Gotta love this quote from the Murdoch press:

"As revealed by News Corporation on Sunday, Bennett had informed club directors he was ready to return to rebuild the Broncos empire he created."

Welcome back to the new Emperor. I think I'll re-read Julius Caesar.

And this:

"Given the Broncos are still in the hunt for a top four finish this season, is change really needed? And if it is, is a return to the past the best way to take the club forward? Perhaps the answer to that can be found at the Knights and the Dragons where both clubs have been left in an ordinary state by Bennett’s sudden departures. Even if Bennett manages to find improvement in the Broncos will it be short term gain for long term pain? One thing’s for sure, a Bennett-coached club is no longer the panacea it once was."

BREAKING NEWS: Broncos are set to bring back a number of the players that left during the dark years of Bennett's absence.

Darius Boyd
Karmichael Hunt
Corey Norman
Gerard Beale

And yes, they can all play fullback...The Broncos will be the first team in history to win a premiership with a team of fullbacks.

Quality first post back tbh.

It's going to be interesting to see just how much credit fans are willing to give Bennett next season.

I reckon Bennett in a lot of ways has really put himself in a pretty risky situation. If the Broncos don't win a premiership, you can rest assured the knives will be out and if he doesn't make the finals, dear god I'd hate to be modding this forum (oh wait...).

I think most fans knew that 2015 was going to be the Broncos year once Milford signaled his intentions of playing for the Raiders this season and while I still think there is plenty of work to be done before the Broncos can really count themselves as competition favourites they'll be in a much better spot (touch wood) than they are now.

Sort of like 2011 really.

Hell, I still give credit to Ivan on occasion. He blooded a lot of players from memory.

@chrisgarry1: Darius Boyd little chance of coming to Broncos. Likely to end up at Canberra Raiders.

I'm happy Bennett is coming back but can't help but wonder how long it will take for the first "Sack Bennett" forum lol

Ivan took a big risk.

Some would argue that he didn't have to and we could have easily been in contention for 2009-2010 if he didn't put so much faith in the NYC/depth but it was always going to be one of those moves that wouldn't pay off until 2011.

Never got a chance to see it through.

In fairness, he didn't get a long with the side all that well and things got very turbulent at times. At least with Hook, the Broncos never had streaks of games where they were getting 40 put on them every other week. That was hard to cop as a fan.

Talk of Bennett leaving Dragons and Knights in tatters is true to an extent. I think Wayne has setup a lot of good things off field and development wise at the Knights but the team itself is not in great shape. That is due to a variety of reasons. He recruited a few to many older types and there just hasn't been much on the market for him to sign. As for the Dragons I think his whole plan when he was at the Dragons was to win a Premiership at all costs. At Brisbane the plan is different IMO. He still wants/needs the Premiership but he also wants to leave the club in good shape. We still have a pretty young side with decent young players coming through as well. I can't see Bennett recruiting a lot of his usually suspects as we just don't need them.

Bennett always said he'd finish up here.

I reckon he plans on nesting and will be apart of the club in some capacity even when he moves on from the head coaching role.

When he left the Broncos the first time, he didn't get a chance to groom a next generation. He planned on doing it, but Bruno forced the issue.

I'm sure somebody will get started with a Sack Bennett thread soon enough, I'm more or less waiting for the Post Match Press Conference review thread.

Newcastle finished 8th in 2011 under their old coach.

They finished 12th in 2012 under bennett. they scraped into the finals last year by getting very very very lucky, winning only 50% of their matches. They are currently sitting 14th, equal second last.

Is that any better than us coming 12th once?

I also find the way Bennett went about this as just utterly disgraceful. Going straight to Murdoch and getting them to fire Griffin just days after saying he wouldn't coach a team that has a coach under contract is just despicable.

How many times are you going to repeat that lie ? Newcastle won more than 50% as I have repeatedly picked you up on it! you are wrong and know so. As I asked Kaz, how do know whether or not Murdoch didn't say ' Wayne, you have until Saturday to make a decision ' or ' I'm planning on flicking Griffin and would you be interested and if so, call us as there will definitely be a vacancy in 2015' Just how the **** do you know what went on behind the scenes ? Your hatred makes you blind to all the possible explanations.

@brentread_7: Getting mixed signals on Darius Boyd. Hearing he could join Bennett in Brisbane - would allow Hoffman to leave, possibly for Canterbury.

What the?

Interesting times ahead for the Brisbane. Can lightning strike twice? If anyone can do it, it's Bennett...

Personally, I thought today was a real shambles. If we're going to pay 4 million dollars for a coach why not have a tender process? It may have attracted applicants all over the world? May have even been tempting for coaches like Bellamy and Hasler to have a nibble? Have seen some coaches break contracts before when the opportunity was right.

Oh well...

No, they won 12 out of 24. By my calculations that is a 50% win rate, but please, do the math yourself and let me know what you get.

lets face it, this whole saga has proven that Bennett only cares about money and an easy win. Newcastle now more than ever needed someone to help guide them through the storm, and he packs his shit and leaves like 2 weeks after the big dollar contract isn't going to be renewed (and refused $800k a year to stay, since you know, that's chump change). He had the perfect opportunity to show people how good he can be, and pretty much almost immediately he just said "too hard and not enough money so I'm leaving". Like the dragons and the broncos before them he is now leaving a team worse off through poor/no recruiting, and no looking towards the future, although Newcastle are now going to be easily the worst off. No owner, no coach, an old roster with virtually no incoming recruits, losing a few Bennett follower players, coming off probably their worst season in a decade at least. Instead of rebuild them he followed the money and hopes of an easier job with a team on the rise. Less work, more money, more rewards and less blame.

But you go ahead and keep defending him and just say I hate him so nothing I say has any merit. I have disliked him for 10 years, but never have I lost all respect for him. After the last 2 weeks I have, and nothing he ever does can get it back. I dare say a few other people will be feeling the same.

Love this news. I feel for Hook, but this is a professional sport. You get the best when they're available.

"Broncos coach Wayne Bennett"... just sounds right.

I do have a feeling we'll see some folks drop off our roster in the offseason though.
