they were all fairly basic.

But always look forward to these reviews all the same. :takdir:

I've been inspired to reach for the bookcase and pull out Broncos v Penrith round 2 1988.

No changes from the big win against Manly.

Alf pulls a huge right foot step out of somewhere to dust up Greene and runs 40 to score after a Matterson off-load.

Broncos up 16-2 at half time.

Keith Gee, Alf and Turtle tries.

Turtle off and Kerrod on for his debut in number 27.

Goodwin scores pretty soft try.

Broncos 16-6.

Izzard scores.

Broncos 16-10 kick to come.

Good Cartwright offload.

Um, carry on. Your secret is safe...
