IMO, there is certainly something to be said for finishing 5th and playing home against 8th, rather than finishing 4th and playing away against 1st
Yes, I know 4th gets a second chance if they lose, but they are also far more likely to lose and need the second chance than 5th is
Unlike the old top 8 system, this one seems to offer less advantage to 4th
Because if you finish top 4, win or lose you get to play your next game at home.Agreed. Why would we want to play Melbourne in Melbourne in week 1 when we can play at Suncorp against whoever comes 8th
I don't think that's quite right. If Melbourne finish on top and you don't want to play them in Melbourne then you need to finish 5th. You play 8th at Suncorp in week one and then you play the loser of 1vs4 in the 2nd week. Assuming Melbourne win that game you play 4 away. You don't play Melbourne until the grand final.Because if you finish top 4, win or lose you get to play your next game at home.
Lose to Melbourne in Melbourne then play Titans at Suncorp. Or play Titans at Suncorp then Melbourne in Melbourne anyway, but now it's sudden death.
I know what I'd rather.
Yeah I was just picking 2 teams at random. Replace Melbourne with whoever else and Titans with whoever else. The point is, I'd rather play at home against a lower ranked side for the sudden death game in week 2 than week 1. And we still wouldn't have to play Melbourne in a knockout situation until the grand final, regardless of week 1 or 2 results.I don't think that's quite right. If Melbourne finish on top and you don't want to play them in Melbourne then you need to finish 5th. You play 8th at Suncorp in week one and then you play the loser of 1vs4 in the 2nd week. Assuming Melbourne win that game you play 4 away. You don't play Melbourne until the grand final.
In that scenario, we might well be playing the Cowboys in Townsville... I'd rather play them at Suncorp in a sudden death match.I don't think that's quite right.
