Trial 1: Broncos vs Cowboys

Where did i ever say to drop the guy ...

He is an awesome winger ... he is an awesome FINISHER and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

not every winger has to be a fullback, as much as many of them seem to want to these days

So, what you're trying to say is, despite winning a premiership and CC Medal etc at Fullback, and playing there for the most part of his career.. that Darius Boyd is a winger pretending to be a Fullback?

No what i am saying is that Darius Boyd's best position is wing. IMO he is a bit like Barba in the sense that he had an absolutely brilliant year in 2010 (Barba's was obviously 2012) but he has never been able to consistently reach those heights since. he has shown it in small patches but not consistently.

We've had this discussion. Let's not start it again please...

To some, Boyd is a top fullback, to others (like me), he's like Hoffman: A great winger, although admittedly a more capable custodian than Josh.

Let's not revive the circular argument.

Yes let's not revive the argument but let me add my piece before I say not to ;)

At least Vidot is consistent when he runs hard. Vatuvei only shows up once every three games. There aren't that many good wingers around and the ones that are around want to play at the back and whinge on social media.

Sorry P - my last post on this subject ....

Last season, Manu scored 17 tries from memory. Vidot scored 5. I know who I'd prefer.

I enjoy watching Vidot carry defenders on his back as he consistently makes his 10 metre runs. However, I'd prefer watching him run as fast as Vatuvai which he can't, despite being 8 kgs lighter, and score as many tries, despite Manu's shortcomings.

I know what you mean about good wingers being scarce. It's because they all play for other clubs.

As for UnB's post about Boyd's best position, I'm sorry, and I know this is now stale, and he will be our FB, but his best position is at another club. Nevertheless, reality is reality, but I will always maintain the minority view that his best position with us is wing.

On the question of his tries in Origin, for mine it's because he is a very, very good finisher, he's quick enough and he can read the play as a good winger should .... and yes, he gets great service, but then, all wingers should.

No, I merely pointed out both sides, and which one I belong to, the same way everybody knows you belong to the first group.

Why keep repeating the same thing?

If you say so, mate.

I am asking the same question.

Kahu dropping 2 bombs in only a trial game doesn't rate as a concern on BHQ - but discussing the merits of Boyd on the wing - presumably to make way for Kahu at the back - sounds like a great idea?

And then Bennett turning it into a positive: "Well at least he made it through un-injured", already trying to plaster over the gaps in Kahu's confidence/ability (because he's only there because Bennett made the hasty decision to cut Barba and Hoffman for Boyd). Otherwise he'd be battling it out for a wing spot behind Maranta, Vidot, Copley and Reed.

Interesting Bennett's dig in the presser that if Kahu fails early that Maranta would be the second runner for the 1.

Can't be sure of your position here. . But it sounds like you're against those decisions?

I think he answered those questions quite well! That is a huge bonus though for jordan to get past that hurdle.. especially on such a slippery surface. couldn't imagine what would be going through his head the poor guy. I Just know he will come good in the coming weeks once the bad luck has finally left him to show his strengths.

One thing Griffin was terrible at was chopping and changing his fullback options because of players like hoffman and barba.. hodges even.. Just glad we the supporters and the players are well aware of who is playing what position and where they stand in the team dynamic. Not a fan of the "all spots are up for grabs" approach.

The conditions were horrible according to reports. Side winds, rain, mud...
It's a miracle Kahu didn't drop more bombs, but he didn't use that as an excuse, rather saying he's still gonna have to improve.
If someone deserves a break and support, it's this kid!

honestly all the talk of kahu dropping a couple of balls is making a mountain out of .. not even a molehill..

I want Kahu to catch a break. Much like I wanted Yow Yeh to. I want Kahu to be the Ben Hunt of 2015. I know it's sad to see talent cruelled by injuries and bad circumstances. Round 1 he faces the premiers. Greg Inglis as the yard stick, Adam Reynolds bombs all night with Burgess, Glen Stewart and Sutton smashing every him on the kick chase.

Kahu will be wishing he was back in the "rain" in Mackay in a trial game.

I want the Broncos to succeed this year. I honestly feel that we are going to really struggle with Kahu at the back because we don't have time to run with a "project" fullback.

We need a Shane Perry back there. Solid. Error free. Simple game plan driven until Boyd returns. Maranta has shown that safety under the high ball. Eden I know nothing about but is a seasoned footballer.

Hunt and Milford (20) should be our projects. But the absence of a solid fullback is going to be incredibly trying on Milford. The pressure cooker media environment of Canberra vs Brisbane is going to really test this bloke's confidence.

You do see the contraction in terms between your first sentences and the rest of your post... right?

You're already death-riding the bloke after he dropped a couple of balls in pretty harsh atmospheric conditions, and by the looks of your assessment ("project fullback", "absence of a solid fullback"), you have barely ever seen him play.

Post contractions are the most painful, but seeing they are less than 50 words apart I think we may have a little baby post any minute now... It's so exciting.

I've seen all of Kahu's 13 NRL games on the wing or in the centres. They've been solid. With some highlights here and there.

Certainly not proof he's going to be a great NRL fullback, or even the best fullback option in our squad.

What Porthoz is referring to is the fact that nearly all of Kahu's career prior to his NRL has been played at fullback.

I agree with you, I think Kahu is average and his absence due to injury has only increased the legend.

It's all well and good to suggest it's only a trial and/or he was the best since dally messenger in high school, but if he doesn't produce at the top level, then who the hell cares?

Like you, I hope he and byproduct Brisbane succeeds - but I'm not holding my breath about it.

So if Kahu fails but you managed to get your post in about doubting him before it happens does that make it better somehow?
