The Wayne Bennett Super thread!

I took note of the body language of the players I could see during the halftime talk. Aside from Glen ( he was towelling down his head and shoulders ) every players head was still, eyes focussed on WB,every word being absorbed. I knew they had listened but still I doubted until 50 seconds of the second half, then I became a believer. In case anyone has forgotten, I never ever wanted WB to leave and thought then as I do now that it was the single greatest blunder in Broncos history.

Maybe he was the loss the club needed to have. In a way it showed the weakness
We had behind the scenes. I think this time the club will have a post bennett plan. I think the future of the club looks good again and we will get the respect again like teams such as the storm have

Perhaps you're right, maybe it had to happen. By writing this I acknowledge I could be wrong about some aspects but in no way does that mean it had to happen. I didn't think the Broncos were broken or required fixing. Naturally, as a distant fan I know very little about the machinations of the club so my comments are not really valid. I know though the reasons given for WBs departure. From a Bronco perspective they were all about going forward , improvement and evolution. We went backward, worsened and regressed....all opposite to the stated goals. It's undeniable, we got worse, much worse. We had lost the aura and respect.

We are half way back. WB is building us back again and his men are buying into it again. Thaiday is testament, what a massive leap forward as I was happy if he went back to Isc and stayed there, now I name him each week, a cornerstone. Respect is being hard won and the aura is slowly being restored. My ninety year old Mum is proud once again of 'her' boys including her oldest boy, WB.

Does anyone still think it was a mistake to bring back Bennett and Boyd?

I think they have both made s big difference. Boyd has been very good since he came back and I don't know what more to say about Bennett. He has turned us into contenders in no time at all.

Re: Does anyone still think it was a mistake to bring back Bennett and Boyd?

You're jumping the gun on Boyd a bit, this was his first good game since returning for us, but completely agree on Bennett. Every week, he makes it more clear that Griffin just wasn't up to it.

was that ever in doubt?

According to Paul White it was. Everything was 'perfect' about the Broncos, no-one not directly involved in the NRL had a clue and nothing about the team / club could be improved.

Until Bennett got there. Deadwood was cut, nonsense ideas and rules were dispensed with and a minor part of the squad was changed. Now we're leading the comp and our crowd / member numbers are up.

Funny how incongruous the previous 'talk' and the current actions really are...

I've said this before & I'll say it again - whoever doubted or questioned Wayne coming back to us has no clue.

The proof is in the results. We haven't done anything yet, it's only the half way point of the season but it's easy to tell we are a transformed team under Wayne. I hope he stays for as long as he wants this time.

I'm not one to say "I told you so", but I think my pro-Bennett & Boyd views prior to the season have been more than validated so far.

Not to mention we have a lot of room to improve, Darius is only at about 75%.

Decent start.

Needs to show me something in September before I get on the bandwagon.

The thing i do worry about it that WB cant go on forever and what happens next time he leaves? We cant afford to be so reliant on WB to make the Broncos contenders. I don't see Walters as his successor either tbh so it will be interesting to see if we have a better plan this time around.

What impresses me the most about Bennett now is that he is not only getting the best out of most individuals, but more importantly is moulding a team where everyone is starting to really play for each other, to an extent I haven't seen for a long time. The team is really playing as a team and it shows, especially THAT try yesterday where the support play was outstanding.

Also, his faith in Milford as 5/8 and the halves combination with Hunt, whose better form is for mine a result of playing with Milford. They are really starting to play more and more like a unit rather than individuals.

Didn't Wayne also say yesterday that he sees Milford and Hunt as the next Maroons halves combination? I think he might be right once Cronk and JT call it a day. In any case, I think our halves combination is a huge factor in what I see as a huge lift in our attacking game. If he can just crank up that defensive line speed...

He is surely building a winning culture again and the importance of that now, and down the track cannot be under-estimated.

75% ......ehh?

60% imo.

I wouldn't even put him that high. Which just shows how ordinary our last couple of years worth of FB options have been. He will get there though.

I love all this "I told you so" crap.

Nailed it.

The fact that a massively underdone boyd is outplaying all our FBs from the last few years highlights how average they were

The great philosopher said 'carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero '. Simply, seize the day and put little faith in the future. Who gives a **** about a future that cannot be enjoyed now ! It will take care of itself and the departure of WB will only have a significant effect if the incoming coach decides to make sweeping changes and abandon what worked to make the Broncos great. If worrying about the future is what you are doing then you are failing to enjoy the 'now'. Sure, plan for the future and doubtless the Broncos and WB have but enjoy the present. The future is not particularly important, it will be what it will be.

You wont be saying that if we get another Henjak

Well, one advantage we will have is that hopefully it will be a little bit more structured (ie WB's exit) this time compared to the last occasion, with the club having more notice. Second big advantage is that the clusterfuck that is Bruno Cullen will not be involved in the process. So I am cautiously optimistic that it will be okay. We just did not have a lot of luck with the rookie coaches we tried. It has worked for the Roosters, Souths and the Cowboys. It just a matter of getting the right person.
