Round 7 - Broncos vs Knights - Post Match Discussion

I know the knights defence was shit , but it was great to see some great traditional Bronco try's

Kenendy's best game as a bronco, still need more from him. Anyone else excited to see Barba get more involved , more ad lib. Andrew Mc Cullough is close to the premium hooker in the NRL .

I am hoping we see more of that from Barba.

Now that he has scored a try and had a great night under the high ball and in attack, his confidence should be better. A confident Barba is a deadly Barba.

Now we wait to see what Griffin does next week..

There was a real subtlety in bens game tonight. A step in the right direction.

I'd rate that as our best performance this year. Tough start, weathered heavy pressure, made the most of our limited opportunities in the early going. Worked our way back into the game, and didn't look back.

General opinions and ruminations :

- Barba: classy performance all round. Got the monkey of his back with a try, an assist, and several crucial tackles. Hope that ankle pulls up ok.

- Gillett: really seems to be hitting his stride. Great efforts in defence and attack. His judgement on when to make the big plays and when to just keep it simple has really improved.

- Macca: continues to impress. Tackles for days, and keeps us rolling forward. Support play superb. Like Gillett, the extra responsibility this year seems to have upped his game.

- Parker: quality performance all around. Was fantastic to see his offloads yield real dividends tonight. Goal kicking could still bite us in the ass in tight games though.

-Hodges: much better! Kept Leilua quiet all night, and didn't try to do it all himself. Good effort to lay on a try for Copley (who also showed good presence of mind to cut inside and pivot to plant the ball down. No way Maranta would have scored that).

- Hunt: Didn't get to pull off any really big plays, but put in a very composed performance. Some sub par kicking but steered the side around very well. Really shaping up nicely this year.

Also, despite Hoffman throwing a bum pass, loved the support runners when Hunt set Hoffy up on that break. We had Hunt, Barba and Reed all backing him up. Nice!

- Thought the refereeing was pretty dubious. Very soft penalties being tossed around early. Despite McGuire being a bit of a loose cannon, I remember seeing the count at 7:2 at one point. No way were we that bad.

- Lastly, it was great to see them make life hard for Gagai. Would have killed me to see him have a blinder against us, but they shut him down hard.

Very sweet win! Tough game next week though!

A quiet achiever tonight was Wallace. He had some quality runs, 2 real quality offloads in the same set and he is a good defender. Like him to play more games. good to have Oates playing as well he was solid

hope both of them keep their spots in the 17, those two are our future

I've seen a lot of people saying that Hunt was great tonight, I admit he was decent, but in reality I saw at least 4 kicks go dead (7 tackle restart from the 20 is a major momentum killer), he also did a poor pass which lead to a Barba mistake and had a couple of instances where he ran on the 5th when he should've passed or grubbered.

He also rarely finds the grass on clearing kicks, which would be very helpful.

his kicking game was poor but you can't really blame him when he is our only option 90% of the time and has more pressure than thurston in addition to still recovering from the bench hooker role. the pass i'll give you was poor.

the running was once and he actually got caught 10 metres from their line which is a much better option than 7 tackles from the 20 which is likely from the kick and you just criticised him for that in the previous sentence.

as for parker at lock. most people are applauding him for his offloads this game.
apart from the game against the cowboys he has had 2-5 offloads a game. this game he had 4 i believe. the difference was there was someone to make the most of them (macca)

Absolutely. Parker has been playing exactly the same, whether he wears the 10 or 13 on his back.

Agree with everything except the defending part. That second Knights try, he was in prime position to stop that big bloke and he came up with a soft swing at the legs.

Great victory! Fkn loved it, we set the platform with the great defense at the start. The boys really put in tonight and got the result they thoroughly deserved.

That was probably our first 80 minute performance in 2 years,

What I really liked is that we never put the cue in the rack and let the Knights back in the game. And we kept pushing to extend our lead.

Good scrambling derence tonight as well.

First rate performance.

Very good win. Defence was much improved imo. Great to see Barba break the shackles. Ben Hunt is really shaping as the player we needed. Some of those off loads from Parker were superb.

I'm gonna go through shortly and read this thread and the live game thread, but I need to put some thoughts down first.

Kennedy was a million times better starting, but was actually overshadowed by Hannant, who had his best game this year.

Hoffman needs to vacate the #6 immediately. He only passed the ball once in a backline movement and the ball went straight into the ground.

Barba had his first good game of the season. You could physically see his confidence grow as soon as he got that try and I'm really glad he got that off his back. I hope his ankle is okay. He might need a week of rest.

Hunt has to be the form Halfback of the NRL at the moment? Playing great and I can only imagine what he's going to do with more freedom when he gets a decent 5/8 to play with.

Parker should play Lock. Period.

Granville was great, but for some reason only got about 7 minutes.

Wallace was impressive. As soon as he got on he had some nice hitups and 2 or 3 good offloads - he looks like a Parker clone.

Oates was good too. He'll be better for the run, but did get sloppy on our line to let in the Knights only try.

I hate to say it, but we were better for having lost Thaiday. I'm not saying we're better without him, but I think Parker at Lock works a thousand times better. A bench of Granville, Oates, Kennedy, Glenn or Glenn, Wallace, Oates, Kennedy and have Hannant start. We need to look at this.

As for the game itself, I feel we really won the game in the first 20 minutes with our defence. The Knights were broken after that and really did play poorly. We played poorly in parts, but ultimately put them to the sword, which was quite satisfying.
