Broncos sign Matt Lodge on one-year deal

If they can manage their roster and stay under the cap with their recruitments/ recruitment strategy (signing massive name players like Cronk and SBW, along with blokes like Teddy) then good for them. I'm just sick and tired of hearing about how blatantly over the cap we are when clubs like the Roosters, Cows, and Sharks go around spending big bickies at will with stacked rosters.
100% agree... total bullshit that a "journalist" would come out and basically claim we are rorting the cap, because a player signed with us on supposedly cheaper money. Absolutely no mention of him training with us for the last 1-2 years and seeing our facilities, coaching staff, etc. first hand. All because it's a bit suss. Also the ridiculous notion that if he were to get $1.5m he's basically paid off his debt in 1 contract... does he not have to pay for food, housing, his child, etc.

I have said previously that the opportunity offered by the broncos to lodge gives him a great opportunity to restart his career. Taking money out of the equation, he'll likely be in our 17 every week, in a high quality team, coaching staff, facilities and potential to go deep into the finals. If he stays on the straight and narrow it will be a great advertisement of him to potential teams.

Compare that to going to knights, where he doesn't know the facilities, coaching staff, culture (outside of being a young team who will be aiming for 4 straight wooden spoons), etc.

The real question will be whether we can retain him for 2019 onwards.

Not just that but it gives justification for the Broncos to give him a better offer once the season is over with and with Sam Thaiday retiring after 2018 I would say the Broncos would have some room there to work with.

Any possible creative way that the Bronx or a unrelated third-party could provide payments towards Lodge's debt while not being noticed by the auditors?

Who cares what Rothfield says, he's been proven time and time again to be a liar. Bennett won't even humour him by having a coffee with him. Lodge is ours now and that's that. Rothfield and the Sharks can wait another 50 years for their next premiership.

Of course. over on LU and the Greenhouse they can explain it, because of Super League and John Ribot and the Thoroughbreds, we literally have billions at our disposal to pay whomever we wish, outside the cap...

Hence why we buy whoever we want all the time...

ah. well it makes sense when you put it like that.

The easiest way would be for the Broncos’ legal team to reach out to the claimants overseas. Offer them a million dollars upfront and Matt will pay another $500k when he can, so long as the terms are confidential and it is “leaked” that an agreement has been made to reduce the debt to $500k only.

Lodge doesn't even have to pay his debt. It's out of their jurisdiction if he stays in Australia. They can't make him pay it.

‘Probably not’ is the best legal answer I can add to this, but it is far from certain that they can’t. There is no international treaty or Australian legislation that allows for the enforcement of American court judgements within Australia true, however there are precedents under common law that ‘could’ allow the plaintiffs in the case to pursue Lodge here for the damages awarded in the US.

Lodge didn’t submit voluntarily to the court’s authority (in fact he didn’t even appear or contest the issue) nor was the US court acting in ‘jurisdiction in the international sense’ (what they might do if a US citizen was suing another US citizen for an act that occurred outside the normal US legal jurisdiction) so it is ‘possible’ an Australian court may refuse to act on the request.

An Australian court may also consider the size of the damages unreasonable in the circumstances (no significant bodily injury or harm was caused afterall it was mostly fear based, from all available reports of the incident) and the plaintiff’s would have to institute further court proceedings against Lodge in Australia at considerable expense with no certain prospect of winning, having to argue the above points to have the original American order recognised and enforced locally.

Should such occur, Lodge with competent legal representation would undoubtedly argue the above points and may also have a natural justice argument open to him, given the extensive differences in sanctions imposed by US courts compared to the likely penalties imposed under Australian law, though his NRL salary and associated income, whatever that may be, may work against him there...

Shit I didn't realise how many lawyers we have on this forum

Rothfield is a sweaty prick. He is either diaphoretic due to alcohol withdrawals or from the filthy lies he spews from his mouth. The level of hatred toward the broncos on 360 is disgraceful. Lodge was treated worse then Packer. If he had signed elsewhere they would of given a redemption story.

And yet you were trying to claim you weren't a bogan?
I wasn't trying to claim anything, I said I never classed myself as one. But after further discussion I thought we came to a conclusion that I was and a fucking classy one at that? Nothing to be ashamed about mate.

So you drink your cheap wine from a bottle and bought a Berlina instead of a stocko?
