No doubt Boyd offers a higher chance the next two years. But what about the 5 after that? I am thinking long term. It's moot for us anyway as we will never find out.

We will about the Tigers though. I think they will win multiple premierships with that spine. Might not get the first one in the next two years though.

Would you rather get one in 2 years or 5 years (if either happens anyway...)? You can't always build for the future, what if Taylor has a career ending injury like another great player we had not long ago? No will ever care that we tried for a long term plan, only success matters in a cut throat business.

Fullback is arguably the easiest position to fill when Boyd does retire, if Milford goes on to become a great 5/8, we've got a halves pairing that has 7-10 years in them. It's not easy to pluck 5/8s and have them star.

I can't even remember all the promising halves who have turned to nothing.

Cornish?
Sam Williams?
Tim Smith?
Hampton?
Capewell?

Point is, very few do, so speaking about them as sure things isn't having a fair argument. Bellamy can experiment with 5/8s because he's got arguably the best spine in the business to lead them around, if we waste a year or two on what if 5/8s we cannot be competitive in the mean time, we saw that last year. Hunt can't do it on his own.

The point is you can't rely on maybes.
Boyd is a proven performer for years now and he's done it at every level of the game. Hunt and Milford while both exciting players, even Kahu I'll add to that list, have achieved absolutely nothing in the game. We'd struggle to win a finals game with a spine of 4 youngsters.

I'm also sick of this rubbish about Boyd being old, he's 27! He's in his absolute prime, and prior to this injury looked to be in the best shape of his career, and the happiest he's been in his career. I seriously can't wait for him to be back, I think we're going to see Boyd back to his best.

Boyd is not a 2 year stop gap, we haven't signed Slater who's 31. Boyd has at least 4-5 quality years in him. Hodges is 33 this year, Jamie Lyon is 33... In 4 or so years time if he becomes too slow for the role, he can always be pushed to Centre or Wing.

Go ahead, call me biased but Boyd is by FAR our best fullback option at the club this year and for the next few and I think Milford will go onto become an outstanding 5/8 anyway, so we've solved two huge problems we've had since Hunt and Lockyer left! And Boyd is on 400k, so we've got plenty of room to sign guys like Gagai.

This post is not aimed at you Ari besides the first part haha.

To answer your question - I want as many as possible! If I have to wait 5 years but then we get 3 in a row that's better than one next year and none after that.

Your point about Bellamy is actually why I favour Milford at fullback. Granted it fails a bit because Macca isn't Smith but the Storm won so many grand finals by having those 3 grow together and then stay together at their peak.

Obviously if Milford becomes a super five eight it will be okay but I still believe his ceiling is greatest at fullback.

It's refreshing to have someone who wants Milford at Fullback actually understand and acknowledge the other side of the argument without being obnoxious, thanks for that Ari Gold, other people on here could learn from you.

You really don't get it do you. . For someone who condescends, you really could take your own advise.

Bennett uses the media as a tool to manage his team and individual players. He makes players mentally tough on and off the field. When he says things to the media, he's saying it to the players! He really does know what he doing. . He's building a culture. Led emphasis on the short term, and building towards an envisioned goal of a premiership in a year or two from now.

Perhaps this is something most people on here's narrow minds cant comprehend since they all care about is week to week results?

And dude, good luck sending a spine like that you're implying straight into the NRL. LOLK
Did you even read the post you answered to?

The other thing to considered the Milford to fullback discussion is the defence. Kahu made two tackles in the last two games that some have described as match winners. would milford have made those tackles? that's 4 competition points.

A) Why wouldn't you take me seriously? I haven't heard Taylor's name mentioned once this season, I didn't even know he was playing NYC honestly, my point is that if you're claiming he's an option at Five-Eighth for our NRL team, shouldn't he be absolutely dominating everyone in U20's and making headlines?

B) You didn't answer my question, you listed a bunch of Halfbacks, Hookers and Fullbacks, I simply asked who you think is good enough to be playing Five-Eighth for us this year, if we were playing Milford at Fullback and didn't sign Boyd.

C) Barba sucks, the best thing Wayne has done since he got here was telling him he could sign elsewhere.
A) Taylor has been killing it in the U20's, I don't understand how you haven't heard or read this.

B) I didn't list a single hooker, unless you want to consider K Nikorima one. Albeit it may take a season to get them to gel, I would put Milford at Fullback, Hunt at 5/8 and Taylor at halfback, and give them time to build a combination. We would still have Kahu and both Nikorimas as back-ups for all the spine positions. Hence my reasoning that Boyd was not needed.

C) Barba has shown how good he can be in the past. Obviously 2014 and to a degree 2013 were years he had some serious issues. Bennett is one of the best coaches getting the best out of players and straighten them out. Why is it so far fetched to ask Wayne to give it a go?

The biggest issue in all of this, is a stark difference of opinion in Boyd's value. Some of you see him as a superstar, while I see him as a hinderance for better players coming through, and more importantly, I see him as the reason a few may leave... in particular Jayden Nikorima and Ashley Taylor, who I consider the best players I have ever seen coming through the Broncos ranks. (FTR, I didn't see Alfie or Locky before first grade, so I am only talking about those I have seen).

I don't subscribe to the notion it would take that long to get the above players ready to attack a premiership, and I have as much, if not more faith in young Taylor as I had in Kahu before the season started, and was copping people's sarcasm about it...

P.S. How am I being obnoxious, if not for the fact I am on the opposite side of this fence? Or is it because I am perceived to be in AP's camp?

P.P.S. @broncospwn, fair or not, I would prefer to take the chance with Ash Taylor/Jikorima, than the "sure thing" called Darius Boyd.

I will accept the first two as being better this year but Gidley is still making errors. Please pick him for the blues this year

Kurt Gidley will most likely never get a NSW jersey again...hopefully.

Totally agree.

Well, we'll never know, but with Boyd we sure will find out.

Is that really how you judge who is going well? Who gets a headline.

Most try assists in the comp by the way, and kicking really well.

We don't know for sure but we've got a pretty good idea.

Indeed we do. At the same time, the issue is more the cost we will pay eventually for signing a FB we never needed

A) Taylor has been killing it in the U20's, I don't understand how you haven't heard or read this.

Haven't seen it once, all I've seen on this forum in relation to U20's this year is how well Drew & Byrnes are playing, I don't follow the U20's greatly, as I assume most people don't, sorry for my lack of knowledge on the matter.

B) I didn't list a single hooker, unless you want to consider K Nikorima one. It's been said by most people that Hooker will be Jayden's position when he eventually makes first grade, and his brother is playing a reserve Hooker role for us at the moment, I'm not sure how you didn't list any..

I also like how you'd shift Ben Hunt, our best player last year, from his preferred position.. To make way for an NYC player

C) Barba has shown how good he can be in the past. Obviously 2014 and to a degree 2013 were years he had some serious issues. Bennett is one of the best coaches getting the best out of players and straighten them out. Why is it so far fetched to ask Wayne to give it a go?

We've been over this Porthoz, Barba had an insane season when every star aligned and he had a coach that gave him free reign and five 7ft tall props who all off-load, he'll never find a scenario like that again, hence why he'll never be good again (Not to mention he's lost a LOT of pace since his off-season ankle surgery with us, and I doubt he'll ever get it back)

The biggest issue in all of this, is a stark difference of opinion in Boyd's value. I don't understand your thought process honestly man.. so you're saying that because we signed a Fullback.. our NYC Halfback & Hooker/Centre are going to leave the club?.. I don't even

P.S. How am I being obnoxious, if not for the fact I am on the opposite side of this fence? Or is it because I am perceived to be in AP's camp?

Didn't think you'd make me spell it out, but that was purely directed at AP & Queenslander

We've been over most of this and even I'm getting a bit tired of it, but I will address this one:

We didn't just sign a fullback, we sign a very well established one that WB absolutely loves and one that many people believe WB will never move from fullback.

This 'locks in' Boyd as our fullback whilst he is here. Furthermore, WB has said he is going to give Milford all the time in the world at five-eight. Hunt is locked in as a half (he can play five eight and halfback). Prior to signing Boyd, if Taylor proved himself, there was always the potential for Milford to be shifted to fullback. That is obviously not going to happen now.

So if Ashley Taylor plays the house down and learns how to tackle, how does he break into the side? Unless we get an injury or one of Hunt and Milford super suck (options that I do not at all want) then Taylor has no way of breaking into the side.

That, BTW, is my key issue with most of this. It's not so much that Taylor deserves to be locked into our first grade side. My issue is that, IMO, he has been locked out of it. It's almost like however well he goes from here, nothing is going to allow him to be our halfback. And he can only play in the halves, he's not like Jayden who can play a variety of positions.

This is so so spot on

WB sacked the greatest player to pull on boots , anyone suggesting he won't make the hard selection decisions if he thinks the team can improve is wrong

So from what I gather, you're complaining about our 6 & 7 being so good that our U20 halves won't be able to crack the first grade side, and it's Boyd's fault because he plays Fullback, and you want Milford to play Fullback, but only if Ashley Taylor learns to tackle.

So we signed a fullback because we didn't have one, right ? We had some options but they were young and inexperienced but we definitely needed someone to do the job. So we buy a premium class fullback for reasonable cash ( like any other club except we may have gotten him a bit cheaper ) and solve that problem. We're not behind financially though because we unload a highly paid forward, another highly paid forward and an under performing overpaid half/ fullback. So now we have cash to buy a 5/8 at a very good price and have a very exciting 7 and 6 combination as a result.

So if we look at the picture we a half,5/8,hooker and fullback all with years of improvement in them. Somehow this isn't enough for you. You're sad because someone coming through the ranks may not get an opportunity but I ask you, is this not how it is at every club and in every year ? If these younger players are good enough, they will get a job somewhere. It's something we all accept, you can't keep them all. According to your logic, signing Boyd was not the problem, signing Milford was. We needed a fullback, remember the sight of turnstile Hodges last year.
