Wayne Bennett related player movement discussion

Re: Darius Boyd return?

For ****s sake.

Whether this happens or not, I like the announcement. Boyd is a fine player (albeit not without issues) and his coming will force someone out.

Boyd can play wing, centre, fullback or perhaps 5/8. Gives us plenty of options in the back line, which we've been sorely lacking in for various reasons (Hodges injured, Barba / Hoffman derping it up etc).

Plus, it should put a rocket up some of the current roster who are clearly far too comfortable to perform for this team. I'm hoping they start playing like their NRL career depends on it (because it may) and maybe we can salvage something from this year.

One can only hope they announce Merrin or some other top back rower signing and put a rocket up that mob too...

For mine, Hoffman, Reed, Glenn, Thaiday and Gillett should be starting to get nervous about their prospects in Brisbane, the way they've been playing.

I don't think that's a bad thing at all, given how we're travelling.

Re: Darius Boyd return?

@Jason Simmons, it will be a very bad thing if Bennett plans on playing him at 5/8, we just finished playing one winger there, now the speculation is that Bennett plans to play another winger there.

If it does happen (Boyd to 5/8), it will re-enforce what i've (and some other people on the anti-Bennett train) have been saying, the poor selections everyone hates Griffin making, will continue under Bennett.

all so Boyd can stay attached to Bennetts teet

Mason was on NRL 360 tonight. Mentioned he is in talks with several clubs, but one with a strong coach that knows him and knows what he will get from him is his highest priority in signing for next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if he came to us next year.

We have a fullback and a 5/8. Both of them better than Boyd.

Boyd could play centre, but he kind of sucked at it when he played as a centre.

I would love it if he played on the wing, but he doesn't want to play as a winger.

The only positive I see is that we either get rid of Hoffman, or Hoffman gets forced to the wing. Apart from that, there are no positives.

We don't need Boyd.

**** Mason off, **** Boyd off and basically **** every other Knights nuffie off too ...

the only people he should even consider bringing from Newcastle are some of their highly rated youngsters

Don't agree I'm afraid. Wayne isn't coming here to develop our youngsters. We've been doing that for 5 years now. How's it working out? I think he's looking at a 2 year premiership window, with a top four or close finish next year. Signing yet more youngsters won't bring that.

I think we'll see at least Boyd and probably Mason. Barba and Milford are both contracted and won't be going anywhere I don't think, particularly Barba.

How did it work out for him signing all those has beens at the Knights ... if we have to live with him coming back, at least the guy could safe guard our future and not sign a bunch of old, over-rated, has-been hacks

The difference will be that Bennett won't settle for a mediocre Five-Eighth (He's shown that at the Knights, experimenting with a whole bunch of different combinations whilst Mullen was injured), even if Darius somehow miraculously wins the 6 jersey in the off-season, if he doesn't play well in it, he'll be on the wing faster than he can say "But.. Daddy.."

Whilst I agree he certainly made some poor signings at the Knights, he had the right idea. You need veterans and safe players to win premierships, I can see him bringing his fair share of those sort of players over the next 3 seasons, I'm just hoping he's learned his lesson at the Knights and won't bring players that are a little bit TOO experienced & TOO safe.

But as it's been said in many posts, I can't see us being in a better position (Young, up and coming players in the top 17) when Wayne leaves as opposed to when Wayne gets here, the only way it will be determined as a failure or a success is whether win a premiership(s) in that 3 year period.

Re: Darius Boyd return?

you guys can tell yourselves that as much as you like ... but the fact is Bennett has shown at different times that he does settle for mediocrity ... especially when i comes to Boyd.

IMO, he shouldn't even be considered at 5/8. every time that i read about it being a possibility:

Not..really..

Excluding the first half of this season, Boyd has been playing pretty much consistently well his entire career.. excluding the odd dip in form which every first grade player has.

And the reason he wasn't dropped this season is because of the circumstances (Boyd not being paid, Knights not having another reliable Fullback on the roster)

it will take longer than just the 3 years ... we may lose several of our talented younger players, because Bennett decides to bring has-beens to our club (the same thing many people criticized Griffin for with Prince) and these guys aren't getting much of a chance.

Re: Darius Boyd return?

I'd rather he not come back here to be honest.

Either Barba or Milford should get the spot IMO.

Hoffman said in that article that he's happy to play on the wing if Wayne wants him to ..... so that pretty much sorts out the backline.

Re: Darius Boyd return?

Yeah all those quotes in that article about Boyd coming back seems to seal it...

On the money

A bunch of old over-rated hacks?

There are only two players that have been mentioned. Mason has been doing his job consistently. Yes he is just a bench player these days, but he comes on and performs his role perfectly. If we could say that about our current bench mason wouldn't even be mentioned.

Boyd, look obviously you hate Boyd, I don't know if he screwed your missus or ran over your dog or something, but to say he is old and a has-been is ridiculous

Re: Darius Boyd return?

Even if he was coming, Boyd would never say anything to the media.

I don't want Boyd at the club.

It wouldn't be the worst signing in the world and his versatility would come in handy but just worry about his price tag and would rather spend that money elsewhere.

Sort of feel like he'd be like an Anthony Mundine type purchase. Handy but not valuable.

Boyd's stint at the Knights has been mixed at best. By his standards 2012 and 13 were massive disappointments as well with only the odd good game here or there.

Let him move to the Gold Coast...or sign him as the media manager for shits and giggles.
