Round 3 - Broncos v Roosters - Post Match Discussion

I'd rather lose that game now, in Round 3, than in September. I thought the effort was tremendous. I think we relaxed a little too much when hunt scored his 2nd thinking we had it won. We should have been more alert to the short kick off. We're we really lost it was not completing our sets straight after our tries. The Kennedy & Parker drops were pounced on by the Roosters. They scored after each one.

Just to add to the comments:

* I'm not joking here, I reckon Hoffman's lack of passing is deliberate. Hear me out. He's an evasive fucker, it took 3 players to stop him every time but Hoff kept those legs & arms thrashing. The defence knows he is not a gifted ball-player, and from his kicks I think he's a lefty so it's not his strong passing side, so they just keep putting defenders on him expecting the play to die. What happens on their line? They commit defenders to him and he puts Hunt & Reed over with some really soft hands & precision placement. The opposition will catch on (assuming he keeps his spot) but they're always going to have to balance out how many defenders to counter his running game & how many to cover if he passes.

* Regardless of the number of penalties (which did indeed warrant send-offs), there were two clear-cut binning situations. One was the Mini tackle that's been pointed out. The other was the Barba counter-attack that he passed to Vidot who made it to half-way before Maloney got him and simply did not let go. Both were deliberate ploys and both were done to stifle clear breaks (with the defence shattered) and those acts of foul play get binned 99% of the time. Just not tonight. The refs were cowards.

* SKD's was a definite no try. Hoffman didn't try to grab the decoy runner, he put his arms out to shove them out of the way so he could cover the inside. The defender impeded him, Reed had his man covered on the outside expecting his inside defender to slide with him, but Hoffman arrived late directly because he was impeded.

* Hala needs to be doing those runs EVERY time he has the ball. Every game. Until he does I'll just remember that one glorious charge and shake my head at the wasted potential.

* I was right about Vidot, he's a monster. I was wrong about Hunt, he was the best of the 34 players tonight. Good on him for shutting me up, let's hope it's not temporary.

I don't mean this as an attack on Barba but aside from the Dogs game he's been pretty shit this year (by what he can do). Whilst we still have Hodges to come back, I reckon Barba hitting his straps will be just as big a boost. The fact that we'll get both later on this season will be massive. Not premiership worthy, but it should be fucking exciting to watch.

Still think he's not 100%. Doesn't seem to have complete confidence in his ankle? Wouldn't say he's been shit though.

Hopefully he continues to improve and we get a few of those trademark breaks into the backfield. With support!

Ok, not a a bad team effort.

The Negatives.....

Gilletts effort on Moa for the rooster first try. He deserves to be dropped for standing and watching Barba try to hold the guy up from scoring. Piss poor effort Gillett.

Hunt is still not directing the play. Only 1 from 4 plays did we look organised.

I only saw Hoffman pass the ball once (to Reed for a try). He cant pass and should be playing QLD cup.

Parker at Prop, firstly he is rested after 20 minutes and provides not second phase play whilst in the front row.

Hala looked good. He needs to be a battering ram to bend the line.

We were unorganised and as good as Hunt was, we need more direction.

Hoffman only passed the ball once which led to Reeds try. He can't pass and is not a 5/8ths or fullbacks arsehole.

We need Hodges at 5/8, Oates in the centres and Reed in QLD cup. Hoffman on the wing. He only passed the ball once. Pathetic

Overalll, good effort but disappointing. If Griffin had some balls, he would drop Gillett for piss poor commitment and relegate Hoffman to the wing whee he belongs,

Games like that make me wanna cry, kick the dirt, and then cry some more. Oh man, so many what ifs that could have tweaked the result.

PS. Thaiday is back baby. He's doing what he does best and it's making a huge difference in attack. NRL Stats has credited him with 8 one-on-one tackles too, that's just insane. 29 tackles total, and not one miss.

Ok, Hunt scored 2 tries but his organisational skill were nothing but amateur. He struggles to organise play. His kicking game is reliant on luck. He is not first grade quality. A half back is not supposed to score two tries. Their job is to direct play and set up the team. He is a massive fail as far as an organiser is concerned.

Most of us saw a realistic chance of being 0-3 for the start of the season. I didn't think we'd beat the Bulldogs even with all their injuries. We did. Even so, I didn't think we'd beat an almost full-strength Cowboys team. We did. It was crazy to think we'd even get close to the Roosters. But we did - we almost won. Our woeful attack scored 5 tries against the reigning premiers. Granted they're missing their million dollar mercenary, but we were without out two best genuine props, our intended 5/8, and our best strike weapon. I have nothing but pride.

i actually saw hunt organise and set up numerous tries or near tries. you can't blame a rookie playmaker for not having complete control of the game when he is the only playmaker (no other half has to do this but campese is closest).

awesome told you so moment with hunt. Why can hoffman not pass?!? barba hasn't been amazing because hoffman won't pass he doesn't get any ball. the offloads are back was it 3 or 4 from parker? i hope barba capitalises next week.

Tonight was so encouraging. i saw a team play perfectly to their strengths. passing between forwards. offloads etc. although next week i want barba recieving the ball one in from hoffman so that barba gets to decide to pass or not. oates in for reed? hannant for wallace? those are the changes i'd make. We could actually feature in the finals this year (not going to hope for the premiership till next year)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I am super proud of the effort. But in the context of the game itself, and HOW they beat us, man, it stings. Still, I stand by my prediction of us ending up 6 or 7 on the ladder this year. We have a long way to go in attack, and as you mention, we are currently missing our intended starting half and our best strike weapon. It's not all doom and gloom!

Because McCullough is calling the shots from dummy-half. It's obvious. I was embarassed a couple of times as they stumbled around not knowing what to do, don't get me wrong. And yes, Hunt should be the one to be definitive in that situation. But he's the first Bronco since Lockyer left that has come up with some really decent clutch plays. The structure will come with more time, but the vision he's shown these last 2 games are not something that you can coach.

Yeah I will agree with you there. We were the better team, and we weren't beaten with the bounce-of-the-ball, we were beaten by incompetent refs who won't make tough decisions. Because if they reffed to the rules the Roosters would be penalised every second ruck, and if there was any consistency there would have been two genuine send-offs for deliberate foul play, and more for repeat infringements.

Right on. I wish he would pass a little bit more, but it's that run first mentality that makes the rare pass so unexpected!

Hopefully he continues to play to his strengths but becomes better at choosing his moments. Long way to go for him yet, but he's exceeded my expectations thus far (Admittedly low).

I try to avoid bleating about referee decisions, but Shayne Hayne has deadset got to be the worst referee going around. He is so incompetent to the point of bias that it is not funny.

I don't think we can blame it on the refs.

Sure, I think a send off was a genuine option on two occasions, they didn't lose us the game. We got a penalty count that was fairly indicative of the team's adherence to the rules of the game. Good teams will find a way to win irrespective of the referees, and the Roosters did that.

Does this make Reed the person who should be worried about Hodges return? His defense was our only negative tonight, oh and Hoffmans inability to pass most of the time. If those two things were different, we win that game 40-6.

I'm worried what happens when Kahu gets back, never mind Hodges!!!

Seriously, the 2013 Broncos would have got flogged in that game and lost the previous two.

They have exceeded my expectations, the Stooges sig may be on it's way out..

Agreed

Two starting props and our best back in Hodges who also happens to be our co-captain and even though we lost by 4 we missed 6 points from goal kicking. We did extremely well.

Exactly. Who else can kick btw?

Proud of the boys, but totally heart broken. Our attack is absolutely shithouse.

More worried about our line defence personally. Whenever they got in our 20 they looked very dangerous.

fucking devastated. I seriously thought we had that already won. **** looking at positives right now, i just want to break shit.

Way ahead of you. Poor logitech mouse....
Griffin used the whole bench!:whoo:

Was cheering. Had just finished saying to my brother that Oates wouldn't get a run when he was brought on.

I think we have more improvement in us than the Roosters.
Proud of our effort, I said early in the week if Hunt improved again this game I would be happy and he has done that.

Hala went straight up the tunnel with an arm or shoulder problem and I don't think he returned to the field

Agreed. Expectations exceeded so far. Hope Hala is ok

Agreed on all. How it's not obstruction when the first guy to get to the try scorer is impeded I have no idea....

Sterlings commentary shit me tonight FTR

Gilletts effort on Moa for the rooster first try. He deserves to be dropped for standing and watching Barba try to hold the guy up from scoring. Piss poor effort Gillett.

Yeah, let's disregard everything good he did because of that. I agree it was soft but fmd.

Gilletts attempt on Moa is inexcusable. He should be sent to Redcliffe to learn about commitment. That piss poor effort alone cost us a victory.

#Gillettisamuppet

Quality troll tbh
