I wasn't aware they were desperate to keep him and the fact he was there for just one season and allowed to be shopped around combined with only being given a year long contract initially seemed to indicate that Souths didn't have any great faith that he would be worth keeping. I don't see that as making up rubbish and it was a genuine question fairly asked. Had they really felt desperate to keep him I think they would have offered him a juicy and longer contract and would have done so before the possibility of coaching Brisbane in 2020. Perhaps they did and he foresaw the future. I wasn't wrong or stirring the pot, I asked a reasonable question. It remains unanswered.

Souths give Seibold breathing space to decide future
South Sydney will not pressure coach Anthony Seibold to sign a contract extension as Brisbane ramp up their plans to prise him away from Redfern.
Rookie NRL coach Seibold is seen as the Broncos' No.1 target to replace Wayne Bennett in 2020.
A frustrated Bennett said this week he was unsure about his own future, telling reporters "you will have to talk to the chairman or the CEO . . . if they don’t want to talk about it, I’m certainly not going to talk about it."
Seibold is firming as the NRL coach of the year after breathing life into Souths' attack and reinvigorating the Burgess twins, Tom and George.
Souths officials are not concerned by the Broncos' interest and are prepared to sit back and give Seibold all the time he needs.
Seibold has opted to delay his own contract situation until the end of the season because he does not want it to distract from the club's title tilt.
Souths have made it clear they want Seibold to remain at the helm beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of next season.
Fairfax Media understands there has been no direct contact between Seibold and the Broncos to date.
Seibold once played lower grades with the Broncos, who are assembling one of the best young packs in the game, and he is also familiar with several of their senior players through his time as an assistant coach with the Queensland State of Origin team.
It was only late last year some were questioning why Souths general manager Shane Richardson had axed premiership coach Michael Maguire and opted for a first timer in Seibold.
Seibold is young and enthusiastic and his success cannot be denied but he also inherited a brilliant line-up, which includes two of the best players in the game, Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess.
Star Souths recruit Dane Gagai said he wouldn't be surprised if rivals other than the Broncos lined up for Seibold's signature.
"He understands his players and he gets it," Gagai said.
"I think with the style of play, bringing Cody [Walker] into the game and letting him play the off-the-cuff style of footy, which is one of his strong suits, he just gets it.
"I wouldn't be surprised if more clubs aren't interested in him.
"But our focus is on this year and building for the finals.''
The Maroons Origin star never doubted Seibold being a success as a head coach, even after he had signed on when Maguire was in charge. "He'd been an assistant for a long time and at the highest level with [Queensland] Origin, so it was never a concern Seibs being head coach."
Cody Walker rejected interest from Brisbane to remain at Redfern and would love Seibold to follow suit.
"He's done a fantastic job here and I can understand where that speculation comes from," Walker said on Thursday.
"But speaking on behalf of Seibsy, I think he'd be keen to quash [that talk] quickly.
"There's been no chat about [the Broncos] and there probably won't be any chat.
"I made the decision to stay here, it's my home, it's where me and my family are most comfortable.
"My kids love the Bunnies and I don't think they could see me playing for another team."
Bennett's record with the Broncos since his return to the club cannot be disputed but it's been reported that he may need a premiership to continue beyond next season.
The super coach has happily endorsed his assistant Jason Demetriou to succeed him and did so again on the eve of Thursday night's match against Cronulla.
"He is definitely qualified to do a head coaching job; if not here then somewhere else," Bennett said.
Souths were keen to lure Broncos forward Jaydn Su'A as a replacement for Sydney Roosters' $1 million-a-season scalp Angus Crichton but Brisbane dug deep to retain him, a week after they splashed $3 million to secure teen giant Payne Haas on a six-year deal.

Thanks for that. So Souths had Siebold contracted until the end of 2019 but were apparently happy to let him walk a season early and as they say weren't motivated to ensure he remained. It does appear they were happy with him and it at least answers my question. As I've said, I'm happy we have him and wish him great success but were I in Souths position at that time, I would have secured his services with a contract too good to refuse if I in fact rated him that highly. It seems to me that Souths unconcerned whether he stayed or went as they likely had a back up plan. The public certainly isn't privy to the backroom deals and this indicates to me at least that Souths knew with some certainty that WB was going to be available much sooner than a lot thought.

Yep. All the leaks coming out from Souffs, all the media reports in New Ltd and Fairfax and the absence of denials from any of the parties involved tell us nothing! You are right. WB is the messiah, Seibold is a Souffs reject and the entire Broncos board, CEO and others should be dragged out of the joint and shot in the car park for the heinous crime of deciding a young Souffs reject was a better choice for head coach going forward.
