Rookie Corey Norman shines for Broncos
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/stor ... 89,00.html
SWEET-stepping teenager Corey Norman has emerged as a strong contender for the Broncos' fullback spot.

Norman upped the ante in the battle for Karmichael Hunt's vacant fullback spot with an eye-catching trial performance for Brisbane against Canberra at Ballymore.

Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak used the trial to experiment with his fullback options which included playing representative Israel Folau at custodian in the second half of the impressive 32-24 win.

Folau scored three tries, including one from fullback.

But Henjak would have had to have been impressed by the confidence and flair of 18 year-old Norman.

The rookie featured in two of Brisbane's early tries before scoring one himself in the second half when playing at five-eighth.

Norman served up a neat pass in the lead up to Folau's opening try in the third minute before displaying some dazzling footwork as he beat three Canberra defenders before producing a flick pass for the first of utility Ben Te'o's two tries.

Norman, Brisbane's back of the year in the Under 20 side last season, is pushing for the No.1 jumper along with Josh Hoffman, currently sidelined with an ankle injury, utility back Denan Kemp and another youngster Gerard Beale, who are all still in the mix.

After finding themselves 4-0 down early in the trial, the Raiders big men, led by Dane Tilse and Scott Logan began to get over the top of Brisbane.

Joel Monaghan scored in the right corner in the ninth minute before Terry Campese put the Green Machine in the lead 12-4 two minutes later by breaking San Thaiday's tackle close to the line.

Te'o's brace of tries in the 24th and 32nd minute however gave Brisbane a 16-12 lead at half time.

Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese revived memories of his famous uncle, Wallaby great David Campese, with two tries and four goals for 16 points to keep the visitors in the contest.

Brisbane's best were hooker Andrew McCullough who got through a ton of defence, Corey Parker, Folau, young Norman and Sam Thaiday.

For Canberra, Alan Tongue got through his usual heavy workload, while Campese was creative at times and Dane Tilse strong up the middle.

How did Folau go at fullback?

Pretty good actually.

Michaels was... meh. He got sent off, that was pretty good.

From the sounds of it though I would say Norman would be looking well placed for the fullback spot come round 1 especially if Hoffman isnt available.

Just got back from the game. Here is my summary (for numbers 14-17 I am not sure if I got the numbers on the jerseys right but knew who I was watching [icon_lol1. )

1. Corey Norman - very impressive. As said by Matt earlier, his footwork and agility to set up Teo's first try was outstanding. Looks to have a heap of ability.
2. Denan Kemp - played wing for the whole game, and Ivan switched his fullback around a few times so that's a sign that Kemp is here as a winger. He had a good game, shut down some Raiders backline movements in defence, and one run in particular was fantastic - he leaped high to defuse a bomb and before you know it he was 20 metres downfield. Good to see him back.
3. Israel Folau - My MOTM, 3 tries and they weren't just fall over the line tries. His third try was awesome, got the ball on the right hand sideline 25 metres out and beat 3 defenders to crash over. Also played fullback at the start of the second half and did it very well!
4. Alex Glenn - defended well and made some nice runs. Didn't play second half.
5. Steve Michaels - a nice bat back for Norman's try but other than that, pretty hopeless.
6. Ben Hunt - along with Smith controlled the game nicely. Good kicking game.
7. Tim Smith - worried about his ankle injury, but before that he played well combining with Hunt. His chip kick for Teo's first try was pin point.
8. Scott Anderson - started strong, didn't get too much game time. He'll be a good signing.
9. Andrew McCullough - didn't miss a tackle. And in the second half made some very nice runs. Very encouraging.
10. Ashton Sims - like Anderson, strong at the start but not too much game time after that. I'll happily see him start in the front row.
11. Lagi Setu - threw some nice offloads including one great offload to set up Izzy's second try. Best of the forwards.
12. Sam Thaiday - tried hard, but disappointing. Threw some stupid passes. Forget he went around though.
13. Corey Parker - worked very hard and goal kicking was good too.

14. Josh McGuire - little bit disappointing, will need to step it up a it. Not worried though.
15. Gerard Beale - Didn't get too involved, not much game time either. Defended OK though.
16. Matt Gillett - Played in the centres when he got on, didn't do a lot.
17. Ben Teo - scored 2 tries, which I love to see from a back rower. Tackled hard too.

Overall some encouraging signs and minus a few of our key players. The game was dominated by penalties so it was hard for the forwards to really dominate the game. Looking forward to round 1 now icon_smile

What did he do?

Professional foul, there were like 3 or 4 penalties against us in quick succession and Michaels stopped a backline movement and stripped the ball. Ref called professional foul.

i may be reading too much into it, but the new shorts with a white stripe down the side may give an indication of the upcoming new away strip... heres a quick mockup...

I hope not. The white's tolerable but it's not really necessary to have a predominantly blue jersey. Replace that blue with yellow and that would be a goer.

Nah, it won't be blue as it's a dark colour and we won't have two dark jerseys.

Despite the pants, it should be white with the blue highlights.

Can't see yellow getting in there either.

Pretty sure that was the new jersey.

It was different to the white one scotty was wearing, and it was missing that stupid little v under the throat.
