The QLD Autopsy...

Im an idiot then coz gillett needs to go. He looks like he will drop the ball every carry he makes and i dont remember one good run where he actually bent the line. Teo and guerra bent it and almost went thru a few times. Gillett offers nothing

Yes you are. It is great that you can admit it though, not many can.

Good for you

It's so annoying when facts get in the way of rants and agendas...

Gillett is playing great... at club level. How many chances does he need in origin tho? Do we have to lose a series for him to get dropped? 2 series? Taylor is playing out of his skin and has earnt another chance, so gillett should make way.

You guys just ark up coz hes a bronco. Mcqueen should go too coz his job was to help thurston and he didnt do that. Papalii was lazy as shit too so he could go, but id love to keep him just so he can axe gal again. This has nothing to do with agendas. Gillett was fucking ordinary in Game 1 and every game last year. He has had enough shots, so its time we stop carrying a few players and get some people in who deserve it.

Dont wait til we lose to change, change to prevent the loss

At least he doesn't hide in the centres or tries to do show pony tricks when the only thing that needs to be done, is just applying pressure on a ball already lying in the try zone. Taylor, for all the talent and size, has a pea heart, and should never, ever wear the proud maroon jersey again!

Gillett worked his arse off, defended very well, was aggressive in his tackling and made sure the NSW'kers looked somewhere else for their runs.
Sure he didn't have barnstorming runs (and wasn't fed any proper ball either because Cronk was gone within 5 minutes and DCE never really showed up either), missed one of 37 tackles and dropped a single (albeit crucial) ball, so let's scape-goat him.

The only guy that needs to go, because he won't bring anything more than what he's shown, is McQueen.

Papalii will be better for the run, Guerra showed he has what it takes. Besides, it's not exactly like we have tons of options to cover Thaiday and Parker in the near future. Oates is the only other guy I can think of, whom is worthy of mention.

So it's OK to carry a player as long as they put a hit on Gal? And this isn't an agenda? You fo' real, bro?

Big Papa was our worst on field on Wednesday, and that's OK, he's also one of the most inexperienced and has been playing shit all year - he will be better for the run.

Gillett on the other hand, yeah so he bombed a try. So did many others with ordinary plays during the match. He was in everything in defence in that second half. And I think he played the whole game? I'd take him over Papa. If Matty scores that try he's a fucking legend because QLD likely go on to win. Unfair to rake him over the coals for being one of the better players in a below-potential side, IMO.

But this should probably be moved to the Gillett polarisation thread.

Was lucky enough to have front row seats for this game. I have more appreciation for Myles after some of the punishment he was dishing out right in front of us. Awesome stuff.

I was in the front row too and I agree. But I saw that drop ball from Gillet though and it was pretty bad. I know he defended well in the last half but could you honestly risk him in a decider? If qld had won he could be forgiven to a greater extent, had he still made those errors but if there's someone else in possibly better consistent form out there should meninga not learn from his mistake ala Papa? I tend to think so

Well if you are dropping people for one drop ball or mistake include Myles in that, thurston, slater just to name a few

Wow it's going to be a different looking team game 2!

Damn, the game holds up really well on replay.

Great ebb and flow to it.

Queensland started the better side. Their structures were brilliant to watch and I think the Blues were looking mighty nervous until Cooper Cronk went off.

From there, the momentum shifted. Suddenly, Queensland started looking pedestrian while the Blues were beginning to make plenty of headway through the ruck and asking more questions of the Maroons defence. Through the weight of possession they score 10 points while Queensland look entirely lost at sea and playing some very desperate football, that offload from Myles in particular was clear representation.

Queensland looked entirely shot coming out from half-time but to their credit seemingly found another gear. To only score one try while in that gear was a credit to the Blue's defence but also on the fortunte of the night. Couple of passages where the key play seemingly went awry and as a result, the Blues were able to live to fight another day.

Despite a tense finish, the Blues hold on and record one of their finest victories in Origin history.

Referee - Favored Queensland but the way NSW are carrying on you'd swear they didn't receive any calls all night when they received a few 50/50s and a blatantly wrong call that gifted them a 4 point lead which had a huge effect on the game. It's a tough game and I'd rather Hayne than freakin' Klein any day of the week. If he returns next game, so help me god...

Player Ratings
Queensland

Billy Slater - Saved his best performance of the year for Queensland. Sensational game from Billy and kept trying till the bitter end. Can't fault him for going himself at the death, if anybody was going to score for Queensland, it was going to be him.

Brent Tate - Was just about the only player moving us forward at one stage.

Justin Hodges - Really thought he injected himself well into the game and came up with some nice plays during our resurgence.

Greg Inglis - Outside of supporting McQueen, thought he had an average first half but had a much better second. His value is in his presence, both Boyd tries came down to his decoy.

Darius Boyd - Nice move on Morris for the first try, thought he defended well for the most part and came up with a couple of smart kick returns.

Johnathan Thurston - Wasn't terrible but definitely off and one Origin game he'd rather forget.

Cooper Cronk - Injured in the opening 10 minutes, can't rate.

Mat Scott - Thought he played well in the minutes he was afforded. Just needs to up his involvement but he made some strong runs through the middle and created space out wide.

Cam Smith - Pretty ordinary game. Tried his best but when Queensland were on top he couldn't get us on the front foot because of his ankle.

Nate Myles - Good work-rate but came up with a bunch of dumb plays which really hurt Queensland.

Chris McQueen - Was pretty quiet outside of that linebreak to start the game.

Matt Gillett - Received a lot of gametime but was very ordinary I thought on the right edge. I don't think he bombed a try - I think NSW had him covered but was fortunate not to be penalised a second error and a lot of his runs were easily handled. Couple of spurts where he looked fired up in the second half, but needed more.

Corey Parker - Started quite poorly and really offered the Maroons little go-forward but got better as the game wore on. Capable of more.

Daly Cherry-Evans - Couple of good kicks aside, DCE looked a little out of his depth and made a couple of bad choices with the ball. Willing to accept it was a matter of bad preperation.

Ben Te'o - Really raised the tempo when he came on. Some very good runs through the middle that almost justified the lack of props. Did throw a silly offload which really hurt us and his overall score.

Aidan Guerra - A promising debut let down by a greedy lunge at the line when GI had space.

Josh Papalii - Couple of strong carries but we struggled during the period he was on. I wonder if there was something to that.

NSW
Jarryd Hayne - Man of the Match performance from Hayne. Set up the first try singling out JT and scored a determined try himself. Crazy thing is, I think he's capable of more.

Brett Morris - Scored the opening try for the Blues but his performance was pretty much subdued outside of a simple tackle on Boyd.

Josh Morris - Thought he actually got the better of GI in the first half but fell off a bit in the second half and put through a dumb kick which just about lost the game for the Blues.

Michael Jennings - Quiet outside picking up one loose ball.

Daniel Tupou - Nervous debut

Josh Reynolds - Thought he played well. Was always on the front foot and provided Hayne with really linked well with Hayne.

Trent Hodkinson - Nervous and a few of his kicks seemed off.

Aaron Woods - Good game from Woodsy I thought. Asserted himself and while he walked a fine line, was rewarded after a timid start last year

Robbie Farah - One of the best on ground. Really guided the Blues nicely and came up with a couple of important kicks, runs and offloads which gave the Blues the momentum in the first half

James Tamou - Decent contribution

Beau Scott - Did a job but not overly well.

Ryan Hoffman - Ditto.

Paul Gallen - Strong game from Gal. Some strong carries and good offloads which helped swing the momentum the Blues way.

Anthony Watmough - Toiled but didn't make much of an impact other than milk a penalty.

Trent Merrin - Earned a couple of handy quick play the balls but was otherwise pretty easily handled.

Luke Lewis - Barely saw him.

Tony Williams - Ditto.

Definitely agree re the ref. As usual, nsw fail to understand that 1. They WON
2. This doesn't mean they've got the series (refer to 1995 for proof when qld fans wanted refunds on their tickets when half the qld team were injured and a handful of rookies were brought in) and
3. The ref made dodgy calls for both teams ie just a typical weekly nrl game

I'd like to think putting a good specialist prop on the bench might make all the difference

I can see u clearly cant take a tongue in cheek statement. Papalii was crap but he smashed gal so im jokingly saying thats enough for me to keep him. Stop being so fucking defensive of a player that was rubbish just because he has a broncos jersey on. If there was an agenda i would be singling him out. im not. mcqueen papalii and gillett were all bad, and are all replaceable. The only reason his name keeps coming up and making it look like an agenda is because we are on a broncos forum and half of the people defend him. Mcqueen and papalii would be being talked about more if they were broncos and then u would say i have an agenda against them too

Thaiday, Taylor, Lillyman and Lawrence are all more than capable replacements.

Let me also mention something no-one has brought up. Gillett was RIDICULOUSLY lucky not to be penalised for not 1, but 2 shoulder charges late in the 2nd half. I couldnt believe when he went for the first one and we got off, but literally the very next tackle he did another one. Absolute idiocy. Have no idea how we didnt get pinged on them. I admire his intention, but couldve very easily relieved all the pressure from nsw

Agreed. It wasn't just that one try he bombed. And he's shown before he chokes in games (drop balls etc and maybe the same reason why Taylor hasn't played origin again?)
Besides the necessary changes through injury, I don't think 3 changes is a huge amount. Rare for qld but nothing on nsw

He was tempting fate but if you watch them again he didn't tuck his arm in which is the big indicator of a shoulder charge.

Was considering using it against him, but happy to give him the benefit of the doubt on that occasion.

Yes and nsw have had so much success in making unnecessary changes so let's follow their lead. FFS do some of you hear what you saying?

Changing the team is not always a bad thing ffs. I think dropping gillet and papa is a necessity we need to take before we lose. No point doing it for game 3. I think McQueen deserves one more game now that I think about it, just because of the quality of his work last year. Gillette was ordinary in all 3 last year so his chances are up, and papalii is just not in good enough form.
